Its diabetes medicine Mounjaro also contains tirzepatide, but Lilly describes it under a different U.S. label. Retatrutide, Lilly’s leading next-generation obesity candidate, has positive Phase 3 results but remains investigational. The business is growing quickly, though Lilly’s reported revenue figures are company-wide—not a breakdown of weight-loss-drug sales.
What weight-loss drugs does Eli Lilly make?
As of October 4, 2026, Lilly describes Zepbound and Foundayo as its marketed U.S. medicines for chronic weight management. They differ in active ingredient and route. Mounjaro is also part of Lilly’s incretin-drug business, but Lilly describes it as a type 2 diabetes medicine, not as a U.S. chronic weight-management brand. Product indications can differ by country; the descriptions below refer to Lilly’s U.S. product information.

Zepbound and Mounjaro share tirzepatide as their active ingredient, but that does not make their U.S. brand labels interchangeable. The approved product, indication and prescribing information matter; a medicine should not be treated as a weight-loss option simply because it contains the same molecule as one that has a weight-management indication.

Lilly’s latest quarterly results available in the cited material were for the second quarter of 2026. The company reported $23.0 billion in total revenue, up 48% from Q2 2025, and attributed growth primarily to higher volume for Mounjaro and Zepbound. It did not report that total as weight-loss-drug revenue.

The figures show why a fast-growing drug franchise should not be equated with a disclosed weight-loss business revenue total: Lilly’s cited release attributes growth to Mounjaro and Zepbound volume, while reporting the financial totals for the company as a whole.
What is retatrutide, and is it approved?
Retatrutide is Lilly’s investigational once-weekly medicine that activates GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. It is not approved, and Lilly says it is legally available only through clinical trials. Positive trial results do not change that status or establish what an individual patient would experience.

TRIUMPH-2: obesity or overweight with type 2 diabetes
In a Phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study lasting 80 weeks, Lilly reported that participants receiving the 12 mg dose lost an average of 49.6 pounds, or 20.8%, at week 80. Lilly also reported an average A1C reduction of up to 1.6 percentage points. These results apply to the study’s participants with obesity or overweight and type 2 diabetes; they are not a prediction of an individual outcome. Lilly said the results were presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes meeting and published in The Lancet in 2026.

Lilly reported that the 9 mg and 12 mg arms met the study’s primary and key secondary endpoints at 68 weeks. The company announced up to 28.7% average weight loss and a 4.5-point reduction in WOMAC pain score. Lilly said 84.0% of participants began with a BMI of at least 35 kg/m². These are company-reported findings in a selected population with obesity or overweight and knee osteoarthritis, not an approved product claim.

What is next in Lilly’s obesity-drug pipeline?
Retatrutide is the most advanced investigational obesity candidate described in Lilly’s announcements. In its Q2 2026 release, Lilly said its Phase 3 data package was complete to support global registration submissions for obesity, obstructive sleep apnea and knee osteoarthritis pain. It said it planned to submit a U.S. Biologics License Application (BLA) in Q1 2027 and also described positive results from three additional Phase 3 obesity trials. The filing date is a company plan, not a confirmed submission, regulator acceptance or approval.
Eloralintide and combination research
Lilly has also described eloralintide as an investigational amylin-receptor agonist with Phase 3 obesity studies ongoing. The company reported a Phase 2 study of eloralintide alone or combined with tirzepatide, and described the combination eloraTZP as investigational. These candidates are pipeline research, not marketed alternatives.

How to read Lilly’s weight-loss business claims
- Separate brands from molecules. Zepbound and Mounjaro both contain tirzepatide, but Lilly describes them with different U.S. product uses.
- Separate corporate growth from product sales. Q2 2026 revenue and guidance are Lilly-wide figures; the cited release does not provide a weight-management-only total.
- Keep trial outcomes tied to their context. Retatrutide’s reported percentages and other endpoints belong to particular doses, populations and study durations, and the candidate remains investigational.
- Distinguish a filing plan from regulatory status. Lilly’s stated Q1 2027 BLA plan does not mean retatrutide is approved or that a decision will occur then.
