Some elementary schools are already using artificial-intelligence systems to question children about classwork or score them while they read aloud. In Albany, New York, Snorkl conducts a follow-up conversation after an in-class assignment and sends the exchange to a teacher. In New Mexico, San Francisco and other districts, Amira uses speech recognition to assess reading fluency. The systems serve different purposes, collect different data and carry different safeguards, but parents are raising the same questions: Does this improve learning, was the rollout transparent, and are children’s voices and other information being used with meaningful consent?
What “AI testing” looks like in elementary schools
Snorkl: a post-assignment conversation
The Times Union reported on October 17, 2026, that students in Albany were using Snorkl after reading or watching material selected by a teacher. After a history lesson, for example, the chatbot asks each child questions about the material and reports the exchange to the teacher. Albany officials said teachers, not the chatbot, make grading decisions. Snorkl says its platform is used in 10,000 school districts worldwide, a company-reported figure rather than an independent count.

Parents organized local Schools Beyond Screens chapters and requested limits on screen time, teacher-use guidelines and a slower, more consultative rollout. Caroline Corrigan, an Albany parent, questioned whether the technology is a better way to learn when it has not been used long enough to establish effectiveness and said parents do not want their children to feel like experimental subjects.
Amira: reading aloud into a speech-recognition system
Amira is used for reading assessment rather than a conversational check. New Mexico’s Public Education Department required students in kindergarten through second grade to read aloud through Amira, with scores feeding school and district performance data. More than a dozen New Mexico districts and one charter school opted out in favor of non-AI programs, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

That assessment creates a voice recording, not merely a typed answer. Albuquerque parents presented nearly 800 signatures calling for a halt, citing biometric-privacy concerns, possible bias against non-native English speakers and an opt-out form that did not identify the assessment as AI-based. After the complaints, Amira deleted prior-year Albuquerque Public Schools recordings, and APS said assessment recordings would be deleted within 48 hours. New Mexico guidance allows a district to use paper tests or request a waiver for another assessment.
How the two systems differ
| Issue | Snorkl in Albany | Amira in reading assessments |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Formative conversation about a teacher’s assignment | Formal reading-fluency screening for K–2 students |
| What the child does | Reads or watches assigned material, then answers chatbot questions | Reads text aloud while speech-recognition software analyzes the performance |
| Who makes the final judgment | Teacher; Albany officials said the bot does not determine grades | Automated score contributes to school and district assessment data; local procedures determine how educators use it |
| Data involved | Conversation responses and the interaction report sent to the teacher | Voice recordings and derived reading scores |
| Alternatives identified by districts | Teacher-led discussion, writing or other classroom checks | Paper testing or another assessment through a state waiver |
| Evidence and concerns | Albany parents said effectiveness and developmental fit remain unclear | Moderate evidence ratings, reported accent and disability problems, and disputes over consent and retention |
Why parents are organizing
Effectiveness is not established for every use
Parents are not objecting to one single product or one single definition of AI. They are asking whether an automated exchange adds anything that a teacher listening, discussing or reviewing written work would not provide. In Albany, families said the technology arrived before there was a clear picture of whether it improves learning. For young children, the developmental question is especially important: a quick chatbot exchange may measure recall or comfort with a device rather than sustained understanding, writing, discussion and the productive struggle that teachers observe directly.
Notice and consent have been unclear
Albuquerque and New Mexico parents said notices and opt-out forms did not plainly explain that children would interact with AI or have their voices recorded. A general technology notice does not necessarily tell a family what is collected, who can access it, how long it is kept, whether it is used to improve a model or how to choose a non-AI option.

