Eero 6+ Review: What It Does Well—and What to Check Before Buying

The eero 6+ is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 mesh router with two gigabit Ethernet ports, 5 GHz support for 160 MHz channels, and built-in Thread and Zigbee radios. It can serve as a primary router or join an existing eero network. Its headline coverage, device-capacity, and speed figures are eero’s own claims—not independent test results—so whether it is a good fit depends on your home, devices, internet plan, and willingness to use the eero app.

What is the eero 6+?

The eero 6+ (model R010001) is a dual-band mesh Wi-Fi 6 router. It can be the gateway connected to your modem, or an access point in an existing eero network. It supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), uses concurrent 2×2 radios, and supports 160 MHz channels on 5 GHz. It is backward compatible with older Wi-Fi standards, so older devices can still connect using the standards they support. eero’s support page and product page list these specifications.

The 6+ is dual-band, not tri-band, and does not have a 6 GHz band. eero’s comparison page lists 6E models with 6 GHz support; the 6+ is the option to consider if Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4 and 5 GHz meets your needs. Compare eero models for the current product lineup.

How fast is it, and how much coverage does eero claim?

eero’s product and support pages position the 6+ for gigabit-class internet and state speeds of up to 940 Mbps. The same pages claim up to 1,500 square feet of coverage per router and support for 75 or more connected devices. eero does not display a publication year for these figures on the pages cited here. They are manufacturer claims, not results from independent testing, and do not guarantee a particular speed or usable range in an individual home.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Your results depend on the internet service tier, client device, router placement, interference, and how the mesh is arranged. A Wi-Fi client’s own radio and connection conditions can limit its throughput even when the router and broadband plan are faster. Treat the square-footage and device figures as product positioning, not a precise sizing formula for a home with walls, multiple floors, or demanding workloads.

Which eero 6+ setup should you buy?

Use one 6+ as the main router

A single unit can connect to a modem and act as the gateway for an eero network. It has two auto-sensing Gigabit Ethernet ports, which can be assigned WAN and/or LAN roles. That is enough for a modem connection and one wired device in many setups, but households with more wired equipment may need a separate Ethernet switch.

Add an eero 6+ to an existing eero network

The 6+ can operate as an access point in an existing eero system. eero says it is compatible with existing eero hardware. However, mixing generations has a trade-off: eero says Wi-Fi 6 eeros do not use Wi-Fi 6 backhaul when meshing with Wi-Fi 5 eero models, which can affect speed and latency as clients roam between generations. eero’s Wi-Fi 6 explainer describes this limitation.

Use the 6+ Extender only to extend an eero network

The eero 6+ Extender is a separate wireless-only device. It has no Ethernet ports, cannot connect directly to a modem, and cannot work as a standalone router. eero claims that it can add up to 1,500 square feet of coverage. Choose it only when you already have a working eero network and want to extend it, rather than as a replacement for the router.

What do you need to set it up?

Setup and management require the eero app on a supported Android or iOS device. You also need internet service; a modem is required for cable, fiber, or DSL service where applicable. eero says the system works with most major internet providers, but compatibility depends on the provider and service at your address. Check the requirements for your specific plan and installation before buying. eero’s FAQ lists the setup requirements.

  1. Confirm your internet service and whether the installation requires a separate modem.
  2. Install the eero app on a supported iOS or Android device.
  3. Connect the 6+ to the modem or required network equipment and follow the app’s setup flow.
  4. Place any additional eero units where they can extend the network effectively; the app manages the eero system.

What smart-home features does it support?

The 6+ includes Thread and Zigbee radios, supports Matter-controller functionality, and works with Alexa. These capabilities may let it participate in a compatible smart-home setup, but they do not guarantee support for every device or feature. Check compatibility for the particular products you own, including which Matter, Thread, or Zigbee functions they require.

What are the main limitations?

  • Only two Ethernet ports: Both are gigabit and auto-sensing, but the port count may be restrictive if you connect several wired devices.
  • No 6 GHz band: The 6+ is dual-band Wi-Fi 6. If you specifically need Wi-Fi 6E and its 6 GHz band, compare eero’s 6E models.
  • Older devices do not become Wi-Fi 6 devices: They can connect using their supported Wi-Fi standards, but do not gain Wi-Fi 6 benefits.
  • WPA3 can affect compatibility: eero notes that some older devices may have trouble when WPA3 is enabled.
  • Mixed-generation mesh can change performance: When Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 eero models are meshed, eero says Wi-Fi 6 backhaul is not used between them, potentially affecting speed and latency during roaming.
  • App dependence: Setup and management require the eero app on supported mobile hardware.
  • Paid add-ons: eero offers an optional eero Plus subscription. Check current regional terms to see which security or parental-control features require it.

Is the eero 6+ worth buying?

The 6+ is a sensible candidate if you want an eero-compatible dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router, need gigabit Ethernet for the internet connection and one additional wired link, and are comfortable setting up and managing the network through an app. Its smart-home radios may also be useful if your devices are compatible.

Look elsewhere in the eero range if 6 GHz is a requirement, or compare other mesh systems if you need more Ethernet ports, do not want app-based management, or are choosing around a specific subscription or support requirement. Compare bands, wired-port count and speed, coverage for your actual layout, backhaul needs, ecosystem compatibility, app and account requirements, subscription-dependent features, and warranty terms.
