Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: Elden Ring is a single-player action RPG whose world can be opened temporarily to summoned guests, invaders, duelists, and rescuers. It is not a persistent-world MMO. Elden Ring Nightreign is a separate, standalone co-op action-survival game built around matchmaking into self-contained expeditions. If you want a friend to help with a boss or area in your own save, Elden Ring fits. If you want the game to organize a complete co-op run with a defined start, escalating objectives, and a final boss, Nightreign is the closer match to an MMO-style group session—without actually being an MMO either.
What “Soulslike MMO” means in this comparison
“Soulslike MMO” is not a single, standardized genre label. Some players use it for a persistent online world with large groups; others mean any Souls-inspired game that emphasizes online cooperation. The official material for Elden Ring and Nightreign supports a narrower, more useful comparison: an individual host’s world versus matchmaking-driven expeditions.

Elden Ring’s campaign remains centered on one player’s save. Multiplayer visitors enter that player’s instance for a purpose, and the connection ends under clearly defined conditions. Nightreign, by contrast, asks players to choose solo or cooperative play before an expedition, then structures the run around exploration, combat decisions, a three-day-and-night cycle, and a climactic Nightlord encounter. Neither game creates the always-populated, continuously shared world associated with a traditional MMO.

How Elden Ring co-op actually works
A host opens a particular world
In Elden Ring, one player is the host. The host uses a multiplayer remedy to reveal summon signs, then selects a sign placed by another player or interacts with a summoning pool. The official guide advises players to be in approximately the same area for a connection. A password helps friends find one another instead of relying on a completely open pool of signs, but it does not turn the campaign into a shared save.
The invited player is a guest in the host’s world. The guest can fight enemies, explore the available area, and help with the host’s objective, but the host remains the player whose world state is being advanced. The arrangement is closer to an escort mission or a temporary boss party than to an MMO guild moving through a common server.
Joining a friend: the practical sequence
- Have both players load the game and move to approximately the same region.
- Agree on a multiplayer password if you want to prioritize one another’s signs.
- The guest places a summon sign, either directly or through an available summoning pool.
- The host uses a multiplayer remedy to reveal signs and selects the friend’s sign.
- Play the chosen area or boss objective together, remembering that the guest is in the host’s world rather than merging two campaign saves.
A password improves discovery among friends, but it does not remove the session’s other rules. In particular, a co-op password does not make the connection persistent and does not automatically prevent invasions when cooperative play is active.
Two guests is the normal cooperative limit
The official Elden Ring guidance limits the host to two cooperative guests at a time. That is the answer to the common question, “How many friends can join me?” You can form a host-and-two-guest co-op party, not a large raid group. The game’s manual describes up to four players in the online session when other multiplayer roles are counted, but that figure should not be read as four cooperative guests.
Guests also operate under restrictions while they are present. The guide notes that Torrent is unavailable and fast travel is disabled during the session. Those limitations preserve the feeling of a contained visit: the party travels through the host’s local area on foot rather than treating the entire map as a seamless shared lobby.
What ends an Elden Ring session
Co-op is deliberately temporary. A session can end when the host or a guest dies, a connection fails, someone uses the item that ends the session, or the party completes a boss or mini-boss objective. When the session ends, guests return to their own worlds. The host keeps the progress that belongs to the host’s save; a guest does not receive a continuously synchronized copy of that campaign.
This explains why Elden Ring co-op can feel excellent for a difficult area yet unsuitable for a group trying to complete an entire campaign together. Friends repeatedly need to establish new sessions as objectives are completed or as one of the terminating events occurs.

Invasions are part of the bargain
Elden Ring’s online design is not cooperative-only. The official guide describes invasions as generally available when a host has opened the world through co-op. An invading player targets the host’s world and attempts to defeat the party. The host can also use Taunter’s Tongue to invite invasions under additional conditions.

Therefore, bringing a friend can make a difficult area easier while also making the world eligible for an adversarial encounter. A password narrows who can find a friend’s summon sign; it is not a guarantee that random hostile players cannot appear. Treat the co-op session as a tactical risk-and-reward choice rather than a private lobby with every outside interaction disabled.
Duels, hostile signs, and hunter rescue
Players who want a fair fight can arrange a duel with a hostile summon sign instead of relying on an invasion. A host can also receive help from hunters responding to a call for assistance. These systems give Elden Ring several distinct multiplayer moods: cooperative progression, deliberate competitive combat, and emergency rescue when an invader arrives.
That variety is a major difference from a conventional MMO party finder. Elden Ring does not place every participant into one role queue or a single social hub. The host chooses how the world is opened, and the available multiplayer role follows from that choice.

