What Ember Mug 2 actually does
The Mug 2 uses an internal heating system and temperature sensor to maintain the temperature you select. Ember’s current product information describes a 120°F–145°F control range and says the mug holds the chosen setting within ±0.5°F. That precision is useful for tea drinkers who dislike the narrow window between “too hot” and lukewarm.

There are two capacities: 10 oz and 14 oz. The smaller version is suited to a conventional evening cup; the larger version gives you more liquid before you need a refill. Both are designed around the same temperature-control concept.

Set a comfortable drinking temperature
After initial setup in the Ember app, the mug remembers your preferred temperature. Ember lists tea as a use case, and the app includes a Tea Timer feature. This is particularly practical for a ritual in which brewing, steeping and drinking happen over an extended period rather than in one sitting.

Use it without keeping your phone nearby
The mug operates without a phone at a default 135°F. You need the app to change the temperature, assign presets or use Tea Timer, but you do not have to keep the app open for the mug to maintain its stored setting. In other words, app setup is part of ownership, while phone-free use is possible afterward at the configured temperature.
Battery life: the coaster determines the experience
Ember rates the 10 oz Mug 2 for up to 1.5 hours away from its charging coaster. The 14 oz model is rated for up to 80 minutes at 135°F. Those are maximum figures, not guarantees for every household: ambient temperature, whether the lid is used and the drink’s starting temperature can all affect runtime.

On the coaster, the mug can maintain its temperature for extended use. That makes coaster placement the key habit: if your tea session lasts longer than the battery rating, keep the coaster beside your reading chair or desk. An Ideal Home hands-on account published January 17, 2026, described roughly 90 minutes of untethered use and all-day use when the mug remained on its coaster. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a universal runtime promise.

What it cannot do
It does not reheat cold tea
BBC Science Focus’s independent review states that the mug “doesn’t reheat cold liquids.” Ember Mug 2 maintains a drink that is already within its operating range; it is not a rapid reheater, kettle or substitute for boiling water. If your tea has gone cold, you must warm a fresh drink separately before putting it in the mug.

It cannot go in the microwave or dishwasher
The same review notes that the mug is not microwave- or dishwasher-friendly. Hand-washing is required, including care around the charging contacts. These restrictions matter more for a nightly routine than they might for occasional use, because cleaning becomes a daily task.
Setup and a practical first use
- Charge the mug. Place it on the supplied coaster before the first long session.
- Install and open the Ember app. Pair the mug and choose a temperature between 120°F and 145°F.
- Save a preset. Store the setting you want for tea so it can be recalled without repeated adjustment.
- Prepare tea normally. The mug maintains the drink; it does not boil water or correct an over-steeped brew.
- Decide where the coaster belongs. For sessions longer than roughly 80–90 minutes, leave the mug on the coaster rather than relying on battery operation.
- Wash by hand after use. Do not microwave the mug or place it in a dishwasher.
Is Ember Mug 2 worth it for slow evening tea?
It is a strong fit if your main annoyance is tea cooling while you take an hour or more to finish it. The 120°F–145°F range, 1°F adjustments and stated ±0.5°F hold target directly address temperature drift, while the stored setting means the ritual can become repeatable rather than improvised.

The trade-off is convenience. You must complete app setup for anything beyond the 135°F default, keep the coaster available for sustained sessions, accept finite off-coaster battery life and hand-wash the mug. Someone who wants a cordless cup that can revive cold tea, survive a dishwasher cycle or remain hot all evening anywhere in the house should choose a conventional insulated mug plus a separate reheating method instead.
For readers who already brew tea carefully and then let it sit while relaxing, Ember Mug 2’s value is consistency: it protects the temperature you chose instead of promising capabilities the hardware does not have.
