El Niño and La Niña are opposite phases of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a coupled ocean–atmosphere pattern in the tropical Pacific. El Niño features unusually warm central and east-central equatorial Pacific water, weaker trade winds and an eastward shift of tropical rainfall. La Niña features unusually cool water, stronger trade winds and rainfall concentrated farther west near Indonesia and the western Pacific.
Those tropical changes can shift storm tracks, seasonal temperatures, rainfall and hurricane probabilities around the world. They change the odds of particular patterns rather than guaranteeing a specific result in every country or season.

El Niño and La Niña at a glance
NOAA describes ENSO as a recurring climate cycle involving sea-surface temperatures, tropical rainfall, air pressure and atmospheric circulation. El Niño and La Niña are its opposite warm and cool phases. The ocean and atmosphere reinforce one another: a temperature change alters winds and rainfall, and those winds and rainfall changes feed back on the Pacific Ocean.

| Feature | El Niño | La Niña |
|---|---|---|
| ENSO phase | Warm phase | Cool phase |
| Equatorial Pacific water | Above-average temperatures in the central and east-central tropical Pacific | Below-average temperatures in the central and east-central tropical Pacific |
| Trade winds | Weaker-than-average easterly trade winds | Stronger-than-average easterly trade winds |
| Tropical rainfall | Convection and rainfall shift toward the central and eastern Pacific; rainfall is suppressed over Indonesia and the western Pacific | Convection and rainfall increase over Indonesia and the western Pacific and are suppressed over the central and eastern Pacific |
| Typical duration | About 9–12 months | About 1–3 years |
| Typical hurricane relationship | More eastern Pacific hurricanes and fewer Atlantic hurricanes | Fewer eastern Pacific hurricanes and more Atlantic hurricanes |
These are broad, recurring tendencies, not guarantees for a particular event. The same ENSO phase can produce different local outcomes because the strength, location and timing of the ocean anomaly vary, and other climate patterns can reinforce or counteract it.

What is El Niño?
During El Niño, the central and east-central equatorial Pacific becomes warmer than average. Weaker easterly trade winds allow warm surface water to spread eastward. The main zone of rising air, clouds and tropical rain—called convection—also shifts eastward from its usual position near Indonesia.
The altered convection changes pressure and winds across the tropics. Those atmospheric changes can travel far beyond the Pacific through large-scale circulation patterns, affecting the probability of wet, dry, warm or cool seasons in distant regions.
How El Niño develops
- Warm water builds in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. Sea-surface temperatures rise above the seasonal average.
- Trade winds weaken. Reduced easterly winds allow the western Pacific warm pool to spread east and reduce the usual westward push of surface water.
- Rainfall follows the warm water. Deep convection and heavy tropical rain become more common over the central and eastern Pacific, while Indonesia and parts of the western Pacific tend to become drier.
- Atmospheric circulation adjusts. Changes in tropical heating alter pressure patterns, jet streams and storm tracks, producing remote seasonal effects.
What is La Niña?
La Niña is the cool ENSO phase. Central and east-central equatorial Pacific waters become cooler than average, and stronger easterly trade winds push warm surface water toward the western Pacific. The warm pool and the main zone of tropical convection remain farther west than normal.
Enhanced rainfall over Indonesia and the western Pacific and reduced rainfall over the central and eastern Pacific create a different tropical heating pattern from El Niño. That reversal changes atmospheric circulation and the odds of weather extremes in many regions.
How La Niña develops
- Cool water strengthens in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. Ocean temperatures fall below the seasonal average.
- Easterly trade winds intensify. Stronger winds maintain the westward movement of warm surface water.
- Convection remains concentrated in the west. Indonesia and nearby areas tend to receive more tropical rainfall, while the central and eastern Pacific see less.
- Remote circulation patterns shift. The resulting pressure and wind changes alter storm tracks and seasonal probabilities around the globe.
Why ocean temperature alone does not define ENSO
It is common to describe El Niño as “warm water” and La Niña as “cold water,” but ENSO is not simply a temperature reading. NOAA treats it as a coupled pattern: ocean temperatures, trade winds, tropical rainfall, pressure and atmospheric circulation must evolve together.
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center uses an operational sea-surface-temperature criterion for declaring an El Niño episode: the three-month average temperature departure must exceed 0.5°C in the east-central equatorial Pacific region from 5°N to 5°S and 170°W to 120°W. This is an agency monitoring threshold, not a statement about the temperature or weather in a particular town.