Asynchronous multiplayer: seeing players without sharing a world
Elden Ring remains socially connected even when nobody joins your live session. Messages can offer warnings or misdirection. Bloodstains show where another player died. Phantoms briefly replay other players’ movements, and summon signs advertise possible assistance. These traces make the world feel inhabited without placing those players in the same continuous instance.
Group passwords can prioritize messages, bloodstains, phantoms, and signs from people using the same group password. That is a discovery and filtering tool, not a persistent shared-world system. You are seeing signals left by other players, not watching their current characters occupy your campaign.
Nightreign is built around expeditions, not campaign visits
A separate game with a different loop
Bandai Namco describes ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN as “a standalone multiplayer co-op action survival game.” It is set in the Elden Ring universe, but it is not an online mode that converts the original campaign into an MMO. Its official description centers on changing maps, a three-day-and-night cycle, exploration and combat choices, and boss encounters that culminate in a Nightlord fight.
The result is a run-based structure. You enter an expedition, make decisions with the group, survive its escalating encounters, and reach the expedition’s concluding fight or failure state. The session has a designed arc from the beginning rather than being an open-ended visit attached to one player’s ordinary campaign route.

Choosing solo or cooperative play
The official starter guide says solo play can be online or offline, while co-op requires an internet connection. Players choose the mode before starting an expedition. You can use a matchmaking password to play with friends, but the password still sits inside the expedition framework; it does not create a permanent party that follows you between every run.
- Choose solo or cooperative play before launching the expedition.
- For co-op, confirm an internet connection and set a matchmaking password if you are coordinating with friends.
- Match with the intended party and enter the expedition.
- Explore the changing map, make combat and route decisions, and manage the expedition’s day-and-night progression.
- Continue through the run’s encounters toward the Nightlord fight, or accept the consequences of an unsuccessful expedition.
The host affects teammates’ rewards
Nightreign’s starter guide makes the matchmaking host relevant to progression: the host’s world state influences the rewards received by teammates. This is not the same arrangement as Elden Ring’s guest simply helping a host defeat a boss in the host’s save. Before starting, friends should understand that the expedition’s host context can affect what other participants receive from the run.
Asynchronous echoes inside an expedition
Nightreign retains the series’ indirect social language. The starter guide describes grey phantoms reenacting active players’ movement and red phantoms left by players who died; a red phantom can leave equipment behind. These echoes provide information and occasional resources without putting the original player into your live session. Nightreign therefore combines a more explicit co-op structure with asynchronous traces rather than abandoning that design entirely.
Deep of Night shows how explicit Nightreign matchmaking can become
Deep of Night is a mode-specific example, not a rule for every Nightreign expedition. Its official description says that one to three players can start an expedition, that matchmaking generally pairs players with similar depth ratings, and that wins and losses change those ratings.
- Group size: one to three players.
- Connection: online-only.
- Matching: generally based on similar depth ratings.
- Rating: victories and defeats change the rating.
- Leaving: quitting or disconnecting incurs a penalty unless the player immediately rejoins.
These rules create a stronger ladder-like commitment than ordinary Elden Ring co-op. They also illustrate why you should not generalize a single Nightreign mode to the entire game. Mode rules, ratings, penalties, balance, and matchmaking behavior can change with patches.
Persistence: the biggest difference for a regular group
Elden Ring favors drop-in assistance
If your group wants to keep one person’s campaign moving, Elden Ring works well when everyone accepts the host model. The host decides which area to open, the guests help with that local objective, and the session ends when the objective or another terminating event occurs. To continue, the group establishes another session in the next eligible area.
The advantage is control over a handcrafted open-world route. The disadvantage is administrative friction: summoning, repeating sessions, and replaying sections for each friend’s separate save. A guest’s successful help does not automatically complete the same objective in the guest’s world.
Nightreign favors complete shared runs
Nightreign makes the expedition the unit of play. The group enters together, responds to the run’s changing conditions, and works toward its culminating encounter. That structure is better suited to a scheduled multiplayer night because the session has a recognizable beginning and end.
It is still not an MMO persistence model. Expeditions are discrete, and the host’s state can affect rewards. The game organizes players around runs rather than maintaining one world in which every friend’s long-term character progress is continuously visible.

