Yes—electrocatalytic hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) has shown enough scope and scale-up evidence to be taken seriously as a potential tool for industrial organic synthesis, but it has not been shown to be an industrial manufacturing platform. A 2023 ACS Catalysis review describes a 100 g-scale HAT protocol using a lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4) electrolyte and inexpensive graphite electrodes. A separate report on 2022 research describes flow scale-up of cobalt-hydride reactions for cycloisomerisation, isomerisation and reduction.

Those results demonstrate that the chemistry can move beyond an analytical, milligram-scale experiment. They do not establish a commercial plant, routine manufacturing adoption, process economics, energy savings or a lifecycle advantage. The important question is therefore not whether electrochemical HAT is already industrialized, but where its chemistry and reactor formats could solve problems that conventional electron-transfer methods handle poorly.

What electrochemical hydrogen atom transfer is

Hydrogen atom transfer means moving a hydrogen atom—one proton and one electron together—from a donor site to an acceptor site. In a synthetic reaction, that transfer can break a strong C–H or Si–H bond, create a carbon- or silicon-centered radical, or deliver hydrogen to an unsaturated bond. The resulting intermediate can then undergo bond formation, rearrangement or reduction.

In an electrocatalytic version, electricity is used to generate or regenerate the species that performs HAT. The electrode supplies the redox equivalent, while a catalyst or mediator controls how that equivalent is converted into a hydrogen-atom donor or abstractor. The electrical circuit therefore replaces at least part of the role normally played by a stoichiometric chemical oxidant or reductant.

This is different from a simple one-electron transfer. Conventional electron-transfer catalysis first adds or removes an electron from a substrate. Many useful molecules are difficult to reduce or oxidize directly, however, because their redox potentials are unfavorable. HAT can activate those comparatively redox-inactive substrates through bond strength and hydrogen-atom energetics instead. The 2023 review presents electrochemical HAT as complementary to, rather than a universal replacement for, direct electron-transfer catalysis.

How the catalytic cycle creates useful reactivity

Electrode-driven catalyst generation

An electrochemical cell contains an anode, a cathode, an electrolyte and the reaction mixture. Applying a potential or current changes the oxidation state of a catalyst or mediator at an electrode. That activated species transfers a hydrogen atom to, or abstracts one from, the organic substrate. The catalyst is then returned to its starting state at an electrode or through a coupled chemical step.

The exact sequence depends on the catalyst and reaction. “Electrochemical HAT” is therefore a family of mechanisms, not a single universal cycle. A protocol can use the cathode to generate a metal hydride, for example, whereas another system may create an organic or inorganic HAT mediator that reacts with a C–H bond.

What cobalt hydride does

The cobalt-hydride work described by Chemistry World generates a cobalt-hydride species electrochemically. That metal hydride can deliver a hydrogen atom to an unsaturated or radical intermediate, or abstract hydrogen in a way that starts a chain of carbon-centered transformations. The reported reactions included cycloisomerisation, isomerisation and reduction.

For that reported protocol, the article highlights the absence of a separate chemical reductant, additives and complicated experimental procedures. Those are features of the specific cobalt-hydride method, not guarantees for every electrochemical HAT reaction. Other systems may need a mediator, a sacrificial reagent, a supporting electrolyte or carefully controlled additives.

Which organic reactions have been demonstrated

The 2023 review places electrochemically driven HAT in several reaction classes:

  • Direct C(sp3)–H functionalization: a normally inert aliphatic C–H bond can be converted into a site for introducing a new functional group without first installing a conventional leaving group.
  • Si–H functionalization: hydrogen-atom activation of silicon–hydrogen bonds can support the formation of new silicon-containing products.
  • Alkene hydrofunctionalization: HAT can help add hydrogen and another fragment across an alkene, providing a route to saturated or otherwise functionalized products.

The cobalt-hydride report adds cycloisomerisation, isomerisation and reduction examples in a flow context. These categories matter because they test different aspects of the chemistry: ring-forming selectivity, movement of an unsaturation within a molecule, and net hydrogenation or reduction. They should not be read as proof that every substrate in those classes works equally well; demonstrated scope remains tied to the substrates and conditions in each publication.

What the scale-up evidence actually shows

Evidence Reaction and format Scale or operating detail What it establishes
ACS Catalysis review, 2023 HAT protocol for a larger-scale transformation 100 g scale; LiBF4 electrolyte; graphite electrodes An experimental protocol was compatible with a transformation at 100 g scale using relatively inexpensive electrode material.
Chemistry World account of 2022 research Cobalt-hydride cycloisomerisation, isomerisation and reduction Flow scale-up was reported; the account does not give a single mass figure for the flow runs. The reaction family was investigated in a continuous-flow reactor rather than only in small batch experiments.

A 100 g experiment is substantial compared with a discovery reaction run solely to obtain an analytical sample, and flow operation addresses mixing, heat transfer and residence-time control in a more process-oriented way. Neither fact proves that a reaction is ready for a production plant. A manufacturing process also needs reproducible long campaigns, impurity control, electrode lifetime data, validated work-up, waste treatment, hazard analysis and a cost model.

Why industrial chemists may care

Replacing a stoichiometric reductant in the right reaction

If electricity regenerates the active catalyst, the process may avoid buying, handling and disposing of a stoichiometric chemical reductant. That can simplify raw-material logistics and reduce the amount of salt or by-product generated by a reduction step. The benefit is reaction-specific: the cell still requires an electrolyte, electrodes and a power supply, and some protocols may use additional reagents.

