Endurance Running vs. Persistence Hunting: What’s the Difference?

Endurance running is a locomotor ability: sustaining a run for a long time or distance. Persistence hunting is a subsistence strategy: pursuing and tracking an animal until heat, fatigue or other stress makes it vulnerable. A persistence hunt may include running, walking, pauses and careful tracking, so the terms are related but not interchangeable. Someone can be an endurance runner without ever hunting, while a persistence hunter is defined by the pursuit strategy rather than by the distance covered.

The distinction in one glance

Question Endurance running Persistence hunting
What does the term name? A physical capacity or locomotor pattern. A method of pursuing and capturing prey.
What is the goal? Move continuously or repeatedly over an extended distance or time. Make a particular animal exhausted or otherwise vulnerable.
What movement is required? Running is the defining movement. Running may be combined with walking, tracking, waiting and changes of pace.
How is success judged? By running performance, such as duration, distance or pace. By whether the prey is located, exhausted and captured.
What evidence is relevant? Human-locomotion and physiological studies. Ethnographic and ethnohistorical accounts, ecological observations and models of heat exchange and pursuit.

The category difference matters because a long run is not automatically a hunt. A runner may follow a marked course, train on a treadmill or compete in a race with no prey, tracking or subsistence objective. Conversely, a persistence hunt is not necessarily an uninterrupted race. Its defining feature is the strategy of maintaining pressure and using tracking and environmental conditions to outlast an animal.

What endurance running means

Endurance running describes the ability to sustain a running gait for an extended period or distance. The phrase can refer to an individual’s capacity, a training goal, a race distance or the broader human-locomotion question of how people run efficiently over time. It does not specify why a person is running.

A locomotor description, not a livelihood

In endurance running, the object of analysis is the runner and the movement: pace, duration, distance, energy use, fatigue and the conditions under which running can be maintained. A recreational jog, an ultramarathon and a long training session all fit the locomotor meaning, even though none involves hunting.

Continuous running is not required in every real-world endurance effort

People often use “endurance running” for sustained efforts that include brief slowdowns or stops, but the core idea remains prolonged running rather than pursuit of a particular animal. Whether an activity counts as endurance running depends on how the term is being used in context; it is not defined by a hunting outcome.

What the term does not establish

  • It does not show that the runner is hunting.
  • It does not imply that the run occurs in heat or on a particular terrain.
  • It does not identify the runner’s diet, culture or subsistence system.
  • It does not prove that endurance running evolved for one specific purpose.

What persistence hunting means

Persistence hunting is a pursuit strategy in which hunters locate, follow and repeatedly pressure prey until the animal is exhausted or otherwise easier to approach and kill. Tracking is central: hunters must keep contact with a particular animal or reconstruct its route when it disappears from view. The tactic can exploit differences between human and animal responses to heat, effort, terrain and recovery.

Liebenberg’s foundational description

In a 2006 article in Current Anthropology, Louis Liebenberg wrote: “Persistence hunting takes place during the hottest time of the day and involves chasing an animal until it is run to exhaustion.” This is Liebenberg’s description of the tactic in that article, not a rule that every documented hunt occurs at the hottest time of day. Conditions, prey, terrain and local practice vary.

A hunt can alternate between gaits

Persistence hunting does not require a hunter to sprint continuously. A pursuit may alternate between running and walking, include periods of tracking an animal that has moved out of sight, and use pauses while the hunter reads spoor or other signs. The relevant question is whether these actions form a sustained strategy to outlast a specific prey animal, not whether every minute is spent running.

Heat and tracking are part of the strategy

The tactic is often discussed in relation to hot conditions because heat exchange can affect both hunter and prey. Sweating and the ability to continue moving while an animal must stop to recover are important considerations in the accounts summarized by Liebenberg. Tracking is equally important: without locating and following the same animal, a long run would be exercise rather than persistence hunting.

How a persistence hunt can unfold

Actual hunts differ by community, species and landscape. The sequence below describes the logic of the strategy, not a universal script.

  1. Select or encounter prey. Hunters identify a suitable animal and assess signs, direction and terrain.
  2. Establish a trail. If the animal leaves direct view, spoor and other signs help the hunters reconstruct its path.
  3. Apply repeated pressure. Hunters pursue at a pace they can sustain, using running, walking or both rather than exhausting themselves immediately.
  4. Exploit recovery differences. The animal may need to stop, seek shade or otherwise recover. Hunters use the opportunity to close the distance or resume tracking.
  5. Repeat until the animal is vulnerable. The hunt ends when the prey can no longer flee effectively or can be approached and captured.