Matchmaking and social scale
Elden Ring’s matching is contextual. Players need compatible locations and game states, then use signs, pools, or passwords. This can feel personal because you choose a particular sign and invite a particular helper, but it can also feel less predictable than a conventional matchmaking queue.
Nightreign makes matchmaking the front door for the expedition. Passwords support friend groups, while modes such as Deep of Night add rating-aware matching. This reduces the need to search a map for an individual sign, but it also means the game’s matchmaking rules determine how the run is assembled.
Neither system guarantees a specific queue time. Availability varies by platform, region, time of day, current population, mode, connection quality, and the character or rating conditions used for matching. No reliable player-count or queue-time statistic is established by the official material considered here, so treat anecdotal claims about everyone—or nobody—being online with caution.
Which experience should you choose?
Choose Elden Ring co-op if you want:
- Help with a particular boss, dungeon, or stretch of open world.
- To keep one player’s campaign as the organizing save.
- The possibility of invasions, duels, and hunter rescue alongside cooperation.
- Asynchronous messages, bloodstains, phantoms, and summon signs even when playing alone.
- Short, tactical visits rather than a dedicated expedition lobby.
Choose Nightreign if you want:
- A game whose central activity is an expedition designed for solo or co-op play.
- Matchmaking and passwords at the start of a run.
- A structured three-day-and-night loop with changing maps and a Nightlord finale.
- Group decisions that matter throughout a complete run instead of only during a host’s local objective.
- Mode-specific systems such as Deep of Night’s one-to-three-player matchmaking and depth ratings.
Do not choose either expecting a traditional MMO
Neither title, on the evidence available, provides a continuously shared campaign world where many players permanently occupy the same map, quests advance for everyone simultaneously, and a party remains together between sessions without re-forming. Elden Ring is explicitly host-centered. Nightreign is expedition-centered. Calling Nightreign “more like an MMO” is useful only as a shorthand for its organized co-op matchmaking; it should not be taken as a technical genre classification.
Connection and session troubleshooting
A friend cannot see the summon sign in Elden Ring
- Move both characters to approximately the same area, as recommended by the official guide.
- Confirm that the host has used the multiplayer remedy needed to reveal signs.
- Check that both players entered the same multiplayer password, if one is being used.
- Verify that the intended guest placed a sign rather than waiting for a pool interaction in a different location.
- Remember that eligibility and matchmaking conditions can be affected by the players’ current game state and location.
The Elden Ring session ended unexpectedly
First distinguish a normal ending from a connection failure. A host or guest death, completion of a boss or mini-boss objective, deliberate use of the session-ending item, and a lost connection can all return guests to their own worlds. Re-form the session after a normal objective completion; if the disconnect repeats, check both players’ network stability and try a smaller, less congested area.
A Nightreign expedition will not start
- For co-op, confirm that the device is online; only solo play is documented as available offline.
- Recheck the matchmaking password and have every friend enter it exactly.
- Make sure everyone is attempting the same expedition mode, especially when using Deep of Night.
- If a player disconnected from Deep of Night, have them rejoin immediately when possible to avoid the mode’s stated penalty.
- Check the game’s current patch notes, because matchmaking, ratings, penalties, and balance can change.
Platforms, editions, and update caveats
The official Nightreign product page lists availability for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, with standard, deluxe, and collector’s editions shown. Edition contents and store availability are changeable, so verify the platform and the current listing before buying. The comparison above concerns multiplayer structure, not the contents or value of a particular edition.
Official pages accessed on October 13, 2026 displayed a March 31, 2026 Nightreign hotfix among the latest news. That listing is not proof that no later update exists. Check the live update notes for the version you are playing. Elden Ring’s multiplayer descriptions are official as well, but patches can alter mechanics and eligibility details.

Bottom line
Elden Ring multiplayer is an invitation into one player’s world: up to two co-op guests, bounded objectives, possible invasions, and asynchronous traces that make solo play feel connected. Nightreign is a separate expedition game: matchmaking, a structured run, host-influenced teammate rewards, and mode-specific systems such as Deep of Night ratings. Pick Elden Ring for targeted help inside a personal campaign; pick Nightreign for a multiplayer-first expedition loop. Pick neither if your requirement is a persistent MMO world with an uninterrupted shared campaign.