Accessing redox-inactive molecules

Many feedstocks contain C–H bonds that are difficult to activate by direct electron transfer. HAT offers another selection rule: the relevant hydrogen-atom bond strengths, the mediator’s reactivity and the desired radical pathway can determine whether activation is feasible. This could open transformations that are awkward under a purely oxidative or reductive electrochemical regime.

Using flow to control electrochemical conditions

Flow cells place a large electrode area close to a thin reaction channel. That geometry can improve mass transfer and make current, potential and residence time easier to control than in a large undivided batch vessel. The reported cobalt-hydride work is important because it examined flow scale-up, but the available account does not establish a production throughput, a continuous operating duration or a favorable cost per kilogram.

How this compares with conventional electron-transfer catalysis

The useful comparison is not “electrochemical HAT versus all other synthesis.” A chemist should first ask which activation mode fits the substrate and desired selectivity.

The hardest technical problem: choosing and understanding the catalyst

The ACS Catalysis authors say the field has been held back by incomplete understanding of both catalytic mechanisms and catalyst selection. Their review states: “Despite these attractive properties, electrochemically driven HAT catalysis has been largely overlooked due to the lack of understanding of both the catalytic mechanism and how catalyst selection should occur.”

That uncertainty affects scale-up as well as discovery. A mediator that gives clean conversion in a small cell may behave differently when current density, electrode area, mixing, gas evolution or heat removal changes. Mechanistic knowledge is needed to distinguish the intended HAT step from direct electrode reactions, radical-chain pathways and unproductive hydrogen evolution.

Bond dissociation energies

The strength of the bond being broken and the bond being formed helps determine whether HAT is thermodynamically plausible. A mediator must be reactive enough to abstract or deliver hydrogen, but not so reactive that it attacks solvent, product or an easier C–H site.

Redox potentials

Redox potentials determine whether the electrode can generate the active catalyst at a practical potential and whether unwanted substrate oxidation or reduction competes. They also influence the choice between constant-current and constant-potential operation.

Mediator properties

The mediator controls selectivity, turnover and compatibility with the electrolyte and solvent. Its concentration, lifetime and regeneration rate become more consequential as the reaction moves from a small flask to a flow cell. A successful process must show that the mediator is not rapidly consumed or deposited on the electrode.

What a practical development workflow would examine

  1. Define the activation problem. Identify the C–H, Si–H or alkene bond that must react and determine whether direct electron transfer already offers a simpler, selective route.
  2. Match the mediator to the bond. Compare the relevant bond dissociation energies and redox potentials before selecting a HAT catalyst. This avoids treating HAT as a generic solution for every inert C–H bond.
  3. Establish electrochemical controls. Measure conversion and selectivity as current or potential, electrode material, electrolyte and catalyst loading change. Include controls without catalyst and without applied current to reveal non-electrochemical pathways.
  4. Check the physical cell. Record electrode area, spacing, polarity, solvent conductivity, temperature and mixing. These variables determine current density and can change the product distribution.
  5. Move to flow deliberately. Once the chemistry is selective in batch, test residence time, channel dimensions, pressure, gas management and steady-state operation. A flow result should include a mass balance and evidence that performance remains stable over time.
  6. Evaluate recovery and waste. Quantify electrolyte and catalyst retention, electrode wear, work-up streams and product purification. Avoid claiming a lower environmental burden until those streams and electricity use are measured.

What remains unknown before industrial adoption

  • Economics: The cited material does not provide a cost per kilogram, electricity consumption, capital cost or comparison with a chemical reductant.
  • Lifecycle performance: No lifecycle assessment establishes that the electricity, electrodes or electrolyte produce a lower overall environmental impact.
  • Long-duration reliability: The evidence does not establish electrode lifetime, fouling behavior, catalyst degradation or uninterrupted multi-day operation.
  • Broad substrate coverage: Demonstrated reaction classes do not imply universal compatibility with complex industrial feedstocks, protecting groups or mixtures.
  • Manufacturing status: A 100 g batch and flow scale-up are experimental milestones, not evidence of a commercial plant or broad manufacturing uptake.

How to interpret the “industrial boost” claim

The strongest defensible claim is that electrocatalytic HAT could expand the set of organic transformations that are practical to investigate at useful scale. It combines a different activation mode with an adjustable electrical input, and the cited work shows both a 100 g example and flow experimentation. That combination justifies further process development.

The weaker, unsupported claim would be that the method is already cheaper, greener or more scalable than established industrial chemistry. Those conclusions require measured energy demand, yield and selectivity at production-relevant throughput, equipment costs, waste accounting, product quality and a comparison with the incumbent route. None is established by the available reports.

Bottom line for process researchers

Electrochemical HAT is best viewed as a promising complement to conventional electron-transfer catalysis. It can use an electrochemically generated HAT mediator to functionalize C(sp3)–H and Si–H bonds or hydrofunctionalize alkenes, while cobalt-hydride chemistry has been taken into flow studies of cycloisomerisation, isomerisation and reduction. A 2023 review also records a 100 g-scale protocol with LiBF4 and graphite electrodes.

Those demonstrations answer “can the chemistry be scaled beyond a tiny screening reaction?” with a qualified yes. They do not answer whether a particular route is economically or environmentally superior, or whether industry has adopted it. The next advances depend on clearer mechanisms, rational catalyst selection and process data collected under sustained, production-relevant operation.
