Use the Microsoft Edge management service in the Microsoft 365 admin center to control Edge’s built-in mouse gestures. Configure the Mouse Gesture Enabled policy (MouseGestureEnabled): choose Enabled to allow gestures or Disabled to block them. The documented cloud policy applies to Windows devices running Microsoft Edge 112 or later and is managed per browser profile.
What the Mouse Gesture Enabled policy controls
Edge mouse gestures let a user hold the right mouse button and draw predefined patterns on a webpage. Depending on the gesture, Edge can move backward or forward, open a new tab, refresh a page, and perform other supported browser actions. This is an Edge browser feature, not a Windows mouse-driver or touchpad setting.
Microsoft documents the policy as MouseGestureEnabled. Its states have different administrative meanings:
| Policy state | Result in Edge |
|---|---|
| Enabled | Users can use Edge mouse gestures. |
| Disabled | Edge’s built-in mouse gesture feature is blocked. |
| Not configured | The policy imposes no administrative restriction; Microsoft states that the feature is available when the policy is enabled or not configured. |
Disabling this policy does not disable right-clicking, the physical mouse, Windows touchpad gestures, manufacturer utilities from Logitech, Microsoft, Razer or others, browser extensions that add gestures, or gestures implemented by a web application.

The policy is documented for Windows Edge 112 and later only. A cloud assignment to a user does not disable the feature on that person’s macOS, Android or iOS installation. Because the setting is per profile, test it in the managed work or school profile; a user can see different behavior in another Edge profile.
The Microsoft 365 admin-center experience is the Microsoft Edge management service. Microsoft currently documents that this service is not available to customers with GCC plans. Availability and labels can vary by tenant and rollout, so government or sovereign-cloud administrators should verify that Settings > Microsoft Edge exists in their own admin center. See the Edge management service documentation.

- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center with an account that can manage Edge configuration.
- Open Settings > Microsoft Edge. Depending on your tenant’s interface, labels such as Create policy, Configuration policies, Policy settings or Assignments may differ slightly.
- Create a new Edge configuration policy, or open an existing policy that should contain this setting.
- Give it a descriptive name, such as
Edge - Allow Mouse Gestures,Edge - Disable Mouse GesturesorWindows Edge Baseline - Mouse Gestures. Add a description if your organization uses change records. - Add or search for Mouse Gesture Enabled. Searching for the identifier
MouseGestureEnabledis useful when cross-checking the policy against Microsoft’s documentation. - Select Enabled to allow Edge mouse gestures, or Disabled to prevent Edge’s built-in feature.
- Assign the policy to the appropriate Microsoft Entra user or device groups. Start with a small pilot group and expand after verification.
- Review the settings, save or create the policy, and allow time for cloud propagation.
Microsoft states that Edge configuration policies can be assigned to multiple Microsoft Entra groups. If a user receives multiple Edge-management configuration policies with conflicting values, the Edge management service uses policy priority; a priority value of 0 is the highest. Keep one authoritative assignment for this setting where possible. Microsoft notes that Intune configuration policies do not use the same automatic priority behavior. Details are in the Edge management service guidance.

- Sign in to the Windows device with the organizational Edge profile that is in the assigned group.
- Open Microsoft Edge and enter
edge://policyin the address bar. - Search the page for
MouseGestureEnabled. - Confirm that the policy is listed and that its value is the one you selected.
- Use the policy page’s reload or refresh control if available. Restart Edge if the browser does not immediately reflect the change.
- Test an Edge mouse gesture in a normal webpage, rather than testing a Windows touchpad gesture or a third-party utility.
Microsoft describes edge://policy as the browser location for inspecting applied policies. The general configuration reference is available at Configure Microsoft Edge.
Use Intune instead of the Microsoft 365 admin center
Intune is a separate management surface, not another name for the Microsoft 365 admin center. Choose it when Edge settings belong in your Windows device-configuration program.

- Open the Intune admin center.
- Go to Devices > Manage devices > Configuration.
- Select Create > New policy.
- Choose Windows 10 and later, then Settings catalog.
- Search for Microsoft Edge settings and add Mouse Gesture Enabled (
MouseGestureEnabled). - Set the value, assign the profile to user or device groups, and create it.
Microsoft’s Settings Catalog documentation is at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/intune/device-configuration/settings-catalog/, and Edge-specific Intune guidance is at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/configure-edge-with-intune. The documented Settings Catalog route requires an Intune-supported Windows configuration profile and an administrator with at least the Policy and Profile Manager built-in role, or equivalent permissions.
| Requirement | Recommended route |
|---|---|
| Manage Edge policies from Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Edge management service |
| Include Edge in Windows device configuration | Intune Settings Catalog |
| Manage domain-joined Windows devices on-premises | Active Directory Group Policy |
| Normal Intune setting is unavailable | ADMX ingestion or custom OMA-URI, following Microsoft’s MDM guidance |
| Test one local Windows PC | Local Group Policy or registry, not as the primary enterprise deployment method |
| Control macOS, Android or iOS | This particular policy is unsuitable; use a documented platform-specific control instead |
Avoid delivering the same setting through several systems with different values. Microsoft warns that using both an Intune Administrative Templates profile and a custom OMA-URI profile for the same Edge setting can produce unpredictable results. In mixed environments, inspect edge://policy and the policy source rather than assuming a universal precedence order. See Configure Microsoft Edge with MDM.

MouseGestureEnabled does not appear in edge://policy
- Confirm the device is running Windows and Edge is version 112 or later.
- Confirm the policy was saved or created rather than left as a draft.
- Check that the user or device is a member of the assigned Microsoft Entra group.
- Check that the open Edge profile is the organizational work or school profile, not a personal Microsoft-account profile.
- Refresh policies on the
edge://policypage and restart Edge. - Confirm that the tenant has access to the Edge management service; GCC customers should note Microsoft’s documented availability limitation.
- If Intune, Group Policy or local policy is also in use, inspect those systems for a separate deployment.
The policy appears, but gestures still work
- Verify that the value is 0 or Disabled, rather than merely checking that the policy exists.
- Make sure the test is in the targeted work profile and on a supported Windows version of Edge.
- Look for a higher-priority Edge-management policy or another policy source with a conflicting value.
- Restart Edge after refreshing policy data.
- Check whether the observed gesture comes from a browser extension, Windows touchpad settings, mouse-manufacturer software or the web application itself.
The policy is unexpectedly blocking gestures
- Review all Microsoft Edge management policies assigned to the user and device.
- Check Edge management-service priority, remembering that priority 0 is highest there.
- Check Intune, Active Directory Group Policy, custom OMA-URI and local registry configuration for duplicate values.
- Remove conflicting assignments or designate one management system as authoritative.
Operational recommendations
- Enable the policy when users benefit from right-button navigation and there is no conflict with line-of-business applications or remote-access tools.
- Disable it when accidental gestures cause support incidents, interfere with right-button dragging, or the organization wants a standardized browser interface.
- Leave it Not configured when the organization does not need to manage the feature and users should retain Edge’s documented default behavior.
- Document the target groups, policy owner and chosen management surface so later administrators do not create a competing assignment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does disabling MouseGestureEnabled disable right-clicking?
No. It blocks Edge’s built-in mouse gesture feature only. Normal right-clicking and unrelated mouse, touchpad, extension and web-application behavior remain separate.

Microsoft documents the policy as per-profile and not applicable to a profile signed in with a personal Microsoft account. Verify behavior in the managed work or school profile.
Is Intune required to configure this policy?
No. The Microsoft Edge management service in the Microsoft 365 admin center is a separate cloud-management route. Intune is an alternative when Edge settings are part of Windows device configuration.
