Short answer: choose Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on Nintendo Switch 2 if handheld play and Nintendo hardware are important to you, or if you want the base game, Shadow of the Erdtree, and the new Tarnished Pack in one purchase. If you already own a PS5, Xbox, or suitable gaming PC, there is no evidence-based reason to buy another system solely for Elden Ring. What changed in 2026: Switch 2 has a released edition
FromSoftware announced the Nintendo Switch 2 release on June 4, 2026, with a global launch date of August 28, 2026. Bandai Namco later confirmed that the game was available on that date. This is the first Nintendo-platform version of FromSoftware’s open-world action RPG.
The Switch 2 product is called Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition. Its product page labels it “Nintendo Switch 2 Only” and lists the base game, the Shadow of the Erdtree downloadable content, and the Tarnished Pack downloadable content. Bandai Namco describes playing in both docked and handheld modes, so the practical distinction is the ability to move the same campaign between a television and a portable system.

The four armor sets, two classes, and three Torrent appearances are additions to the existing game rather than a separate campaign. They are packaged with Tarnished Edition on Switch 2.
The new content is not exclusive to Switch 2
FromSoftware’s release announcement says the Tarnished Pack can also be purchased for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. Bandai Namco’s American launch announcement specifically names PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Because store catalogs can vary by country, check the official store for your region before purchasing.
This means Switch 2 is the all-in-one hardware-and-bundle option, not the only way to obtain the new classes, armor, and Torrent cosmetics.

Which version should you buy?
Choose Switch 2 when handheld play changes how you will play
Switch 2 is the clearest choice if you want to play Elden Ring away from a television. Bandai Namco explicitly presents Tarnished Edition as playable in handheld and docked modes. That gives you a portable option without giving up conventional television play.
Portability is a lifestyle and access advantage, not a confirmed technical advantage. The available official information does not say that Switch 2 has higher or lower resolution, a faster frame rate, shorter load times, or greater stability than PS5, Xbox, or PC. Buy it for the way you intend to use the system and for the bundled content, not for an unverified performance claim.
Stay on PS5 if you already own one
A PS5 owner can continue with the existing Elden Ring release and purchase the Tarnished Pack if the new classes, armor, and Torrent appearances are wanted. The publisher also lists editions that include Shadow of the Erdtree. There is no established reason in the reviewed material to purchase a Switch 2 only to access the game.

PS5 is especially straightforward for someone whose friends, accessories, account library, and living-room setup are already centered on PlayStation. Confirm the exact edition in the store before checkout so that the expansion is included if you do not already own it.

Xbox Series X|S is the practical choice for players already invested in Xbox. The publisher lists the base game and expansion editions, and the Tarnished Pack is available for the platform. Official 2024 product information describes Smart Delivery for the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One versions, allowing the console family to use the appropriate version when supported.
If you are moving between Xbox One and Xbox Series hardware, verify the current store listing and entitlements for the specific purchase. Smart Delivery information does not establish cross-play with other platforms or guarantee identical performance between consoles.
Choose PC if you already have a suitable gaming setup
Steam is a sensible home for players who already use a gaming PC and prefer mouse-and-keyboard options, controller flexibility, or a PC library. The official sources reviewed for this comparison do not establish current PC hardware requirements, tested frame rates, graphics presets, or stability results, so a PC recommendation should be based on your existing system and the current Steam listing rather than an assumed benchmark.

If you are new to Elden Ring
- Decide where you will play most often. Select Switch 2 for handheld-and-docked flexibility, or use the PS5, Xbox, or PC you already own.
- Look for an edition that explicitly includes the expansion. On Switch 2, Tarnished Edition lists the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree together. On other platforms, some listings bundle the expansion while others sell the base game alone.
- Check the Tarnished Pack line. The two classes, four armor sets, and three Torrent appearances are part of the Switch 2 bundle and are sold as Tarnished Pack content on the other listed platforms.
- Confirm your region’s store details. Retail stock, prices, and edition names can change. Buy Tarnished Edition on Switch 2 when portable play is a priority or when you want the Nintendo version’s complete bundle in one purchase.
