If Developer Mode is not listed, connect the device to a Mac, unlock it, trust the Mac when asked, and begin pairing through the computer or Xcode. Apple makes the menu conditional because Developer Mode lowers protections around developer-only functions. It is intended for development-signed apps and Xcode workflows, not ordinary App Store downloads or TestFlight.

What Developer Mode does on an iPhone or iPad
Developer Mode permits an iPhone or iPad to run an app installed for development through Xcode. It also supports development-signed installation and device-control scenarios used by tools such as Apple Configurator. Without it, an app built and signed for development cannot launch on the device.
It does not improve normal app installation. You do not need Developer Mode for apps from the App Store, and TestFlight participation does not depend on this switch. Turn it on only when a development workflow requires it.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple describes the feature as a security boundary: Developer Mode protects people from inadvertently installing potentially harmful software and reduces attack surfaces exposed by developer-only functionality. Treat the setting as a deliberate testing switch rather than a performance or customization option.
What you need before starting
- An iPhone or iPad with a device passcode. You must enter that passcode after the restart confirmation.
- Access to the device’s Settings app and enough time for one restart.
- If the menu is missing, a Mac connection and an unlocked, trusted device so pairing can be initiated.
- If you intend to run an app, an Xcode setup with the iPhone or iPad available as a run destination.
The instructions apply to both iOS and iPadOS. Apple’s documentation does not establish a universal cable requirement for every device generation. Pairing may begin over a wired connection or through a supported wireless pairing workflow; what matters is that the device has been paired or pairing has been initiated.
How to turn on Developer Mode
1. Make the Developer Mode menu appear if necessary
Skip this step if Settings > Privacy & Security already contains Developer Mode. If it does not, connect the iPhone or iPad to a Mac, unlock the device, and respond to the Trust This Computer? prompt by choosing Trust. Enter the device passcode if requested.

Open Xcode’s device workflow or otherwise begin pairing. Apple says the Developer Mode item may not appear until pairing has been initiated or the device has previously been paired to a Mac. Once pairing has started, disconnecting and reconnecting is not normally necessary; return to Settings and check again.

2. Open the setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to the security options and tap Developer Mode.
On an iPad, the labels and path are the same. If you cannot find the item, use the troubleshooting section below rather than enabling an unrelated security option.
3. Switch Developer Mode on
Turn on the Developer Mode switch. iOS or iPadOS displays a warning explaining that the setting reduces some security protections. Read the warning, then tap Restart to continue. The device must reboot; simply leaving the switch on without restarting does not complete activation.
4. Confirm after the reboot
When the device starts, unlock it. A second confirmation appears because the restart is part of the protection. Tap Enable or Turn On, depending on the wording shown on your device, and enter the device passcode. Developer Mode is now active.
5. Launch the development build
Connect or pair the device with the Mac used for development. In Xcode, select the iPhone or iPad as the run destination and launch the app. Xcode can then install and run the development-signed build. If the app still refuses to launch, verify that the device is unlocked, trusted and selected as the active destination, then check that Developer Mode remained enabled.

