Before the game, RotoWire reported that Archield was warming up with Delaware’s starters; a later game log records him in the Blue Hens’ 30–14 loss.
Was EJ Archield starting against Liberty?
Not officially confirmed by the sources available. RotoWire’s October 2 pregame report said Archield was warming up with Delaware’s starters before the Week 5 game against Liberty, citing Feathers and Field Goals. That indicated he was in line for an opportunity, but warming up with the starters is not the same as a formal announcement that he would start.

RotoWire said Delaware starter Nick Minicucci was out Friday night with a leg injury and that the team was changing its backup quarterback after Braden Streeter went 2-of-16 with two interceptions against Virginia the previous week. Those details are RotoWire’s reported context, not an independently verified injury diagnosis or official depth-chart announcement. Read RotoWire’s pregame report.

What was known about Archield before the game?
Delaware listed Archield as a sophomore quarterback from Tampa, Florida. The university said he did not see game action in 2025, and its August 5, 2026 preseason quarterback preview described him as looking to make his collegiate debut. Delaware’s roster bio and preseason preview provide that background.
His university bio lists 2,448 passing yards and 19 passing touchdowns, plus 300 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns, for his high-school senior season. Those are high-school figures, not college production. The same profile did not list collegiate statistics when accessed.

Why the opportunity opened up
Minicucci’s reported absence and the change at backup quarterback put Archield in the pregame conversation. The scale of the quarterback role he was stepping into is illustrated by Delaware’s preseason preview: it credited Minicucci with 3,683 passing yards, 322 completions and 283.3 passing yards per game in 2025. Those are Minicucci’s prior-season numbers, not Archield’s.
Archield’s appearance against Liberty establishes that he saw game action in 2026; one appearance does not establish his role on Delaware’s depth chart going forward. The available sources do not provide an official announcement naming him the starter or clarify his longer-term standing.