Frequency
NOAA says ENSO episodes typically occur every three to five years, although historical intervals have ranged from two to seven years. The cycle is irregular: one phase can be followed by a neutral season, the opposite phase or another episode of the same type.
Seasonal timing
Both phases often begin developing between March and June, reach their greatest strength between December and April, and weaken between May and July. This seasonal rhythm reflects changes in the tropical Pacific’s background conditions and in the atmosphere’s response.
How long each phase lasts
- El Niño: typically about nine to 12 months. Prolonged El Niño episodes have lasted two years and, in some cases, three to four years.
- La Niña: typically about one to three years, making it more likely than El Niño to persist across multiple winters.
“Typical” describes the historical tendency, not a fixed schedule. A developing event can strengthen, stall or fade earlier than expected.
How ENSO effects travel around the world
The physical chain is easier to understand in order:
- Pacific ocean anomaly: central and east-central equatorial Pacific waters become unusually warm or cool.
- Changed tropical convection: the location and intensity of heavy tropical rainfall shifts.
- Pressure and circulation response: rising and sinking air redistribute pressure and alter tropical and subtropical winds.
- Storm-track changes: jet streams and weather systems are steered along different paths or gain different amounts of energy.
- Regional probability shifts: distant areas experience a higher or lower chance of seasonal wetness, dryness, warmth, cold or storms.
NOAA summarizes the reach of this process by noting that Pacific temperature changes affect tropical rainfall “from Indonesia to the west coast of South America,” a distance covering roughly half the circumference of the globe, and that those rainfall changes affect weather patterns worldwide.

Effects in the Pacific and nearby regions
Central and eastern equatorial Pacific
El Niño usually brings warmer surface water, more convection and increased rainfall to the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. La Niña produces the opposite arrangement: cooler water and suppressed convection and rainfall in those areas.
Indonesia and the western Pacific
El Niño tends to displace rainfall away from Indonesia and the western Pacific, increasing the risk of drier conditions there. La Niña tends to keep the warm pool and convection farther west, favoring wetter conditions in Indonesia and surrounding parts of the western Pacific.
West coast of South America
Because the rainfall pattern can extend from Indonesia to the west coast of South America, El Niño and La Niña can influence seasonal rain and storm patterns along that coast. The exact result depends on the event and local geography; ENSO does not guarantee a particular amount of rain in any one location.
Hurricane effects
ENSO changes vertical wind shear—the difference in wind speed or direction between lower and upper parts of the atmosphere. Wind shear can disrupt or support the organized thunderstorms needed for tropical cyclones.
| Ocean basin | El Niño tendency | La Niña tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern Pacific | More favorable conditions for hurricanes; lower vertical wind shear is more likely | Less favorable conditions; higher shear is more likely |
| Atlantic | Fewer hurricanes on average because vertical wind shear tends to increase | More hurricanes on average because vertical wind shear tends to decrease |
These are seasonal tendencies, not a tool for assigning a specific storm to ENSO. Individual hurricanes also depend on sea-surface temperatures, moisture, atmospheric waves, wind shear and short-term weather conditions.
Why the same phase does not produce the same weather everywhere
ENSO is a global influence, not a global forecast. NOAA’s Physical Sciences Laboratory cautions that few regions show a consistent effect every year. Several factors explain the variation:

- Event strength: a weak temperature anomaly may produce subtle circulation changes, while a strong event is more likely to create a recognizable ENSO pattern.
- Location of the anomaly: warming centered farther east can affect the atmosphere differently from warming concentrated in the central Pacific.
- Season: ENSO teleconnections are often strongest in particular months and weaker in others.
- Other climate patterns: independent ocean, atmospheric and land-surface variations can reinforce or offset ENSO’s influence.
- Local geography: mountains, coastlines and regional weather systems determine how a broad circulation signal appears on the ground.
For this reason, a responsible forecast says that ENSO raises or lowers the odds of a pattern. It should not say that El Niño guarantees drought, floods, a mild winter or a particular hurricane season in a named location.

