ANC reduces noise you hear while listening; ENC reduces background noise picked up by the earbuds’ microphones so your caller can hear you more clearly. They operate on different signal paths, solve different problems, and can appear together in one pair of earbuds. Choose ANC for quieter music, podcasts, or travel. Choose ENC or clearly described call-noise suppression when your priority is voice quality on calls.

ANC and ENC solve different noise problems

The labels look similar, but they describe two separate jobs. Active noise cancellation (ANC) is designed for the earbud wearer. The earbuds monitor sound around you and generate an opposing signal, often called anti-noise, to reduce the sound that reaches your ears during playback.

Environmental noise cancellation (ENC), as earbud manufacturers commonly use the term, is designed for the microphone signal. It processes the sound captured around your mouth and voice so the person on a call hears less of the surrounding environment. ENC does not primarily make your own music or podcast quieter.

A pair can include both systems. Xiaomi’s documentation for the Redmi Buds 6, for example, lists ANC for listening and ENC call noise cancellation for microphone processing. That combination is useful because the wearer and the caller have different noise problems.

How ANC works when you are listening

Microphones monitor the environment

ANC earbuds use microphones to sample sound outside the earbud and, in many designs, sound inside the ear canal. Apple describes outward-facing microphones detecting external sound and the earbuds producing anti-noise to counter it. The processing happens continuously while the ANC mode is active.

The earbuds create an opposing waveform

The anti-noise is timed and shaped to reduce the effect of incoming sound at your ear. It does not remove the original sound from the room, and it cannot guarantee silence. The result depends on the microphones, signal processing, speaker drivers, ear-tip seal, and the particular noise reaching the earbuds.

ANC is strongest against steady, low-frequency sound

Sony says its noise-canceling effect primarily works on low-frequency sounds such as train, airplane, and engine noise. These sounds are relatively continuous, giving the system time to estimate and counter them. That makes ANC especially useful on flights, trains, buses, and near HVAC or engine rumble.

Higher-pitched or rapidly changing sounds are more difficult to reduce consistently. Voices, dishes, keyboard clicks, sudden knocks, and a nearby child may still be audible even when ANC is working normally. Do not interpret “noise cancellation” as a promise that every sound disappears.

Fit changes the result

A good seal prevents outside sound from leaking around the ear tip and gives the ANC system a more predictable acoustic environment. Apple says ANC and transparency modes work best when AirPods Pro fit well. Qualcomm also describes adaptive ANC systems that can adjust based on fit and noise leaking through the seal.

Fit is important, but it is not a universal performance ranking. Different earbuds, ear tips, microphones, and algorithms can behave differently even when they fit the same listener. A secure seal is a prerequisite for consistent results, not proof that one model will outperform another.

How ENC works during calls

ENC processes microphone input

ENC usually means environmental-noise suppression applied to the microphones used for calls. The earbuds attempt to distinguish your speech from competing sounds, then reduce some of the unwanted microphone signal before it is sent to the phone or meeting service.

Nothing’s support explanation of ENC presents it as a way to improve call clarity. Xiaomi similarly describes ENC as call-focused processing. Qualcomm’s cVc technology is another example of microphone-side processing that suppresses environmental sound and enhances speech capture.

ENC helps the other person, not necessarily you

When ENC is effective, the caller may hear less traffic, fan noise, or conversation around you. You can still hear the same environment through your own ears. Your listening experience changes only if the earbuds also provide ANC, passive isolation, a transparency mode, or another separate feature.

This distinction matters in a busy office or on a street. If the person on the other end says your voice is buried under background noise, look for ENC, microphone noise reduction, or clearly documented call-noise suppression. Buying earbuds with listening ANC alone does not establish that your outgoing microphone signal is cleaned up.

ENC is not a standardized performance grade

Manufacturers use ENC as a feature label, not as a universal measurement with a common test method. The word does not tell you how much noise a particular model removes, which frequencies it targets, how it behaves in wind, or how natural your voice sounds after processing.

Xiaomi cautions that noise-cancellation effectiveness requires acoustic validation. A specification sheet can confirm that a feature is included, but it cannot by itself establish comparable call quality across brands or models.

ANC vs ENC at a glance

Question ANC ENC or call-noise reduction
Who benefits? The person wearing the earbuds The person listening to your call
Which signal is processed? Sound reaching your ears during playback Sound captured by the call microphones
Main goal Reduce external noise while listening Make speech clearer on calls
Typical strengths Steady, low-frequency rumble from trains, aircraft, and engines Some surrounding sound competing with your voice
Does it make your own environment quieter? Usually, when enabled and properly fitted Not by itself
Does it clean up your outgoing call? Not necessarily That is its intended purpose
Is the label standardized? Implementation and results vary by model No universal performance level is established by the label
What affects results? Ear-tip seal, fit, microphones, algorithm, and noise type Microphone placement, voice position, wind, algorithm, and noise type

Which one should you choose?

