Electrospinning vs. centrifugal spinning: Which method is right for making fibers?

Neither process is universally better. Electrospinning draws a polymer jet with an electric field, while centrifugal spinning uses rotational force to eject and stretch the material. Choose electrospinning when its attainable fiber morphology, properties and process control meet your specification. Choose centrifugal spinning when production efficiency is a priority and you can maintain stable, low-defect collection. The polymer, solvent or feed formulation, rheology, apparatus and operating settings determine whether either process will work.

A conventional single-needle electrospinning setup is commonly limited in throughput, whereas reviews describe centrifugal spinning as a high-efficiency route. That does not establish a universal production-rate multiplier, finer-fiber winner or lower-cost process. A bench trial on the intended machine and formulation is the deciding evidence.

The short answer: start with the product specification

Define the fiber product before selecting the machine. Record the acceptable diameter range and distribution, morphology, bead frequency, mechanical and thermal properties, mat uniformity, output target and repeatability. Then test both methods, or the most plausible one, using the same material specification and a collection procedure that represents your eventual product.

Electrospinning can be the better choice when a controlled electric-field process produces the required fine-fiber structure and the available output is sufficient. Centrifugal spinning can be the better choice when you need more productive fiber formation and your formulation can be ejected and drawn under rotation without excessive beads or unstable collection. A method name alone cannot predict the final performance.

How the two processes form fibers

Electrospinning: an electric-field-driven jet

In electrospinning, an electric field acts on a polymer-containing feed and draws it into a jet. The jet travels toward a collector while the solvent or other volatile component leaves, allowing a solid fiber to form. The field, feed behavior and apparatus geometry together determine whether the jet remains continuous and whether the deposited material has the required diameter and morphology.

Electrospinning is attractive when your specification depends on the fine-fiber morphology that the particular formulation and apparatus can produce. “Electrospun” does not, by itself, guarantee a certain diameter, pore structure or mechanical property; those outcomes still need to be measured on your material.

Centrifugal spinning: rotational-force-driven ejection

Centrifugal spinning uses rotation to push a polymer feed outward through an opening or openings. The resulting streams are stretched as they travel away from the rotating source and solidify into fibers at the collector. The rotational force replaces the electric field as the primary driving mechanism, so the equipment, feed behavior and collection geometry differ from an electrospinning line.

Reviews characterize centrifugal spinning as a high-production-efficiency approach. Its practical advantage exists only if the feed can be ejected consistently and the apparatus controls air movement, vibration and collection well enough to keep defects within specification.

What “faster” means in a fair comparison

For the common question “Which is faster?”, the defensible answer is qualitative: conventional single-needle electrospinning is described as low throughput, while centrifugal spinning is often described as efficient. No directly comparable, universal production-rate multiplier has been established across polymers and machines.

Process or reference point Evidence-supported output information How to interpret it
Conventional single-needle electrospinning A 2019 open review reports a typical feed rate of 1–5 mL/h, or 0.1–1.0 g/h by fiber mass. This is a baseline for that conventional configuration, not a guarantee for every electrospinning setup and not a head-to-head centrifugal comparison.
Centrifugal spinning Reviews describe high production efficiency, without a universal rate that applies to all formulations and apparatus. Measure deposited mass or usable fiber area per unit time on the intended equipment; do not convert the qualitative description into a fixed multiplier.

Throughput also depends on how much of the collected material is usable. A faster stream that creates many beads, uneven mats or frequent interruptions may deliver less specification-compliant fiber per hour than a slower, stable process. Report both gross output and accepted output.

Which method makes finer fibers?

There is no universal winner. Fiber diameter and its distribution depend on formulation, rheology, solvent behavior, apparatus design and settings. Electrospinning may provide the fine-fiber morphology required by a particular product, but that is a capability to verify, not a promise attached to the label.

A 2022 comparative study of poly(ethylene oxide) found that centrifugally spun fibers could emulate electrospun fibers in properties, morphology and spinnability under the conditions studied. The finding is important because it shows that centrifugal spinning can reach an electrospinning-like result for a specific polymer and process window. It should not be generalized to every polymer, solvent system or machine.

