Electric Fencing vs. Physical Barriers for Keeping Deer Out of Crops

For deer and elk in North American crop settings, woven-wire fencing is the stronger choice when you need a durable physical barrier; electric fencing can cost less to build and suit seasonal or adaptable exclusion, but it depends on a maintained shock deterrent. Neither is a universal winner: the right choice depends on the animals, crop value, area, intended lifespan, and your capacity to maintain the fence.

How the two approaches keep wildlife out

A physical barrier aims to stop animals from passing over, through, or under it. Woven wire is the main example in deer-exclusion guidance: its purpose is to block entry, not to teach an animal to avoid contact.

Electric fencing usually presents a much smaller physical obstacle. It deters animals through an electric shock, so its effectiveness depends on suitable design, correct installation, and enough maintained voltage. USDA APHIS describes fencing more broadly as a physical barrier, a behavioral or physiological deterrent, or a combination of these approaches (USDA APHIS guidance on exclusion).

Compare the trade-offs

Consideration Woven-wire barrier Electric fencing
How it deters Physically blocks passage when designed and installed for the target animal. Usually relies on shock-based deterrence rather than forming an impenetrable barrier.
Deer guidance Cornell Cooperative Extension describes woven wire as the most effective physical barrier for deer; it cites eight- to ten-foot fences for excluding deer from large areas. Cornell says deer may be deterred by a five- to six-foot electric fence, despite being able to jump that height. Those figures are deer-specific design guidance, not universal specifications.
Construction cost High initial cost is a significant drawback, especially for tall fences and large areas. Montana State University Extension characterizes properly built electric fences as relatively inexpensive to construct compared with woven wire. No current, broadly applicable installed price is established.
Maintenance and repair Generally lower maintenance than electric fencing, but damaged woven-wire sections can be difficult to repair. Requires regular monitoring and vegetation control to maintain shocking power; high-tensile electric fencing can be easier to repair.
Seasonal use Best suited to growers seeking a lasting barrier rather than a portable seasonal deterrent. Temporary polytape may suit seasonal damage reduction or smaller areas. Maryland Extension describes it as the lowest-upfront-cost option, but less reliable overall than permanent approaches.
Best fit Potentially justified for high-value crops, larger protected areas, and a long service life. May suit growers who can install to specifications and keep up with voltage checks and vegetation management.

These are qualitative comparisons, not a nationwide cost quote or a guarantee of exclusion. Montana State University Extension recommends weighing construction and maintenance costs against the value protected over multiple years, rather than judging a fence on one season alone (Montana State University Extension’s deer and elk fencing guidance).

When woven wire makes more sense

Choose woven wire when your priority is a durable, physical boundary and the value or scale of the crop can justify the initial investment. Cornell’s 2024 vegetable guide identifies woven wire as its most effective physical deer barrier and describes high-tensile woven wire as strong and durable. It cites an eight- to ten-foot height for excluding deer from large areas; Oklahoma State University Extension likewise favors woven wire in the deer crop-field context it addresses, while emphasizing its expense. Recommendations differ by source and setting, so do not treat one height or layout as suitable for every property or species.

  • Account for the full perimeter: area and shape affect how much fencing, labor, and maintenance are required.
  • Plan for repairs: a durable fence can still be damaged, and woven-wire repairs may be more difficult than electric-fence repairs.
  • Check local guidance for the animals you need to exclude; deer recommendations do not establish dimensions for other wildlife.

When electric fencing makes more sense

Electric fencing can be a practical alternative when a tall physical barrier is too costly, when a temporary system fits the season, or when you can maintain the fence closely. Cornell Cooperative Extension describes multi-strand high-tensile, vertical, and sloped designs as options that may effectively exclude wildlife. Its five- to six-foot guidance is for deer, not a general height rule.

Performance depends on the complete system, not just the wire or tape. The design must suit the target animal, installation must follow specifications, voltage must remain adequate, and vegetation must be managed so it does not short the fence. Cornell identifies unsuitable design, incorrect installation, and inadequate maintenance as frequent failure causes. Maryland Extension also notes that conditioning deer to avoid the fence can support electric exclusion.

Temporary electric fencing

Temporary polytape may be worth considering for seasonal reduction of deer damage or smaller areas where portability and low upfront cost matter. Maryland Extension cautions that it is less reliable overall than permanent options. That makes it a riskier choice where a crop cannot tolerate breaches or where consistent protection is essential.

Evidence from a specific crop trial

In a USDA APHIS Wildlife Services study, fieldwork on sunflowers in southwestern Colorado took place from July through October in 2011 and 2012. The tested polyrope electric fences reduced deer and elk damage and presence within plots; the tested repellent and winged fence did not reduce ungulate activity. This result applies to those methods, seasons, location, and crop, not to every electric-fence design or wildlife problem (USDA APHIS Wildlife Services study record).

How to decide for your field

  1. Identify the target species. Start with the animal causing damage and seek local, species-specific design guidance. Deer and elk are the focus of the strongest evidence here; it does not establish a suitable fence for every species or region.
  2. Define the protection job. Decide whether you need a lasting barrier around a large field or seasonal reduction of damage in a smaller area. A temporary deterrent and a permanent physical boundary solve different problems.
  3. Estimate the crop value at risk. Compare likely avoided damage with construction, installation, and recurring maintenance costs over the fence’s expected useful life. There is no universal price per foot or return-on-investment figure established for all locations.
  4. Choose a system you can maintain. If you choose electric fencing, plan for voltage monitoring and vegetation control. If you choose woven wire, budget for the larger initial outlay and potentially difficult repairs.
  5. Match installation to the design. Use locally appropriate specifications for height, layout, and components. For electric systems, use compatible wire or polytape, insulators, posts, grounding components, an energizer, and a voltage tester; no specific brand is established as best.

Bottom line on the trade-off

For a long-lasting physical barrier against deer, woven wire is the more direct approach if the crop and protected area justify its initial cost. Electric fencing offers a potentially less expensive build and greater flexibility, but only if its design, voltage, and vegetation management are kept up. Compare the whole cost and maintenance burden against the damage you expect to prevent, and use guidance tailored to your target species and location.