Voice recordings raise retention and biometric questions
A child’s voice is sensitive student information. The Albuquerque dispute made retention concrete: parents sought deletion assurances, Amira removed prior-year APS recordings, and APS announced a 48-hour deletion window for assessment recordings. Families should ask whether deletion covers backups, derived files and vendor copies, and whether the school can document completion.
Accuracy and equity vary by child
Teachers told the San Francisco Standard that Amira struggled with accents, speech-related disabilities and faulty microphones. The Albuquerque Journal also reported concerns about non-native English speakers. A child can therefore receive a lower automated result because the system misrecognizes speech or the equipment fails, not because the child lacks the targeted reading skill. Students with language-related individualized education programs may need accommodations or a different assessment altogether.
Screen time and human interaction are part of the decision
Parents in Bethlehem objected to iPad use during kindergarten play time, arguing that device minutes can displace play, conversation and teacher interaction. That concern overlaps with AI assessment: even a short task adds another screen-based interaction to a school day, while the educational value may be uncertain.

What is known about Amira’s evidence
The San Francisco Standard reported that the What Works Clearinghouse and Evidence for ESSA rated the available evidence as moderate. The only randomized trial reviewed tested the earlier Project LISTEN prototype with 178 students, not necessarily the current product or every current implementation. A large Louisiana study was company-funded. Boston University researchers announced plans for a randomized trial, so stronger independent evidence is not yet available.

An earlier policy said recordings helped improve AI models; a revised policy said recordings were used strictly for instruction and teacher assistance. Families should obtain the policy in effect for their child’s district and ask when that version became effective, rather than relying on an old screenshot or a generic vendor page.
Can a family opt out?
The answer depends on the state, district and assessment. New Mexico guidance specifically permits paper testing or a waiver for another assessment, and several districts and a charter school used non-AI programs. Other districts may offer only a local opt-out, an accommodation or no alternative unless a parent requests one.

- Ask the teacher or principal what the system does. Request the product name, whether it is formative or part of a required assessment, what the child must say or type, and whether a human reviews the result.
- Request the complete notice and consent form. Look for voice recording, biometric or derived data, model-training language, vendors or subcontractors, access controls and retention periods.
- Ask for the non-AI path in writing. In New Mexico, request a paper test or ask the district to pursue the state waiver. Elsewhere, ask whether a teacher-led discussion, written response or another approved assessment can replace the AI task.
- Document a deletion request. Ask what will be deleted, including backups and vendor-held copies, the deadline and the person who will confirm completion.
- Escalate unresolved issues. Use the district privacy officer, special-education team or state education department if the school cannot explain consent, accommodations or the alternative assessment.
Policy responses are moving toward age limits and supervision
Katy Independent School District
For the 2026–27 school year, Katy ISD prohibits student-facing generative AI from kindergarten through sixth grade. Seventh graders may use it only when directed by a teacher, and eighth-grade use requires permission for approved tools. Teachers may still use district-approved AI behind the scenes under supervision. Assistant Superintendent Sanée Bell said AI can support learning but cannot replace the thinking, struggle or growth that learning requires. Parents in Schools Beyond Screens Katy are seeking a broader prohibition until independent research establishes safety and effectiveness.
New York City
New York City announced a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI through eighth grade. The city plans twice-yearly AI-literacy classes in high school and supervised pilots for some older students. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said schools should teach children to ask questions, challenge assumptions and interrogate premises. The city also proposed daily screen-time caps of 30 minutes for grades 3–5 and 45 minutes for grades 6–8.

What a responsible school rollout should include
- A plain-language notice naming the tool, purpose, data collected and every recipient of the data.
- Meaningful consent or a clearly explained opt-out that does not penalize a child.
- A teacher-led or paper alternative, especially for required assessments.
- Human review before an AI result affects instruction, intervention or grades.
- Published retention and deletion deadlines, including vendor backups and derived data.
- Validation with multilingual learners, varied accents, speech-related disabilities and students using individualized accommodations.
- Age-appropriate screen-time limits and opportunities for discussion, writing, play and direct teacher feedback.
- Independent evidence for the specific product and use, not just a related prototype or a company-funded study.
AI assessment is therefore not one uniform practice. A chatbot’s post-assignment questions, a speech-recognition reading score and a teacher’s final judgment are different steps with different risks. Parents are organizing because schools adopted some of those steps faster than independent evidence, consent procedures and privacy protections developed.
