Elon Musk said on June 10, 2024, that Apple devices would be banned at his companies if Apple integrated OpenAI into its operating system. He added that visitors would have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they would be stored in a Faraday cage. The reports document a conditional threat, not proof that the ban or a cage-based check-in system was ever implemented.
What Musk said
Musk made the statement in a post on X shortly after Apple announced new artificial-intelligence features and a partnership with OpenAI. Reuters quoted him as writing: “And visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage.”

The condition mattered: he said Apple devices would be banned at his companies if Apple integrated OpenAI at the operating-system level. The reported plan concerned visitors checking devices at the entrance, not evidence that employees or guests had already surrendered phones. Calling this a “seizure” overstates the wording in the reports; “check their Apple devices at the door” is the documented phrasing.

Apple announced a package of AI features and an OpenAI partnership on June 10, 2024. Reuters described Apple’s approach as combining processing on the device with cloud computing. Musk called the arrangement “an unacceptable security violation” and questioned whether Apple could ensure that OpenAI protected users’ security and privacy. Those were Musk’s objections, not an independent finding that Apple’s safeguards had failed.

Contemporaneous coverage said Apple’s proposed ChatGPT integration was permission-based. TechCrunch reported that Siri would ask before sending a question to ChatGPT and that users could choose to submit photos, PDFs, or other documents. Those details described the 2024 announcement; they should not be treated as a guarantee of current behavior or device eligibility without checking Apple’s latest documentation.
CBS also reported Musk’s then-current legal dispute with OpenAI and his work on xAI. They provide context for the public exchange, but they do not establish his motive.

What a Faraday cage would do
A Faraday cage is a conductive enclosure designed to reduce electromagnetic transmission. When a phone is enclosed, the material and construction can attenuate radio signals and may stop the device from communicating with cellular networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or other services.

Shielding is not automatically total. Performance depends on factors including frequency, the conductivity of the material, seams and openings, enclosure shape, and how the product was tested. A seller’s use of the term “Faraday cage” therefore does not prove that every signal is blocked.

In Musk’s statement, the cage reference describes signal-shielded storage for phones held at the entrance. The reports do not identify a supplier, model, or enclosure that any of his companies purchased or used. A Faraday phone pouch or small shielding box is a related product category, but no such item should be presented as Musk-endorsed or as guaranteed to block all communications.
Threat versus confirmed policy
| Question | What the contemporaneous reports establish |
|---|---|
| Was there a proposed ban? | Musk said Apple devices would be banned at his companies if Apple integrated OpenAI at the operating-system level. |
| What would visitors do? | He said visitors would check Apple devices at the door for storage in a Faraday cage. |
| Did the policy take effect? | The reviewed Reuters and CBS reports document the threat, not implementation of a company-wide ban or entrance procedure. |
| Was a specific cage identified? | No product, supplier, capacity, or test result was named. |
| Was Apple found to have violated security? | No. The security criticism was Musk’s characterization of the proposed integration. |
What the episode means for visitors and employees
At face value, the proposal would have created an entrance rule: guests carrying Apple hardware would leave it with reception, and the device would remain isolated from radio networks while stored. That could reduce the risk of a phone communicating during a visit, but it would also require secure custody, clear return procedures, and a way to handle emergency calls or devices that are not Apple products.

None of those operational details were supplied in the reported statement. There is no established evidence in the cited coverage that Musk’s companies adopted the arrangement, applied it to all locations, or extended it to non-Apple phones.

Bottom line on the headline
Musk threatened a conditional Apple-device ban tied to Apple’s proposed operating-system integration with OpenAI and said visitors would check their devices into Faraday-shielded storage. “Seize” is a stronger word than the reported “check … at the door,” and the available reporting does not show that the threat became an operating policy.