How NOAA monitors and forecasts ENSO
NOAA’s observing network combines satellite measurements, moored and drifting ocean buoys, sea-level analysis, ship and station observations and other data. These measurements track surface and subsurface temperature, winds, pressure, rainfall and ocean heat content.
Forecast models ingest those observations to estimate how the coupled ocean–atmosphere system may evolve. The Climate Prediction Center then issues diagnostic discussions and outlooks that describe the current phase, confidence and expected strength. Because ENSO forecasts change as new observations arrive, a dated discussion is more useful than an undated headline.
How to read an ENSO outlook
- Check the publication date and the forecast season being discussed.
- Look for the stated phase—El Niño, La Niña or neutral—and whether it is strengthening or weakening.
- Read the probability language. “Likely” describes odds, not certainty.
- Check whether the forecast describes a weak, moderate, strong or very strong event.
- Use regional seasonal outlooks for local planning; an ENSO statement alone is not a city-level forecast.
Current status: October 2026 snapshot
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center diagnostic discussion issued October 8, 2026, carried an El Niño Advisory. It reported that El Niño had strengthened further and that strong-to-very-strong conditions were likely through January–March 2027.
CPC said that an event of this magnitude makes impacts consistent with El Niño more likely, but not guaranteed. It also discussed the possibility of a historic-strength event, with probabilities varying by forecast season. This is a time-sensitive assessment: ocean observations and model guidance can change, so consult the latest CPC diagnostic discussion before making decisions based on the current phase.

For households
Use ENSO information as background for seasonal preparedness, not as a substitute for local weather alerts. A household in a region that often becomes wetter, drier, warmer or cooler during a particular phase can review flood, drought, heat, wildfire or storm plans, but should wait for local forecasts to determine specific actions.
Best Value
For agriculture and water management
ENSO can inform seasonal risk assessments for planting, irrigation, reservoirs and drought planning. The useful question is not “What weather will definitely occur?” but “How have the odds shifted for this season, and what decisions are sensitive to that shift?” Local precipitation outlooks and soil and water data remain essential.
For emergency management
Emergency planners can use ENSO as one input when evaluating seasonal exposure to heavy rain, drought, heat or tropical cyclones. Plans should include alternative scenarios because the same phase can produce different outcomes from one event to the next.
Common misconceptions
“El Niño means it will be warm everywhere.”
No. El Niño describes a tropical Pacific ocean–atmosphere state. It can increase the odds of warmth in some seasons and regions while favoring cooler conditions elsewhere.
“La Niña is simply the absence of El Niño.”
No. Neutral ENSO conditions are a third state. La Niña is an active cool phase with its own ocean, wind and rainfall pattern.
“A strong ENSO event guarantees strong local impacts.”
No. Strong events make consistent impacts more likely, according to CPC, but local weather still depends on the event’s structure, season, geography and other climate influences.
“ENSO causes every unusual weather event during its phase.”
No. ENSO shifts broad probabilities. It does not explain every storm, heat wave or dry spell, and it cannot by itself attribute a particular event.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- El Niño is the warm ENSO phase; La Niña is the cool phase.
- El Niño weakens trade winds and shifts tropical rainfall eastward; La Niña strengthens trade winds and keeps rainfall farther west.
- ENSO effects reach beyond the Pacific through changes in tropical convection and atmospheric circulation.
- El Niño typically lasts nine to 12 months; La Niña typically lasts one to three years.
- Episodes generally recur every three to five years, with historical intervals from two to seven years.
- El Niño tends to favor more eastern Pacific and fewer Atlantic hurricanes; La Niña tends toward the reverse.
- Regional outcomes are probabilities, not certainties, and current outlooks must be read with their publication date.