Choose ANC when you want to hear less noise

Prioritize ANC if your main problem is environmental sound entering while you listen. It is the relevant feature for aircraft cabins, rail journeys, bus rides, commuting, and continuous mechanical hum. Check that the earbuds include adjustable ear tips or another design that can seal your ears comfortably.

ANC is also useful at home when a fan, air conditioner, or computer is producing a persistent low-frequency sound. You may be able to listen at a lower volume when the background rumble is reduced, although the appropriate listening level remains personal and hearing safety still matters.

Choose ENC or call suppression when callers cannot hear you

Prioritize ENC, microphone noise reduction, or a detailed call-noise-suppression description if your main complaint comes from other people on calls. This is the relevant feature for a shared office, a café, a street, or a home with appliances running nearby.

Do not treat the label as a guarantee. Microphone placement and wind can overwhelm processing, and aggressive suppression can make a voice sound clipped or artificial. Look for call-focused documentation and, when possible, test the earbuds with the phone and apps you actually use.

Choose both when you have both problems

If you commute while taking calls, both systems may be worthwhile. ANC addresses the noise you hear; ENC addresses the noise your caller hears. Confirm that the product description names both functions rather than assuming that one “noise cancellation” label covers listening and microphone processing.

What happens if earbuds advertise only one system?

ANC without documented ENC

You may get quieter playback, but the product description does not establish that your outgoing voice will be isolated from traffic, wind, or nearby conversation. Some earbuds still apply basic microphone processing without calling it ENC, so check the manufacturer’s call specifications instead of inferring performance from ANC.

ENC without ANC

Your callers may hear a cleaner voice while you continue to hear the surrounding room. This can be sufficient for occasional calls, but it will not provide the low-frequency listening benefit associated with ANC.

“Noise cancellation” without a direction

When a listing uses the phrase without saying whether it applies to playback or calls, treat the claim as ambiguous. Search the technical description for separate entries such as active noise cancellation, transparency, microphone noise reduction, environmental-noise cancellation, or call clarity.

How to evaluate an earbud’s claims

  1. Identify the target listener. Ask whether the feature is intended to reduce sound at your ears or at the other person’s call microphone.
  2. Find the exact mode names. Look for separate listings for ANC, transparency, ENC, call noise reduction, or microphone noise suppression.
  3. Check the fit design. For ANC, verify that the earbuds include ear tips or another sealing approach that you can wear comfortably. A loose fit can allow noise to leak in.
  4. Match the feature to your noise. Continuous low-frequency transport or engine noise is a more suitable ANC target than sudden voices or sharp impacts. Wind and unpredictable crowds are challenging for microphone processing.
  5. Look for model-specific evidence. Prefer an acoustic test, call sample, or clearly described test method over a bare acronym. A feature label alone does not provide a comparable performance number.
  6. Test with your real applications. Call a friend or leave a voice message from the places where you normally talk. Ask what they hear, not only what you hear in the earbuds.

A practical test for ANC

You can check whether ANC is helping without specialized equipment. Use a familiar track or podcast at a safe, moderate volume and sit near a steady source such as an air conditioner or vehicle engine.

  1. Wear the earbuds with the ear tips that provide the most secure, comfortable seal.
  2. Play your content at a fixed volume.
  3. Switch ANC off, or use the earbuds’ normal or transparency mode, and note the background sound.
  4. Switch ANC on without changing the volume.
  5. Compare the steady rumble, your content’s clarity, and any pressure or occlusion sensation.
  6. Repeat the comparison after reseating each earbud. A small seal change can alter the result.

This is a personal fit check, not a laboratory measurement. It cannot produce a reliable percentage of noise reduction or rank different products.

A practical test for ENC and call quality

Call processing must be judged by the person at the other end. A recording made only from your own perspective cannot show what the call recipient hears.

  1. Use the phone and calling app you normally use.
  2. Stand in a representative environment, such as near office conversation, a fan, or light outdoor traffic.
  3. Record a short message or call a trusted contact with the earbuds connected.
  4. Repeat the same sentence with the earbuds’ call-noise-reduction setting enabled and disabled, if the product provides that control.
  5. Ask the listener to compare speech intelligibility, background volume, wind bursts, and any robotic or clipped qualities.
  6. Repeat the test while turning your head and while speaking at a normal distance from the microphones.

Results can vary with the phone, app, Bluetooth connection, microphone position, and surrounding noise. A good result in a quiet room does not predict performance on a windy street.

