Electric Car vs. Gas Car: How to Compare Total Energy Use and Emissions

To compare an electric car with a gas car fairly, use the same vehicle class, lifetime distance and emissions boundary for both. Count vehicle and battery manufacturing, fuel or electricity production and delivery, driving, and end-of-life; report energy use separately from greenhouse-gas emissions. Under one U.S. Department of Energy model scenario, a representative 2025 electric SUV has 46% lower life-cycle greenhouse-gas emissions per mile than a comparable gasoline SUV—but that result depends on the vehicles and electricity assumptions, not a universal EV advantage of exactly 46%.

What counts as total energy use and emissions?

A tailpipe comparison counts emissions released while a vehicle is driven. It misses gasoline extraction, refining and delivery, as well as electricity generation and vehicle production. A well-to-wheel comparison includes energy production and delivery through vehicle use. A cradle-to-grave comparison adds vehicle and battery production and end-of-life, making it the more complete boundary for comparing lifetime impacts. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center explains these distinctions in its electric-vehicle emissions overview.

For either boundary, compare like with like: the same vehicle class, annual distance and lifetime. State the geography, electricity mix and data year, vehicle efficiency, and whether the figures describe specific models or representative vehicles. A larger vehicle, larger battery, different grid, or longer lifetime can change the result.

Are electric cars cleaner over their full life cycle?

In the DOE’s modeled U.S. comparison, yes: a representative 2025 electric SUV has 46% lower life-cycle greenhouse-gas emissions per mile than a comparable gasoline SUV. The analysis uses R&D GREET 2024 and the 2023 NREL Standard Scenarios Mid-case grid mix. It counts fuel-production-facility construction, vehicle and battery production and end-of-life, and vehicle fuel use. The result is a specific model scenario, not a guarantee for every EV, gas car or location. DOE’s R&D GREET Life Cycle Assessment Model page describes life-cycle assessment as a way to measure and compare environmental impacts of products such as fuels, vehicles and materials.

The sources identify different major contributors for the two vehicle types: gasoline combustion is the largest greenhouse-gas contributor for the gasoline SUV, while electricity production is the largest contributor for the EV in this comparison. EV battery manufacturing adds emissions before the car is driven; gasoline production and combustion add emissions throughout use. A fair lifecycle result counts both sides.

The International Energy Agency’s global analysis provides a separate benchmark, not a directly interchangeable result. In its Stated Policies Scenario, a medium-size battery-electric car sold in 2023 has about half the lifecycle emissions of an equivalent oil-fueled internal-combustion car over 15 years or about 200,000 km. For medium-size cars purchased in 2035, that scenario models lifetime emissions of 38 tonnes of CO2-equivalent for an ICE car and 15 tonnes for a BEV. These are scenario estimates, not measured lifetime totals from cars already driven that distance. The DOE and IEA figures differ in geography, vehicle representation, years and model assumptions, so they should not be treated as the same test. See the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2024 emissions analysis.

How does the local electricity mix change an EV’s emissions?

An EV has no tailpipe emissions while driving, but its electricity may have emissions from generation. The amount depends on where the car is charged and the electricity mix used in the calculation. There is therefore no location-free EV emissions figure. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s quick comparison uses national-average electricity emissions based on eGRID 2023 and directs readers to more detailed regional estimates; DOE’s AFDC likewise explains that electricity sources affect lifecycle emissions.

For a quick U.S. reference, EPA’s comparison page, updated February 18, 2026, gives 39 kWh per 100 miles as the median energy consumption for a typical model-year 2025 EV, using combined city/highway driving. Its simplified gasoline assumptions use 8,887 grams of tailpipe CO2 per gallon and apply an upstream factor of 1.25 to account for fuel production. These inputs support that tool’s estimate; they are not a full cradle-to-grave comparison of particular vehicles. See EPA’s car-versus-EV comparison for its assumptions and regional-resource links.

Keep the electricity method consistent. Average-grid emissions and marginal-electricity emissions answer different questions; do not use one for the EV and the other for another part of the same comparison without clearly explaining why. DOE AFDC’s data sources and assumptions page documents the vintages behind its inputs. For example, it lists 2024 state electricity generation and emissions alongside some vehicle-efficiency inputs from 2019, so outputs from that tool should not be described as a current model-year vehicle test.

How to make an apples-to-apples comparison

  1. Match the vehicles. Compare the same size and class, and identify model years or representative averages. Battery capacity and vehicle size affect production impacts as well as energy use.
  2. Set the boundary. For a full lifetime comparison, choose cradle-to-grave and include production, energy supply, operation and end-of-life for both vehicles. Label tailpipe-only or well-to-wheel results instead of calling them total lifecycle emissions.
  3. Specify location and energy supply. Use a relevant country, state or region and state the electricity data year. Keep average or marginal electricity treatment consistent.
  4. Hold driving service constant. Use the same annual mileage and lifetime years or distance. Production emissions are spread across the miles a vehicle travels, so a different lifetime can change the per-mile comparison.
  5. Report energy and greenhouse gases separately. State whether energy means fuel or electricity used by the vehicle or lifecycle primary energy. Preserve units, then report lifecycle greenhouse gases separately, such as g CO2e per mile or per kilometre.
  6. Test the assumptions that could change the result. Vary electricity carbon intensity, efficiency, vehicle and battery size, and lifetime distance. For plug-in hybrids, also vary the share of driving done electrically.

The IEA EV Life Cycle Assessment Calculator, last updated June 5, 2024, lets users adjust country or region, vehicle size, distance, lifetime, battery, fuel consumption and electricity emissions. Any calculator output is only as relevant as its selected inputs.

Why energy use and emissions are not interchangeable

A greenhouse-gas reduction percentage does not tell you the total energy saved. Energy can be reported as total energy or fossil energy, while greenhouse-gas accounting reports climate-warming emissions, commonly in CO2-equivalent. DOE’s GREET model supports energy metrics as well as greenhouse gases, air pollutants and water impacts. Put energy and emissions in separate columns, use consistent units and state whether the energy figure is vehicle-use energy or lifecycle primary energy.

What about battery-emissions payback and plug-in hybrids?

Battery manufacturing raises an EV’s production-stage emissions, while a gasoline car continues to incur emissions from petroleum production and combustion as it is driven. There is no single break-even mileage that applies to all EVs: the point depends on vehicle and battery production, grid emissions, efficiency and lifetime distance. Compare specific inputs with a lifecycle calculator rather than applying a universal mileage rule.

Plug-in hybrid results depend on charging frequency and how much driving actually happens in electric mode. The IEA reports a European Commission finding that real-world CO2 emissions for PHEVs were around 3.5 times laboratory values; lower real-world electric-mode use and charging than assumed in type approval are among the reasons. Treat that as a finding about PHEVs, not as an EV-versus-gas result.
