Eero Pro 6E Review: Who Should Buy This Wi-Fi 6E Mesh System?

The eero Pro 6E is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E mesh router best suited to people who want straightforward app-managed coverage and can make use of 6 GHz—either with compatible devices or as a wireless link between eero nodes. Its main compromises are more practical than headline-grabbing: each unit has only two Ethernet ports, 6 GHz loses strength through walls and floors, and some advanced features require a subscription. It is worth considering when easy mesh expansion matters more than extensive wired connectivity or deep network controls.

What the eero Pro 6E is—and what its ratings mean

The Pro 6E is a mesh Wi-Fi device with 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz radios. It can serve as the gateway connected to a modem or as an additional mesh node. eero’s current comparison lists up to 2,000 square feet of coverage per device, support for 75+ devices, and maximum speeds of up to 1 Gbps wired and up to 1.3 Gbps wireless. These are manufacturer ratings, not guarantees for a particular home, device mix, internet plan, or building layout. eero’s specifications and comparison provide the current product figures.

eero announced up to 2.3 Gbps of “combined network capacity” at launch in 2022, describing it as up to 1 Gbps wired plus up to 1.3 Gbps wireless. That combined figure is not the expected speed of one client connection. The launch announcement also rated one unit for up to 2,000 square feet, two for 4,000, and three for 6,000; the same announcement said 100+ devices, while the current comparison lists 75+. Treat the earlier device count as a dated launch claim, not the current rating. The launch announcement explains its original figures.

Does Wi-Fi 6E make a difference?

Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 with access to the 6 GHz spectrum, as eero explains in its Wi-Fi 6E support article. A device needs Wi-Fi 6E hardware to connect directly on 6 GHz. Older phones, laptops, and smart-home devices continue using the bands their own hardware supports; buying this router does not upgrade them to 6 GHz.

The extra band can still be useful in a mesh setup: eero says 6 GHz may be used for wireless backhaul, the connection between eero nodes. That can benefit a network even when some client devices are not 6E-capable, but the actual benefit depends on placement and the path between nodes. The band’s higher-frequency signal is less forgiving of obstacles than lower-frequency Wi-Fi. Do not assume the product’s overall coverage rating means 6 GHz will reach equally well through every wall or floor.

Coverage and real-world performance

Independent findings offer context, not a promise for your floor plan. RTINGS says it purchased and tested a two-pack in mesh and standalone modes; its test-bench page shows an update on June 22, 2026. It describes the Pro 6E as suitable for apartments, condos, and smaller homes, while also discussing medium-to-large homes when additional access points are used. RTINGS lists speed and coverage among its strengths, and wireless competitive-gaming latency among its drawbacks. Its results should be read as that publication’s assessment under its test conditions, not a guarantee for a specific home. See RTINGS’ eero Pro 6E review and test details.

In a 2023 review, WIRED reported that a two-pack covered its 1,600-square-foot, two-story test home, including the driveway and backyard. The reviewer also found that 6 GHz performance dropped quickly when a wall or floor intervened. In one test transferring a file between PCs attached to different mesh nodes, WIRED reported a 2.2 GB transfer time of 1 minute 14 seconds. That is a single publication’s result in its setup, not a speed estimate for ordinary internet use. WIRED rated the router 7/10 in that April 2023 review. Read WIRED’s review and test observations.

For planning, think about where the nodes can sit and what lies between them, not just the home’s square footage. If a 6 GHz client or the wireless node-to-node link must pass through several floors or dense walls, placement and the other available bands matter. Where Ethernet cabling is already available, a wired backhaul is an option; cabling itself does not increase the router’s radio coverage.

Ports, setup, and compatibility

Each Pro 6E has two Ethernet ports. RTINGS identifies them as one 2.5 Gbps port and one 1 Gbps port; eero’s current comparison lists two ports and up to 1 Gbps wired speed. The port count is the immediate constraint if you need multiple wired devices, a wired backhaul, or other network equipment connected at the gateway. An Ethernet switch can add ports for that use, but it is an extra piece of equipment rather than a Wi-Fi coverage upgrade. RTINGS’ review details the port configuration and notes the switch consideration.

  1. Connect one eero Pro 6E to the modem and designate it as the gateway in the eero app.
  2. Place additional eero nodes where they can reach the gateway or another node; connect them wirelessly or by Ethernet where cabling is available.
  3. Check the client device specifications if you expect it to use 6 GHz directly. A device without Wi-Fi 6E will use its supported bands instead.
  4. If older Wi-Fi 5 or earlier devices have trouble joining a WPA3-enabled network, consult eero’s current support instructions before changing the network’s security settings.

eero allows different generations to be mixed, but its product FAQ says, “For optimal performance, eero recommends using the same generation eero devices across your network.” Check the product page FAQ before expanding an existing system, particularly if your current nodes are older.

Subscriptions and ongoing cost

Basic mesh connectivity is distinct from optional subscription features. RTINGS describes paid extras including ad blocking, content filters, and VPN; WIRED’s 2023 review also discussed advanced security and management features and criticized the subscription cost. Feature bundles and prices can change by market and over time, so check the current eero Plus plan details and local price before treating any particular feature as included. RTINGS’ review and WIRED’s 2023 account describe the subscription context they reviewed.

Model Wi-Fi generation and bands What to weigh
eero Pro 6E Wi-Fi 6E; tri-band 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz Consider if you have 6E clients or want 6 GHz available for mesh backhaul. It has two Ethernet ports; check eero’s current table for exact specifications and price.
eero Pro 6 Wi-Fi 6; tri-band A prior-generation option to compare if 6 GHz is not a requirement. Verify current local price and specifications in eero’s comparison.
eero 7 Wi-Fi 7; dual-band A newer-generation alternative, but dual-band rather than tri-band. Compare its exact port configuration, coverage needs, and local price against the Pro 6E.
eero Pro 7 See current manufacturer comparison RTINGS includes it among newer Pro models; consult current eero specifications and local pricing before comparing.

This is a use-case comparison rather than a value ranking: exact prices, configurations, and availability are not fixed across markets or dates. Compare the number of nodes required, bands and client compatibility, Ethernet port quantity and speeds, subscription needs, and total local cost.

Who should buy the eero Pro 6E?

It makes sense if

  • You want an app-managed mesh system that is straightforward to expand.
  • You have Wi-Fi 6E devices, or a plausible need for 6 GHz wireless backhaul between nodes.
  • Your coverage needs fit a carefully placed one- or multi-node setup, and you accept that walls and floors affect results.
  • You need only a small number of wired connections at the gateway, or are willing to use a switch.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need many Ethernet connections directly on the router and do not want to add a switch.
  • Your main aim is better Wi-Fi for older clients that cannot use 6 GHz; those devices will remain on the bands they support.
  • You require consistently low wireless latency for competitive gaming; RTINGS identifies wireless competitive-gaming latency as a drawback.
  • You do not want subscription-dependent security or management extras and those features are central to your decision.

Verdict

The eero Pro 6E is a sensible mesh choice when simple expansion and access to 6 GHz are priorities, especially for 6E clients or inter-node backhaul. Its case is weaker for wired-device-heavy setups, homes where 6 GHz must travel through several obstacles, or buyers who would pay for subscription extras they do not need. Check current eero specifications, plan terms, and local pricing against alternatives before choosing a pack size.