Common misconceptions

“ANC makes calls clearer for everyone”

Listening ANC reduces sound reaching the wearer. It does not automatically clean the signal sent to a caller. Only separately documented microphone processing establishes that function.

“ENC makes my music environment quiet”

ENC is generally applied to microphones during calls. It is not a substitute for ANC or passive ear sealing when you want less sound reaching your own ears.

“More microphones guarantee better cancellation”

Microphone count alone does not establish performance. Placement, wind handling, software, speaker output, fit, and the acoustic environment all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Cancellation means silence”

Neither system removes every sound. ANC primarily targets certain low-frequency, relatively steady sounds, while ENC attempts to separate speech from environmental sound. Both are signal-processing systems with limits.

“The acronym is a universal specification”

ENC is used inconsistently across product pages. Even ANC implementations differ in how they handle fit, frequency range, adaptive behavior, and transparency modes. Compare the documented function and evidence, not the acronym alone.

Fit, comfort, and transparency modes

ANC depends on the acoustic relationship between the earbud and your ear. Try different supplied ear-tip sizes and check whether each earbud remains sealed when you walk or speak. An uncomfortable tip that you remove frequently is less useful than a comfortable one that stays in place.

Transparency or ambient modes intentionally pass outside sound through the earbuds. They are not the same as ANC and should not be used as evidence that a product has strong cancellation. Apple’s guidance treats ANC and transparency as modes whose effectiveness depends on a good fit.

Some adaptive ANC systems alter their processing as the fit or surrounding noise changes. Qualcomm describes adaptive ANC as responding to fit and noise leaking through the seal. That can improve consistency, but it does not eliminate the need to position the earbuds correctly.

Using ANC and ENC together

On a pair that supports both, ANC can reduce the rumble you hear while ENC works on the microphone feed during a call. The two functions may use overlapping microphones and processing hardware, but they still have different outputs: one affects playback at your ears and the other affects the outgoing voice signal.

Check the controls carefully. A product may place ANC in a listening-mode menu while call-noise reduction is automatic, app-controlled, or active only during calls. If you cannot find an ENC setting, that does not prove that no microphone processing exists; read the model’s call documentation for the exact behavior.

What specifications cannot tell you

  • They cannot tell you how well ANC will work with your ear shape and chosen ear tips.
  • They cannot establish a universal percentage of noise removed.
  • They cannot show whether ENC preserves a natural voice in wind or competing speech.
  • They cannot prove that two products using the same acronym perform similarly.
  • They cannot replace a controlled listening and call test in the environment you care about.

Official explanations from Apple, Sony, Qualcomm, Nothing, and Xiaomi clarify the intended signal path and typical use cases. They do not provide a controlled, independent ANC-versus-ENC ranking across earbud models. Treat manufacturer claims as descriptions of features, not as interchangeable test scores.

Decision guide

Your main problem Feature to prioritize What to verify
Aircraft, train, bus, or engine rumble while listening ANC Comfortable seal, listening-mode controls, and evidence for low-frequency noise reduction
Callers hear your fan, office, or street noise ENC or microphone call-noise suppression Call examples or testing that evaluates the recipient’s experience
You need quieter listening and clearer calls Both ANC and ENC Separate documentation for playback and microphone processing
You mostly hear voices and sudden sounds ANC plus realistic expectations Passive seal and a trial in the actual environment; ANC is not designed to erase every voice
You are unsure what “noise cancellation” means in a listing Neither until clarified Whether the claim applies to listening, calls, or both

Bottom line for buying earbuds

ANC and ENC are complementary, not competing names for the same technology. ANC is the listening feature: microphones and anti-noise reduce some external sound reaching your ears, especially steady low-frequency rumble. ENC is the call feature: microphone processing attempts to reduce environmental sound in the signal sent to the other person.

Choose based on whose experience you want to improve, then verify fit and model-specific evidence. A pair that advertises both can address both needs, but the acronyms alone do not establish how effective either system will be in your particular surroundings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can earbuds have ANC and ENC at the same time?

Yes. A model can use ANC for the wearer’s listening and ENC for microphone-side call processing. Xiaomi lists both functions for the Redmi Buds 6.

Does ANC stop the person I am calling from hearing background noise?

Not by itself. Listening ANC affects sound reaching your ears. Your caller benefits only from separate microphone processing such as ENC or documented call-noise suppression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is ENC a standardized measurement?

No. ENC is a manufacturer-facing label without a universal performance level. Compare the model’s call documentation and test it with a real listener.

Why does ANC work better on an airplane than on nearby speech?

ANC primarily reduces steady, low-frequency sound such as aircraft or engine rumble. Voices and sudden sounds change more quickly and are harder to suppress consistently.