Why Developer Mode is missing from Privacy & Security
The missing menu is usually intentional, not a failed installation. Apple may keep Developer Mode hidden until the device has been paired to a Mac or pairing has been initiated. This prevents a casual user from enabling a developer-only capability without first starting a development workflow.
Use this recovery sequence
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to a Mac, either with a supported cable or a supported wireless pairing method.
- Unlock the device.
- Accept the trust prompt and enter the passcode if the device asks for it.
- Open Xcode and use its device window or run-destination workflow to initiate pairing.
- Close Settings if it was open, reopen Settings > Privacy & Security, and look for Developer Mode.
If the menu is still absent, confirm that pairing actually completed rather than only charging the device. A charging connection by itself does not establish the development relationship. Try another supported connection method, keep the device unlocked during the first pairing, and repeat the trust prompt if it was previously declined.
When a Mac is not required
You do not need a Mac merely to install App Store software or join a TestFlight beta. Once the Developer Mode item is visible, the switch and restart confirmations happen on the iPhone or iPad itself. A Mac is needed when you must initiate pairing to reveal the setting or when you plan to run an app through Xcode.
Activation workflows compared
| Workflow | What you do | Restart required? | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Menu already visible | Settings > Privacy & Security > Developer Mode, switch on, accept the warning | Yes; confirm again after reboot | Development-signed apps can run after the final passcode confirmation |
| Menu hidden | Connect to a Mac, unlock and trust it, initiate pairing in Xcode, then use the same Settings path | Yes; confirm again after reboot | Pairing exposes the setting and enables the development workflow |
| Wireless pairing | Use a supported wireless pairing flow to initiate or complete the Mac relationship, then enable the setting on the device | Yes | Same Developer Mode capability; Apple does not mandate one cable type for every generation |
| Turning the feature off | Settings > Privacy & Security, switch off Developer Mode | Yes | Xcode-installed apps cannot run until Developer Mode is enabled again |
Do you need Xcode to enable Developer Mode?
Xcode is not required for the on-device taps once the menu is available. It is, however, the normal tool for pairing a device and running a development build. If the menu is hidden, Apple’s pairing requirement means a Mac-based step is generally necessary to make it appear.

After activation, Xcode must recognize the device as a run destination. Keep the device unlocked while the first build is installed, maintain the trust relationship, and select the correct iPhone or iPad in Xcode before pressing Run. Developer Mode does not replace code signing, provisioning or the other requirements of an Xcode project; it only permits the development-signed app to launch on the device.
How to turn Developer Mode off
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Developer Mode.
- Turn the switch off.
- Accept the restart prompt and allow the device to reboot.
After the restart, apps installed through Xcode cannot run while Developer Mode is disabled. To resume testing, return to the same setting, switch it on, accept the warning, restart, and complete the post-reboot confirmation with the device passcode.
Disabling the switch also restores the restriction that prevents developer-only tools from using the device in the ways Apple documents. For example, Apple’s Device Hub safety guidance says that when Developer Mode is disabled, Device Hub can no longer remotely view or control the screen or install software using Xcode or Apple Configurator.

Developer Mode changes the device’s security posture. Its purpose is to permit development functionality that ordinary App Store use does not need, so Apple requires an explicit warning, a restart and a second confirmation. Do not enable it simply because an app, website or unknown person tells you to; establish why the development workflow needs it and who supplied the software.

- Keep the device passcode private; it is required to complete activation after the reboot.
- Review which Mac is trusted before pairing, especially on a shared or borrowed computer.
- Turn Developer Mode off when the development session is over if the device does not need developer-signed apps.
Developer Mode does not make an App Store app more capable, increase system speed or expose a general file system. Its benefit is narrowly defined: it lets approved development workflows install and launch development-signed software.
Troubleshooting common failures
The switch is on, but the app will not launch
- Confirm that the device completed the restart and that you tapped Enable or Turn On after unlocking it.
- Check Settings > Privacy & Security > Developer Mode and verify that the switch is still on.
- Make sure the device is selected as Xcode’s run destination rather than a simulator or a different connected device.
- Reconnect or re-pair the device if Xcode no longer lists it, then keep it unlocked while launching.
The trust prompt never appeared
Unlock the device before connecting it and reconnect using a supported connection. If the computer was previously refused, the trust relationship may not have been established; respond to the prompt when it returns and enter the passcode. A connection that only supplies power does not prove that pairing has begun.
Developer Mode disappeared after it was previously available
Check that you are looking under Privacy & Security, not the general Privacy page. If the device has not been paired to the Mac recently, initiate the device workflow again, then revisit the setting. Apple’s documentation treats the menu as conditional, so its visibility can depend on the pairing state.

The device restarts but there is no second confirmation
Unlock the device fully and wait for the post-reboot alert. If it was dismissed, return to the Developer Mode setting and check whether the switch is enabled. A development build cannot run until the final confirmation and passcode step have completed.
Xcode worked yesterday but stopped after Developer Mode was turned off
This is expected. Turning the feature off blocks Xcode-installed apps until you enable Developer Mode again and complete another restart and post-reboot confirmation. Repeating the build steps without re-enabling the setting will not bypass that restriction.