Measure the full diameter distribution rather than quoting only an average. Include the spread, outliers and changes across the collection area. A process that produces a narrow distribution may be preferable to one that occasionally produces a smaller nominal average but has large defects or variability.

Defects, consistency and the role of the apparatus

Beads in centrifugal spinning

Centrifugal spinning can form beaded fibers when air perturbation or device vibration disrupts the drawing process. Beads may change pore structure, surface area, strength and appearance, so count them as a product defect when your specification requires continuous fibers.

Check whether bead frequency changes with rotational settings, feed behavior, collection distance, airflow or mechanical balance. Do not assume a formulation that spins smoothly in one device will behave the same way in another. Record vibration and environmental conditions during every comparison.

Instability in electrospinning

Electrospinning can also become inconsistent when the formulation or operating window does not support a stable jet. Track interruptions, visible jet changes, uneven deposition and variation in mat thickness. A stable-looking run is not sufficient evidence: verify diameter, morphology and properties after collection.

Repeatability is a product requirement

Run repeated batches rather than selecting the best-looking sample. Compare defect frequency, diameter distribution, mat uniformity, mechanical properties and thermal properties. The 2022 PEO comparison treats spinnability, morphology and resulting properties as connected requirements; optimizing only one can leave the product unusable.

Material and formulation fit comes before machine choice

The same polymer can behave differently when concentration, solvent or other feed variables change. Rheology affects whether a continuous jet can be drawn, how much the stream stretches and whether it breaks into droplets or beads. Solvent behavior affects solidification and the final morphology. The apparatus then adds its own constraints through the feed path, force application and collector.

  • Confirm that the chosen formulation has demonstrated stable spinnability in the intended configuration.
  • Keep the formulation fixed while comparing methods; changing polymer and process at the same time makes the result impossible to attribute.
  • Document viscosity or other rheological indicators used by your laboratory, along with solvent composition and feed condition.
  • Inspect fibers for diameter distribution, beads, continuity and deposition uniformity before testing performance.
  • Repeat the test after any formulation change, because a small change can move the process outside its stable window.

A formulation that works in electrospinning is not automatically transferable to centrifugal spinning. The reverse is also true. Treat transfer as a new process-development task.

Equipment, safety and scale-up implications

Equipment fit

Electrospinning requires equipment capable of operating an electric-field-driven process safely. Centrifugal spinning requires a rotating system that can eject the feed reliably and collect the resulting fibers. In either case, match the equipment to the polymer, feed, desired output and laboratory controls; a generic device listing is not evidence that it will meet your specification.

Before a trial, verify that the apparatus supports the required operating range, collection method, environmental controls and measurement access. Establish procedures for safe operation, especially where the process involves electrical fields, moving parts, solvents or other laboratory hazards.

Scale-up is a design problem, not a label

Electrospinning scale-up and alternative fiber-production methods are established topics in the literature, but scale-up depends on design and process conditions. A laboratory result does not establish commercial readiness, cost per mass or stable operation at a larger output. Increasing feed or adding production elements can change jet interactions, airflow, heat removal, collection uniformity and defect rates.

Match the method to the application

Reviews discuss fibers from these processes in filtration, biomedical materials, energy storage and environmental uses. Those application categories do not establish a universal winner. Each uses a different balance of surface area, pore structure, strength, thermal behavior, chemical compatibility, uniformity and production constraints.

Filtration

Prioritize the required fiber distribution, mat thickness, pore structure and defect tolerance. Compare filtration performance on mats made at equivalent areal mass and with the same test protocol; otherwise a difference may reflect mat loading rather than the spinning method.

Biomedical materials

Evaluate morphology and mechanical behavior together with formulation suitability and process repeatability. A visually fine fiber is not enough if the resulting mat lacks the required strength or if the formulation cannot be produced consistently.

Energy-storage components

Measure the thermal and mechanical properties relevant to the component, as well as morphology and uniformity. A higher production rate is useful only when the material still meets those performance limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Environmental materials

Define the exposure conditions, lifetime and acceptable variation before selecting a process. Confirm that the chosen method can produce the required structure repeatedly rather than relying on broad claims about nanofibers.