This sequence explains why distance alone cannot identify a persistence hunt. A person could cover a greater distance in a race than in a hunt, yet only the hunt has a prey-specific tracking and exhaustion objective.

Can persistence hunting involve walking?

Yes. A 2022 heat-exchange model study explicitly compared running, intermittent running and walking as possible persistence-hunting strategies. Walking was treated as a modeled tactic, not dismissed as impossible. Under the study’s simulated conditions, however, it was less successful and took longer than running-based strategies.

Mode in the 2022 simulations Modeled result How to interpret it
Running or intermittent running Higher predicted success than walking under the modeled combinations of conditions. The model favored sustained or alternating running in those scenarios.
Walking Predicted success rate was 30–74% lower than for running or intermittent running. This range applies to the simulations, not to every real hunt.
Successful walking hunts Took twice as long and used 10–30% less energy, yet left the hunter more exhausted in the model. Lower modeled energy expenditure did not make the strategy easier overall.

The apparently conflicting walking results are important. A walking hunt could succeed in the model, but successful cases required more time and produced greater exhaustion for the hunter. The lower energy figure refers to energy used during the modeled hunt; it does not mean that walking was less tiring by the time the hunt ended.

What the 2022 study actually tested

Martin Hora, Herman Pontzer, Michal Struška, Pauline Entin and Vladimír Sládek reported the comparison in “Comparing walking and running in persistence hunting,” published in the Journal of Human Evolution 172 in November 2022 (article 103247). The work used a heat-exchange model rather than a count of observed hunts.

Validation samples versus hunt observations

The authors reported validation using 73 humans and 55 ungulates. Those numbers describe the data used to check the model’s heat-exchange behavior. They are not counts of hunts, hunter-gatherer communities or successful pursuits. The subsequent comparisons were simulations.

Variables in the simulations

The simulated outcomes depended on combinations of prey size and sweating capacity, hunter velocity, air temperature, humidity and start time. Changing those inputs changes the thermal balance and therefore the predicted chance and duration of a successful pursuit. The reported 30–74% difference is consequently conditional, not a general failure rate for walking hunts.

Why a model cannot settle every field question

A model can isolate variables that are difficult to measure together during a real hunt, but it simplifies behavior and ecology. It does not capture every choice a hunter makes, every change in weather, or every feature of a particular landscape and animal. Its numbers are useful for understanding mechanisms and trade-offs, not for declaring that all persistence hunts have one outcome.

Why heat, pace and prey behavior matter

Persistence hunting depends on the interaction between the hunter, the prey and the environment. A strategy that works for one ungulate in dry heat may not work for another species, in a different season or across rough terrain.

Thermal conditions

Air temperature and humidity affect how quickly heat can be shed. The 2022 simulations included both variables, along with the time of day, because a change in starting conditions changes the thermal challenge for the hunter and prey. Liebenberg’s 2006 discussion likewise highlights sweating and hot conditions as relevant to the tactic.

Relative pace

Running can shorten the time needed to keep pressure on an animal, but it also costs the hunter more energy. Intermittent running may trade speed for sustainability. Walking lowers modeled energy use in the successful cases but, in the 2022 simulations, lengthened the hunt and left the hunter more exhausted.

Prey characteristics and terrain

Prey size and sweating capacity were explicit model variables. In the field, terrain and tracking conditions also determine whether hunters can maintain contact. A trail that is easy to read can make alternating movement practical; a broken trail may force slower searching or end the pursuit.

What evidence says about human evolution

The idea that persistence hunting helped shape human endurance-running traits is an evolutionary hypothesis. It is plausible that a strategy requiring sustained movement, heat management and tracking could have favored some endurance-related abilities, but plausibility is not proof of a single cause.

The 2006 evolutionary proposal

Liebenberg’s 2006 article connected modern hunter-gatherer persistence hunting with broader questions about human evolution. Its proposals are influential, but they should be read as hypotheses about possible selection pressures rather than as a demonstration that persistence hunting alone produced every human endurance trait.

What the 2024 publications add

A 13 May 2024 Nature Human Behaviour research briefing titled “Ethnohistorical analysis suggests that endurance running evolved with persistence hunting” describes evidence supporting an association between the tactic and endurance running. A related 2024 article, “Ethnography and ethnohistory support the efficiency of hunting through endurance running in humans,” reports ethnographic and ethnohistorical support for hunting through endurance running in some contexts.

