Developed by Section 9 Interactive and published by Epic Games, End of Abyss is a sci-fi action-adventure with survival-horror elements. You play as Cel, a combat technician descending with her crew into a damaged underground facility. Scanning and opening routes
A scanner helps Cel investigate the facility, while unlockable tools and gear upgrades expand what she can do. The PlayStation description emphasizes branching paths and returning to earlier areas once new progression options make them accessible. That setup makes exploration more than a sequence of disconnected rooms: progress can mean learning where to go next as well as surviving a fight.
Top-down shooting with horror tension
Combat uses a top-down, twin-stick-shooter perspective, but the developer’s stated emphasis on a slower pace and atmosphere distinguishes the game from a shooter focused only on constant action. The survival-horror framing suggests that tension and vulnerability are part of the intended experience. The available review coverage does not establish a universal difficulty level or provide enough detail to quantify combat balance.

Exploration and atmosphere
Game Informer’s Charles Harte, reviewing the PS5 version on October 2, 2026, saw the blend of Metroid-like progression and survival horror as a distinctive strength. GamesRadar’s September 30, 2026 review praised the atmosphere and pacing when the game is working well. Together, these opinions point to a game whose appeal depends on the interplay between exploration, tension and mood—not simply its shooting.
Frustration and technical concerns
The same early coverage includes important reservations. Harte reported major bugs during his playthrough; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a measured bug rate or proof that every version or later patched build has the same problems. GamesRadar criticized frustrating sections and said problems became more prominent later in the game. It is most likely to interest players who want a connected, tool-gated exploration loop and are open to that structure being paired with horror atmosphere and top-down combat. Someone seeking a straightforward action shooter, or who has little patience for frustrating passages, may be less well served by the reported mix.