A decision workflow you can run in the laboratory

  1. Write the specification. Set target diameter range, allowable distribution, bead limit, mat uniformity, mechanical and thermal requirements, accepted output per hour and batch-to-batch variation.
  2. Select a representative formulation. Fix polymer, solvent or feed composition and document rheological behavior. Use the same formulation for both methods when a direct comparison is intended.
  3. Check equipment readiness. Confirm safe operation, force-generation capability, feed handling, collector design and measurement access for the selected apparatus.
  4. Establish a stable operating window. Vary one process setting at a time and record whether the stream remains continuous, whether deposition is uniform and whether defects appear.
  5. Collect repeat samples. Produce enough batches to expose variability. Keep collection time and collected area or mass consistent.
  6. Characterize the fibers. Measure diameter distribution, morphology, bead frequency, mat uniformity, mechanical properties, thermal properties and any application-specific performance.
  7. Calculate usable productivity. Report accepted fiber mass or area per unit time, not only feed rate. Include interruptions, rejected material and setup time.
  8. Choose by weighted requirements. Select the process that meets all mandatory limits with the most robust operating window. If neither does, reformulate or redesign the apparatus before making a scale-up decision.

How to compare the methods without misleading yourself

Use identical definitions for “good fiber.” If one method is judged by its best microscope image and the other by an entire mat, the comparison is biased. Predefine the sampling locations, number of images, diameter calculation, bead-counting rule and mechanical or thermal tests.

Separate three outcomes in your records:

  • Spinnability: whether the formulation can produce a continuous, collectable stream under the tested conditions.
  • Structure: diameter distribution, morphology, beads and deposition uniformity.
  • Performance: mechanical, thermal and application-specific results.

Then add operational data: accepted output, interruptions, cleaning or changeover time, and any safety or handling constraints. This prevents a process from appearing superior simply because it was evaluated on a narrower metric.

Common decision mistakes and corrections

Assuming centrifugal spinning is always faster

Its high-efficiency reputation is a useful reason to test it, not a guaranteed rate. Correct the assumption by measuring accepted output on your apparatus and formulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming electrospinning always makes finer fibers

Fiber size is formulation- and process-dependent. Correct the assumption by comparing full diameter distributions and morphology under matched specifications.

Transferring settings between polymers

Spinnability changes with polymer and solvent behavior. Correct the assumption by establishing a new operating window whenever the feed changes.

Ignoring beads because the average diameter looks good

Beads can alter functional performance even when the average diameter meets a target. Correct the assumption by making bead frequency an explicit acceptance criterion.

Using laboratory output as a commercial forecast

Scale-up depends on equipment design and process conditions. Correct the assumption by requalifying the product at each scale and reporting usable output rather than extrapolating a single run.

Practical selection guide

Decision axis Electrospinning is a stronger candidate when… Centrifugal spinning is a stronger candidate when…
Driving mechanism and equipment An electric-field-driven process is appropriate and the laboratory can operate its equipment safely. A rotational-force-driven process suits the formulation and suitable equipment is available.
Output objective The attainable morphology and properties meet the specification even with a conventional single-needle setup’s limited throughput. Production efficiency is a priority and the process can control beads and collection consistently.
Material and process fit The specific feed has demonstrated stable spinnability in the intended configuration. The feed can be ejected and drawn reliably under centrifugal conditions without unacceptable defects.
Product verification Bench trials establish the required fiber distribution and mat properties. Bench trials establish acceptable morphology, repeatability and usable output.

Bottom line for a method-selection decision

Choose electrospinning when its electric-field-driven process gives you the required structure and properties with acceptable, repeatable output. Choose centrifugal spinning when its rotational process delivers the required structure while improving usable productivity and maintaining defect control. The 2022 poly(ethylene oxide) comparison shows that centrifugal fibers can match electrospun outcomes under specific conditions, while the broader reviews show why throughput and defects remain setup-dependent. Run a controlled, specification-led trial before committing to a process or a scale-up path.