Those publications strengthen the case that endurance-based hunting is documented and ecologically plausible. They do not establish that every human population practiced persistence hunting, that it was the only driver of endurance adaptations, or that the tactic was present in the same form throughout human prehistory.

Common misconceptions, corrected

“Any very long run is persistence hunting.”

No. Persistence hunting requires a prey-focused pursuit strategy, including tracking and an intention to outlast a particular animal. A marathon, trail run or training session can be an endurance effort without being a hunt.

“Persistence hunting is always nonstop running.”

No. Running, intermittent running and walking have all been considered in descriptions or models of the tactic. The 2022 study specifically modeled walking, although it predicted lower success and longer duration under its assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Walking cannot work.”

The model did produce successful walking hunts, but they took twice as long, used 10–30% less energy and left the hunter more exhausted in those simulations. That is a conditional result, not a universal rule.

“Humans are universally the best endurance runners.”

The evidence summarized here does not justify a universal ranking of humans against all animals or in every environment. It addresses a particular locomotor capacity and a particular hunting strategy under specified conditions.

“Persistence hunting definitively caused human endurance.”

The evolutionary connection remains a hypothesis supported by anthropological, ethnographic and modeling evidence. Multiple pressures could have contributed to human endurance-related traits, and the available publications do not identify persistence hunting as the sole cause.

How to tell which term fits an example

Use the following diagnostic questions when a description is ambiguous:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is the subject a movement ability? If the focus is sustained running, pace, distance or fatigue without prey, “endurance running” is the appropriate term.
  • Is there a specific animal being followed? If hunters maintain contact with and pursue prey, the activity may be persistence hunting.
  • Does the activity include tracking? Tracking strongly distinguishes a hunt from a long run, especially when the animal is temporarily out of sight.
  • Is the objective to exhaust or outlast the prey? That outcome is central to persistence hunting.
  • Does the account mention running, walking and alternating bouts? Those details describe how the strategy is carried out; they do not by themselves determine whether the activity is a hunt.
Example Best description Reason
A person runs 20 kilometers on a marked course. Endurance running. There is sustained locomotion but no prey pursuit.
Hunters follow one animal’s spoor, run when they have visual contact and walk while reading the trail. Persistence hunting that uses endurance running. The hunting strategy includes tracking and mixed gaits.
A group chases several animals briefly and abandons each one without tracking. Not necessarily persistence hunting. Brief pursuit alone does not establish an exhaustion-based strategy.

How to read the numbers without overclaiming

Three qualifications should stay attached to the headline figures:

  • 73 humans and 55 ungulates are validation sample sizes for the 2022 heat-exchange model, not observed hunt totals.
  • 30–74% lower success for walking is a simulated range produced under specified prey, hunter and weather combinations.
  • Twice as long and 10–30% less energy describes successful modeled walking hunts; the same simulations reported greater hunter exhaustion.

Removing those qualifications would turn conditional outputs into claims about all hunters and all environments. Keeping them makes the comparison useful without implying a precision the study does not provide.

What is established—and what remains uncertain

Well-supported distinctions

  • Endurance running names a locomotor capacity; persistence hunting names a hunting method.
  • Persistence hunts can combine running, walking, tracking and changes of pace.
  • Ethnographic and ethnohistorical accounts document endurance-based hunting in some contexts.
  • Heat exchange, sweating, prey traits, pace and environmental conditions affect modeled outcomes.

Questions that remain open

  • How common persistence hunting was across human populations and periods.
  • Which ecological settings favored it over other hunting methods.
  • How much it contributed, relative to other factors, to the evolution of human endurance-related traits.
  • How closely any single model’s assumptions match a particular historical or contemporary hunt.

Bottom line for readers

Endurance running is about what the human body can do: maintain a running effort over time or distance. Persistence hunting is about what hunters are trying to accomplish: track and pressure a particular animal until it can no longer escape effectively. Running may be the main tool, but walking, pauses and tracking can be part of the same hunt. The 2022 model found that walking could succeed under some simulated conditions, while predicting lower success, longer duration and greater hunter exhaustion than running-based approaches. Evidence from anthropology and recent 2024 publications supports persistence hunting as a documented and plausible contributor to human endurance evolution, not as a universal practice or a proven single cause.
