Egyptian onions have reached Vashi APMC and were reported at ₹38–40 per kg wholesale, compared with ₹45–50 per kg for Maharashtra onions. The figures come from local news reports published on October 1–2, 2026—not an official APMC price sheet—and apply to wholesale trading, not guaranteed retail prices. Reports also disagree on the shipment’s estimated weight: one put two containers at about 60 tonnes, another at about 50 tonnes.
What was reported at Vashi APMC?
Hindustan Times reported that two containers of Egyptian onions had arrived at Vashi APMC. It estimated their combined weight at around 60 tonnes. ESakal separately reported around 50 tonnes for two containers. Neither estimate is confirmed by an official market or port record in the available reporting, so the shipment’s precise tonnage is unsettled.

The Hindustan Times account quoted wholesale prices of ₹38–40 per kg for Egyptian onions and ₹45–50 per kg for Maharashtra onions. The price gap was reported amid tighter availability of stored summer onions and fewer arrivals at the market. Hindustan Times said daily vehicle arrivals at Vashi APMC had fallen to around 60–70 from nearly 100 earlier. The report attributed the pressure to dwindling stored stocks, rain damage to some stored onions, and Maharashtra supplies being drawn to Delhi and southern states. These are explanations reported from market participants, not independently verified causal findings.

Lower reported wholesale prices may also reflect differences in the produce and the buyers it serves. Hindustan Times described Egyptian onions as firm and uniform, with a longer shelf life, while noting that Indian onions are valued for a sharper, more pungent flavour. Free Press Journal likewise reported hotel demand for the imports and household preference for Indian onions because of quality differences. Who is buying the imported onions?
Traders told Hindustan Times that hotels and other bulk users were the main customers, with relatively little of the imported produce going to retail. Trader Rahul Shelke said: “The first two containers have come to the market. This produce mainly goes to the hotel line, where the demand is higher. Very little of it goes to retail.”

The report quoted a trader estimate that around 80% of the consignment was bought by hotels in Mumbai and its suburbs. That percentage is a reported estimate, not a published sales tally. For commercial kitchens, longer shelf life and bulk availability may matter; a household shopper choosing between varieties may weigh flavour, grade, and their own assessment of quality instead.

Could more imports bring Maharashtra onion prices down?
Traders said additional imports could add supply and put downward pressure on Maharashtra onion prices. Prakash Sawant, a trader quoted by Hindustan Times, said around 400 further containers could be expected. That is a forecast, not confirmation that those containers have arrived at Vashi APMC. The same report linked concern about future imports to growers’ worries that cheaper supplies could weaken local prices.

Grower Mangesh Patil told Hindustan Times: “If Egyptian onions are sold cheaper, our local farmers will suffer,” Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana president Raju Shetti said: “If these onions enter the market, prices will crash again, wiping out the gains farmers have just begun to make,” These are the views of interested market participants; the eventual effect on prices and growers is not established by the reports.
The available accounts do not confirm the forecast container count or provide an official shipment record, APMC price series, or government data showing what happened to prices after the arrival. The reports are a snapshot from October 1–2, 2026, and wholesale onion prices and arrivals can change quickly.

What the reported price gap means for buyers
- For hotels and bulk kitchens: The quoted Egyptian wholesale range was lower, and traders said commercial buyers were the principal customers. Actual offers depend on grade, availability, and the buyer’s transaction.
- For household shoppers: The reported ₹38–40/kg figure is not a retail quote. The articles report limited retail movement of the imports and describe Indian onions as preferred by some consumers for pungency.
- For growers: Traders forecast that additional imports could add supply, while grower representatives expressed concern about downward price pressure. Neither a price fall nor its scale is confirmed.
