El Niño Watch: What the Forecast Says for the Week of October 12–18, 2026

El Niño is strengthening, but the official material available for the week of October 12–18, 2026, does not verify a roundup of weather impacts caused by it. NOAA’s October 8 forecast favors strong-to-very-strong conditions into early 2027; the World Meteorological Organization’s regional outlook points to warmer-than-normal conditions across many land areas and differing rainfall prospects by region. Those are seasonal probabilities, not predictions for every place or day.

Is El Niño happening now?

Yes. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center said on October 8 that El Niño was continuing to strengthen. Its diagnostic discussion put the chance of strong-to-very-strong conditions through January–March 2027 at greater than 83%. The National Weather Service’s current ENSO page separately reports an El Niño Advisory and a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during Northern Hemisphere fall and winter 2026–27. These figures come from different products and forecast windows, so they should not be combined into one probability.

The WMO’s August update, published September 3, said El Niño was firmly established as of mid-August and gave nearly 100% probability of persistence through September–November 2026 and December 2026–February 2027. It expected further strengthening, with very strong intensity before a late-year peak. NOAA’s October 8 diagnostic discussion, the National Weather Service ENSO summary, and the WMO August update describe their respective forecasts.

What does the outlook say about regions?

The WMO outlook covers August–October 2026. Its temperature and rainfall maps show likelihoods relative to local climatology. “Favored” or “more likely” means a probability signal, not a guarantee that a particular city will be hotter, wetter, or drier on a given date.

Region Temperature signal Rainfall signal
Greater Horn of Africa Above-normal temperatures favored across the broader African signal Wetter than normal favored
Southern Europe Above normal favored Wetter than normal favored
Arabian Peninsula Above normal favored No specific rainfall signal stated in the WMO summary
Indian subcontinent Above normal favored Drier than normal favored
Eastern Asia Above normal favored No specific rainfall signal stated in the WMO summary
Central America and the Caribbean Above normal favored Drier conditions favored in southern Central America and parts of the Caribbean
Western North America south of 45°N Above normal favored across the broader signal for the Americas Wetter than normal favored
Southern and eastern Australia No specific temperature signal stated in the WMO summary Drier than normal favored
Northwestern South America Above normal favored across much of South America Drier than normal favored
Southeastern South America Above normal favored across much of South America Wetter than normal favored
New Zealand Above normal favored No specific rainfall signal stated in the WMO summary
Northern Europe Above normal favored across the broader European signal Drier than normal favored
Southern Africa Above normal favored No specific rainfall signal stated in the WMO summary

The outlook also identifies wetter-than-normal conditions as more likely in parts of Central Asia. “No specific rainfall signal stated” means the WMO summary does not establish a direction for that region here; it should not be read as a forecast of normal rainfall. The WMO outlook and September 3 release provide the seasonal forecast context.

What impacts are expected this week?

The available official sources do not confirm which El Niño-related impacts occurred during October 12–18. The WMO outlook is seasonal, not a daily or weekly forecast, and NOAA’s October 8 discussion reports event status and prospects rather than a verified list of global impacts. It would therefore be misleading to say that a particular heatwave, storm, flood, drought, fire, or marine change this week was caused by El Niño on the basis of these forecasts alone.

El Niño can alter the odds of regional weather patterns, but a seasonal outlook cannot establish the cause of a specific event. Event attribution requires separate evidence about the event and the influence of climate drivers. The WMO also cautions that “the strength of an El Niño event does not translate directly into the magnitude of impacts in any region.”

How El Niño changes weather patterns

El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). It involves warmer-than-average surface water in the central and eastern tropical Pacific together with a change in the atmosphere: trade winds weaken and tropical rainfall shifts eastward. This coupled ocean-and-atmosphere pattern can alter circulation far beyond the Pacific, influencing temperature, rainfall, storms, agriculture, wildfire risk, and marine fisheries.

Past El Niño events often bring wetter conditions to parts of the southern United States and to Peru, Chile, and Ecuador, while raising drought risk in Australia, Indonesia, and parts of southern Asia. They can also shift fish and other marine species around northern South America. These are typical patterns, not guarantees for this event; the current WMO seasonal outlook is the more relevant guide for the regions and period it covers. NOAA explains the mechanism and typical regional effects in its El Niño and ENSO overview.

How to read the forecast without overreading it

  • Keep the time window in view. The WMO regional outlook describes August–October seasonal averages, not the precise weather expected on October 12–18.
  • Read “favored” as a probability. A regional signal shifts the odds relative to local climate norms; it does not promise the same conditions everywhere within a large region.
  • Separate forecast from attribution. A forecast of increased drought or flood likelihood does not prove El Niño caused a specific drought or flood.
  • Keep forecast probabilities attached to their source and period. NOAA’s greater-than-83% figure, the National Weather Service’s greater-than-90% figure, and WMO’s nearly 100% persistence estimate describe different forecasts.

WMO does not use “super El Niño” as an official operational category. Its classifications are weak, moderate, strong, and very strong; WMO says the term “super El Niño” is not part of its classification system and is not used in official products.
