On a Windows 11 touchscreen, enable fingertip handwriting at Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink > Handwriting, then select Write with your fingertip. To write, open the touch keyboard from a text field or its system-tray icon and choose the Handwriting layout.
The setting is built into Windows 11, so you do not need a paid handwriting app or a separate accessory for fingertip input. Enabling the option does not itself open the panel or change the keyboard layout; those are separate steps.

What “Write with your fingertip” does
Windows 11’s handwriting panel is one of the layouts inside the touch keyboard. It accepts writing made with a pen or with your finger and converts that input into text in the field you selected. The fingertip switch controls whether your finger can be used in that panel.
It is useful when the on-screen letter keys are awkward, when you want to write short notes directly on a tablet, or when a laptop is being used in tablet mode. It is not a replacement for a physical keyboard in every situation, and turning the switch on does not automatically display the panel. You must still open the touch keyboard and select its handwriting layout.

Check the requirements before changing the setting
- Windows 11: The menu path below uses the current Windows 11 Settings labels.
- A touchscreen: Microsoft describes touch-keyboard entry as a feature for Windows devices with a touchscreen. A non-touch desktop or laptop cannot provide the same fingertip writing experience.
- A text-entry location: You need an app or page with a text field, such as a message, document, browser form, or search box, so Windows knows where to insert the recognized text.
- Touch keyboard access: You can normally summon the keyboard by tapping a text field. You can also use the Touch keyboard icon in the system tray when it is available.
Microsoft’s touch keyboard documentation describes the available layouts and the pen-or-fingertip handwriting panel. Layout availability can vary with the language selected for the keyboard.
Enable fingertip handwriting in Settings
Use this exact sequence to permit finger input:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- In Settings, select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Pen & Windows Ink.
- Expand the Handwriting section.
- Select Write with your fingertip.
Once the option is selected, Windows allows your finger to be used when the handwriting panel is open. This change affects handwriting input; it does not force handwriting to become the default touch-keyboard layout.
Open the Windows 11 handwriting panel
Method 1: Tap a text field
- Open the app or webpage where you want to enter text.
- Tap inside the text field. On a touchscreen device, this should bring up the touch keyboard.
- On the keyboard, open its layout choices and select Handwriting.
- Write in the handwriting area with your fingertip. The panel accepts a pen as an alternative when you prefer pen input.
- Confirm the recognized text appears in the field. If you need to continue typing with keys, switch back to the keyboard layout you normally use.
The first tap chooses the destination for the text; selecting Handwriting chooses how the touch keyboard receives your input. Both actions are required when the handwriting panel is not already selected.

With palm rejection technology, you can rest your hand naturally on the screen without fatigue or accidental touches — and enjoy smooth, uninterrupted writing or drawing
Method 2: Use the Touch keyboard icon
- Find the Touch keyboard icon in the Windows system tray.
- Select the icon to open the on-screen keyboard.
- Open the keyboard’s layout options and select Handwriting.
- Tap the intended text field if it is not already active, then write with your fingertip.
If the icon is not present, Microsoft provides separate guidance for enabling and disabling the touch keyboard. The icon’s absence does not change the fingertip setting; it only removes one convenient way to launch the keyboard.
Choose the correct touch-keyboard layout
The touch keyboard offers more than one arrangement. Microsoft identifies default, split, expanded standard, and handwriting layouts. Only Handwriting opens the writing surface described in this article.
| Layout | Purpose in this task | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Regular on-screen key arrangement | Use it for key-by-key typing; switch layouts when you want to write. |
| Split | Alternative arrangement of on-screen keys | It is not the handwriting surface. Open layout choices and select Handwriting. |
| Expanded standard | Larger standard key arrangement | It remains a key layout rather than the writing panel. |
| Handwriting | Writing area that accepts a pen or fingertip | Select this layout after enabling fingertip input. |
Names and available choices can differ by language. Microsoft notes that some layouts and swipe-based typing features are not available in every language, so do not assume that a layout shown for one keyboard language will appear identically for another.

Write with a fingertip once the panel is open
Place your finger in the handwriting area and form letters, numbers, or words as you normally would on a touch surface. Keep the text field active while you write so the recognized result has a destination. You can move between the handwriting panel and another touch-keyboard layout whenever you need a different input method.
A fingertip is convenient when the device is being held like a tablet or when a pen is not at hand. A pen can be preferable when you want a narrower writing point or already use one with the device. Both are input choices within the same Windows handwriting layout; selecting one does not install another application.
Why the panel may not appear automatically
The touch keyboard does not open after tapping a field
First verify that you tapped an actual editable field rather than a label or a read-only area. If the keyboard still does not appear, use the Touch keyboard icon in the system tray. Microsoft’s touch-keyboard instructions are the reference for turning that icon on when it is missing.

The Touch keyboard icon is missing
The system-tray icon is an alternate launch route, not a requirement for handwriting itself. Use Windows’ touch-keyboard enable/disable controls to restore the icon, then open the keyboard and choose Handwriting. If your device has no touchscreen, it does not meet the touch-input prerequisite for fingertip writing.
The keyboard opens, but there is no Handwriting choice
Open the keyboard’s layout selector rather than looking for a separate handwriting application. The panel is a layout inside the touch keyboard. If it is still absent, check which keyboard language is active; Microsoft warns that layout availability is not identical across languages.

Handwriting is visible, but finger strokes are not accepted
Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink, expand Handwriting, and confirm that Write with your fingertip is selected. Then close and reopen the touch keyboard and choose the Handwriting layout again. The setting and the layout work together: one permits fingertip input, while the other provides the writing surface.

Writing appears in the wrong place
Tap the intended text field before opening or using the handwriting panel. Windows inserts recognized handwriting into the active field, so a different field or window may receive the text if focus changed while you were working.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fingertip or pen: which should you use?
| Input choice | Hardware needed | Best reason to choose it | Where it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fingertip | A Windows 11 touchscreen | No separate writing tool is needed; useful for quick entry or tablet-style use. | The touch keyboard’s Handwriting layout after the fingertip option is enabled. |
| Pen | A pen usable with the Windows touchscreen | Useful when you prefer a finer point or already have a pen available. | The same handwriting layout; Microsoft documents the panel as accepting pen or fingertip input. |
There is no separate Windows handwriting-panel purchase decision. The practical choice is whether to write with your finger or a pen and whether to use handwriting instead of one of the standard key layouts.
Language and layout limitations to keep in mind
Keyboard language affects which touch-keyboard features are offered. Microsoft specifically cautions that some layouts and swipe-based typing are unavailable in some languages. If another Windows 11 device or another language shows a different set of layout buttons, that difference does not necessarily indicate a fault.

A complete start-to-finish checklist
- Confirm the Windows 11 device has a touchscreen.
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
- Expand Handwriting and select Write with your fingertip.
- Tap an editable text field, or select the Touch keyboard icon in the system tray.
- Open the touch keyboard’s layout options.
- Select Handwriting, not default, split, or expanded standard.
- Write with your fingertip and check that the recognized text is entering the active field.
- If a layout is missing, check the active keyboard language; if the keyboard itself is missing, restore its system-tray access through Windows’ touch-keyboard settings.
Key distinction: enabling input versus opening the panel
Two Windows actions are easy to confuse. Selecting Write with your fingertip grants permission for finger strokes in the handwriting panel. Opening the touch keyboard and selecting Handwriting displays the panel. Complete both actions when setting up a device for the first time; after that, you can launch the keyboard from a text field or the system tray whenever you need it.
