The documented workflow in this guide is for the PC edition of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. PC Gamer’s guide, updated April 25, 2025, retested older commands against Remastered and marked individual commands where they worked or differed. Most classic commands remain usable, but that does not make every command universal.

Remastered modernizes the 2006 game and includes the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions, along with additional downloadable content. The original PC game has its own long-established console-command behavior. Do not assume that a command marked as working in Remastered has identical results in every original-game installation, mod setup, or unofficial port.

Achievement behavior is a particularly important difference. PC Gamer reports that console commands in the original game do not interfere with achievements, while Oblivion Remastered warns that using cheats disables achievements. Treat the Remastered warning as decisive for a save on which you still want achievements.
PC instructions are separate from console play
The tilde-key procedure and the commands below are PC guidance. Bethesda’s control documentation covers default mouse-and-keyboard bindings and notes that changed bindings may differ. The available documentation does not establish an equivalent cheat-console method for PlayStation or Xbox, so do not present these keystrokes as console-platform instructions.
How to open and use the Oblivion Remastered console on PC
- Make a separate save. Use a manual save before entering a command. Keep an untouched save so you can return to it if a command produces a crash, quest problem, or unexpected world change.
- Use the default keyboard layout. While playing on PC, press the tilde key, shown as
~. This is the documented key for opening the developer console. If your keyboard layout or custom bindings place that key elsewhere, the console may not appear in the expected way. - Enter one command at a time. Type the command exactly, including spaces and the required values. Square brackets in this article indicate a value you replace; they are not normally typed as part of the command.
- Press Enter. The game processes the command when you confirm it. Watch for the expected change before trying another command.
- Close the console. Press the tilde key again to return to normal play.
- Test from the backup if anything looks wrong. If the game crashes or a quest behaves unexpectedly, quit without overwriting your clean save and reload it.
Commands can be powerful because they alter player statistics, inventory, map data, objects, and quest state directly. A successful command is not necessarily a reversible command, which is why a backup is more useful than relying on an undo operation.

The following examples are the commands specifically documented as working in Remastered. They are a practical starting set, not a guarantee that every legacy command behaves the same way.

Understanding placeholders and capitalization
[#] means a number, such as a quantity or attribute value. [Quest ID] and [Stage] are also placeholders. Do not paste the brackets unless the game’s own command syntax specifically requires them. Entering an item or quest identifier incorrectly can result in no change or an unintended change.
Targeting matters for unlock
unlock is different from an inventory command: it operates on a world object selected through the console. Aim at the door, container, or other lock before entering the command. If the wrong object is targeted, the command may affect that object instead of the one you intended.
How to use cheats without damaging a save
Keep a clean save and a test save
Make a manual save before opening the console, then use a second save for experimentation. This gives you a recovery point if a quest becomes stuck, an object changes state, or the game becomes unstable.

Change one system at a time
Run one command, close the console, and verify the result. Combining several inventory, attribute, map, and quest changes makes it difficult to identify which command caused a problem. It also makes a later rollback harder.

Be especially cautious with quest commands
completequest and setstage alter progression rather than simply giving you an item. A quest may rely on dialogue, scripts, rewards, or later stages that you have skipped. If a quest command is necessary, record the quest identifier and stage you used and keep the pre-command save.
Remember the achievement consequence
In Remastered, using cheats disables achievements. Decide before entering the first command whether the current character is an achievement-focused playthrough. The warning applies even when the command seems harmless, such as adding a small amount of gold.
Expect compatibility differences
The tested command list is representative. PC Gamer notes that most original commands continue to work, while some differ, and its tables identify compatibility command by command. Avoid treating an untested legacy code as guaranteed in Remastered. If a command is not in the documented working examples, test only on a disposable save.

- Travel to Anvil Lighthouse. Use the lighthouse as your visible reference point rather than searching for an unverified map marker.
- Move into the water west of the lighthouse. The reported location is underwater, so search the area on the western side rather than inland around Anvil.
- Inspect the underwater surroundings carefully. Move slowly enough to check the seabed and nearby objects. Visibility, position, and swimming control can make a small item easy to miss.
- Use a normal save before the search. Keep a manual save before entering the water so you can retry the search without losing progress if you become disoriented or encounter a problem.

If you cannot find the item, first confirm that you are playing the Remastered version and that you are searching west of Anvil Lighthouse. The tilde key does nothing
Confirm that you are on the PC version and using a keyboard, then check whether your keyboard layout or custom controls changed the key position. Bethesda’s control page documents default bindings but cautions that altered bindings can differ. The available evidence does not establish a universal replacement key for every layout.

A command produces no visible result
Check spelling, spaces, identifiers, and quantities. For unlock, verify that the intended object was targeted before the command was entered. For item and quest commands, an incorrect form ID or quest ID can prevent the expected change.
The game crashes or a quest behaves strangely
Stop entering commands, quit without overwriting the clean save, and reload it. Console commands can cause crashes or unusual bugs, so restoring the pre-command save is safer than stacking additional commands in an attempt to repair the state.
Achievements stopped tracking
That behavior is expected after cheats in Oblivion Remastered according to the game’s warning. Start or continue an unmodified playthrough if achievements matter to you; do not assume that turning a toggle such as tgm back off will restore eligibility.
