Both involve changes in tropical Pacific sea-surface temperatures and the atmosphere above them. Those changes can shift seasonal climate odds far from the Pacific, but they do not determine the weather for a particular town or day.
What are the main differences between El Niño and La Niña?
ENSO is a coupled ocean–atmosphere climate pattern centered on the tropical Pacific. Its phases are identified not just by warmer or cooler water, but also by related changes in tropical rainfall, surface pressure, winds, and atmospheric circulation. When neither phase is present, conditions are described as ENSO-neutral.

| Feature | El Niño | La Niña |
|---|---|---|
| ENSO phase | Warm | Cool |
| Pacific signal | Periodic above-average sea-surface temperatures in the east-central equatorial Pacific | Periodic below-average sea-surface temperatures in the east-central equatorial Pacific |
| Typical atmospheric pattern | Warming shifts tropical rainfall and circulation; trade winds typically weaken | Broadly opposite oceanic and atmospheric tendencies, including cooler water and stronger easterly winds |
| Typical U.S. winter tendency | Wetter and cooler across much of the South; warmer and drier in the North | Drier in the South; colder and wetter in the Northwest |
| What the phase tells you | It changes the odds of seasonal conditions; it does not dictate local weather | It changes the odds of seasonal conditions; it does not dictate local weather |
El Niño occurs on average every two to seven years and typically lasts nine to twelve months, according to NOAA’s El Niño explainer. Individual events vary in strength and duration.
How can a Pacific climate pattern affect places far away?
The tropical Pacific is a large source of heat and moisture for the atmosphere. When ENSO changes where warm water and tropical rainfall are concentrated, it can alter atmospheric circulation and shift storm tracks. That can influence seasonal temperature and precipitation patterns across the world. NOAA describes effects on storms, agriculture, wildfire risk, and marine fisheries, as well as rainfall patterns.

For example, NOAA notes that El Niño can favor wetter conditions in the southern United States and drought risk in Australia, Indonesia, and parts of southern Asia. La Niña tends to favor drier conditions in the U.S. South and colder, wetter conditions in the Northwest. These are broad regional tendencies, not guarantees for every location or season. ENSO’s strongest Northern Hemisphere effects are usually felt in winter.
What does El Niño or La Niña mean for my area?
Without a location, the U.S. regional patterns above are examples rather than a local forecast. Even within a broad region, the outcome varies, and an ENSO phase cannot tell you whether a particular storm will occur or when rain will fall. For a location-specific seasonal probability, check the relevant official outlook rather than treating the phase label as a prediction.

Keep seasonal climate outlooks separate from day-to-day weather forecasts: an outlook describes the chances of conditions over a season, while a weather forecast addresses nearer-term conditions. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center publishes seasonal outlooks and updates its ENSO diagnostic monthly, alongside weekly monitoring of oceanic and atmospheric conditions.
What is the current ENSO outlook as of October 7, 2026?
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center issued an ENSO Diagnostic Discussion on September 10, 2026 reporting an El Niño Advisory and a strengthening event. CPC forecast a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño during Northern Hemisphere fall and winter 2026–27. The discussion said that impacts consistent with El Niño were more likely with an event of this magnitude, though not guaranteed.

- Allows you to monitor your home and backyard weather conditions with TFT color display
- Wireless all-in-one integrated sensor array measures wind speed/direction, temperature, humidity, rainfall, UV and solar radiation
- Supports both imperial and metric units of measure with calibration available
- Enhanced Wi-Fi connectability option that enables your station to transmit its data wirelessly to the world's largest personal weather station network

The CPC’s September 2026 probability outlook listed a 100% El Niño probability for the displayed overlapping three-month seasons from August–October 2026 through March–May 2027. Those probabilities are a dated outlook, not a permanent forecast; phase probability is not the probability of a specific local impact. CPC’s next diagnostic was scheduled for October 8, 2026, so it had not yet been issued as of October 7.

NOAA monitors ocean and atmospheric observations and combines them with model guidance to produce consensus outlooks. In 2026, NOAA made the Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) its operational monitoring index. RONI adjusts the traditional Niño-3.4 sea-surface temperature index by subtracting tropical-mean temperature departures, reducing dependence on the selected climatological base period.

- Personal Weather Forecast Station: This weather stations wireless indoor outdoor predicts the next 12-24 hours weather condition with a 7-day calibration through the pressure of your location which provides you a better outing experience.
- 5 Level Adjustable Backlight Brightness: The weather clock indoor outdoor temperature atomic with backlight dimmer function helps you avoid high-intensity light that disturb your sleep and easily check the weather situation during the day.
The September 2026 probabilities used RONI, a ±0.5°C threshold for the Niño-3.4 region, and the 1991–2020 climatological base period. These are technical details behind the forecast categories; they do not make a local seasonal outcome certain. A listed 0% in a probability outlook is approximate, not proof that an outcome is literally impossible.
