The early reviews agree on its strongest draw—atmosphere—but GamingBolt also reports that slow pacing, backtracking, uneven difficulty, and awkward weapon handling undermine the experience. Its verdict: a qualified recommendation, not an easy pick for every player.
What is End of Abyss?
End of Abyss is developed by Section 9 Interactive and published by Epic Games Publishing. The game combines survival-horror tension with exploration and twin-stick-style combat. A scanner helps locate energy cores, identify logs, and scan enemies, making information gathering part of navigating unfamiliar spaces.

Section 9 co-founder Marcus Ottvall described the intended balance as “relatively simple combat” alongside a Metroidvania structure in which new weapons and equipment power up the character and open interconnected areas. That goal helps explain the game’s mix of accessible action and progression-driven exploration; whether the combat and traversal feel smooth in practice is a separate question.

What works: atmosphere and exploration
GamingBolt’s Ravi Sinha praises the oppressive opening, art direction, environmental design, and intriguing setup. GamesRadar likewise frames the experience around survival-horror hazards in unexplored spaces. Together, those assessments point to a game whose main appeal is the unease of moving through a hostile environment, rather than combat spectacle alone.

The scanner gives exploration a practical purpose: it can surface resources and information as well as scan threats. Unlockable equipment and weapons are meant to encourage revisiting interconnected areas. For players who enjoy gradually learning a hostile map and piecing together what happened there, that combination has a clear appeal.
What holds it back: pace, combat, and difficulty
GamingBolt says the game loses momentum because of tedious pacing and extensive backtracking. It also criticizes difficulty spikes and awkward weapon mechanics. Those issues matter together: a game that asks players to revisit areas and face dangerous encounters depends on traversal and combat remaining satisfying. If weapon handling feels clumsy or difficulty shifts sharply, the atmosphere can become frustration rather than tension.
The contrast between the developer’s stated aim of easy-to-pick-up combat and GamingBolt’s criticism of weapon handling is worth noting, but it does not establish that every player will have the same experience. GamesRadar provides a second critical perspective on the survival-horror structure and exploration; neither review should be mistaken for a standardized test or a universal player consensus.

Is End of Abyss worth playing?
Consider it if atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and exploration matter more to you than consistently brisk pacing or finely tuned combat. Be more cautious if you strongly dislike backtracking, sudden difficulty jumps, or weapons that may take time to feel comfortable. The most defensible expectation from the available reviews is a compelling mood wrapped around uneven play.
