Edifier S1000W Review: Flexible Wireless Bookshelf Speakers—If You Have the Space

Verdict: The Edifier S1000W is a large, powered stereo bookshelf pair for listeners who want Wi-Fi streaming, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2 and conventional optical, coaxial and RCA inputs without buying a separate amplifier. Its strong bass, broad input selection and useful app make it versatile, but the cabinets need substantial shelf or stand space, there is no HDMI input, and a turntable without a built-in phono stage needs an external preamp.

This assessment combines Edifier’s current U.S. specifications with SoundGuys’ five-day review of a company-supplied pair. Sound observations below are that reviewer’s findings, not independent testing by Freedom251. See the official Edifier S1000W product page for the current regional listing.

What the S1000W is

The S1000W is an active stereo system: amplification is built into the speakers, so a separate integrated amplifier or power amp is not required. One cabinet contains the electronics and connects to the second cabinet to form a left-right pair. You provide a source over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, optical, coaxial or RCA.

That architecture suits a buyer replacing several boxes with one system. A network streamer, Bluetooth receiver, DAC and stereo amplifier are already integrated. It does not, however, make the pair a complete solution for every source. HDMI is absent, and the speakers do not include a phono preamp for a turntable cartridge signal.

The Australian CHOICE public record lists 40 × 34.7 × 28.1 cm and 16,400 g, which does not exactly match Edifier’s U.S. figures or SoundGuys’ measurements. CHOICE’s detailed test scores are restricted to members, so those database values should not be treated as a definitive replacement for the current regional specification.

Connections and streaming

Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2 and app control

Wi-Fi is the reason to choose the S1000W over a basic Bluetooth-only powered pair. SoundGuys found Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Alexa, Tidal and Spotify support useful during its review. Network playback can keep your phone available for other tasks and can integrate with compatible multi-room or voice-control routines, while AirPlay 2 provides a direct path from supported Apple devices.

Edifier’s Home app handles setup and input switching. SoundGuys tested app version 3.1.6 and firmware 4.6.430231; versions can change after an update. Give the speakers access to the same network used by your phone during setup, then use the app’s device-discovery and Wi-Fi prompts. If the speakers do not appear, confirm that the phone is not on a guest network or a different Wi-Fi band, temporarily disable VPN or client-isolation features, and retry discovery before changing router settings.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is the quickest option for a guest’s phone or a source that is not on your home network. Edifier’s current U.S. page identifies Bluetooth 5.2, while SoundGuys’ specification table identifies Bluetooth 5.0. That discrepancy may reflect a regional or revision difference. Check the label and documentation for the exact unit you are buying instead of assuming every S1000W has the same radio revision.

Optical, coaxial and RCA

The optical and coaxial digital inputs accept common TV, CD-player and streamer connections. Two RCA inputs cover line-level sources such as a phone’s analog adapter, a CD player with analog output or a preamp. The S1000W’s input selection can be changed in the app, and the remote supplied with the system can be used for everyday control.

TV use: optical works, HDMI does not exist

SoundGuys says the optical connection can work with most TVs, but the S1000W has no HDMI input. Optical can carry television audio when the TV provides an optical output, yet it does not offer HDMI-CEC volume and power coordination or the single-cable convenience of HDMI ARC/eARC. Buyers who want the speakers to behave like a soundbar should treat the missing HDMI port as a decisive limitation. Check that your TV has optical out and that its digital-audio setting can be switched to PCM if the speakers do not receive sound.

Placement: measure before ordering

These are not compact desktop speakers. SoundGuys measured the pair at 198 × 345 × 295 mm and 16.77 kg, while Edifier’s U.S. listing gives 7.6 × 13.6 × 11.6 inches. The approximately 11.6-inch depth is especially important on a shallow bookshelf. The cabinets also use rear bass-reflex ports, so they need breathing room behind them rather than being pushed flush against a wall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this placement check

  1. Measure the clear width, height and depth of each shelf or stand, not just the outside dimensions.
  2. Compare those measurements with roughly 13.6 inches of cabinet width, 7.6–7.8 inches of height and 11.6 inches of depth per speaker.
  3. Leave space behind each cabinet for the rear port and speaker cable; the exact clearance depends on your shelf and the amount of bass reinforcement you hear.
  4. Confirm that the supporting surface can carry 16.77 kg for the pair and remains stable when a speaker is placed near its edge.
  5. Position the left and right cabinets symmetrically where possible, with the tweeters near ear height at the main listening position.

If your furniture cannot meet those requirements, a smaller powered pair is a better physical fit even if it offers fewer streaming features. Do not buy the S1000W expecting to hide it in a narrow cubby.

How it sounds according to SoundGuys

SoundGuys tested a supplied pair for five days with firmware 4.6.430231 and Home app 3.1.6. The reviewer liked the connection options, bass response and app, but described the default control positions as emphasizing both bass and treble. That gives the S1000W an immediately lively presentation, though listeners seeking a flat or restrained balance may prefer adjustment.

Rear-panel bass and treble controls let you move away from the default tuning. They are useful because they can compensate for a bright room, a bass-heavy corner or recordings that already sound aggressive. Their position makes frequent changes inconvenient: you may need to reach behind a cabinet rather than adjust from the listening seat. Make a small change, listen from your normal position, and avoid judging the balance with your head close to the speaker.

The published 45 Hz–40 kHz response and power ratings are Edifier specifications, not a laboratory result from SoundGuys. They indicate the intended operating range and amplifier allocation but do not predict exact in-room bass, loudness or distortion. Room size, placement and the rear-port distance will have a large effect on what you hear.

Turntables and the phono-preamp question

The S1000W accepts line-level RCA input, not the very low-level signal produced directly by a conventional moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridge. It has no built-in phono preamp. A turntable is therefore compatible only when it has its own selectable phono/line stage, or when you insert an external phono preamp between the turntable and an RCA input.

Choose the correct connection

  • Turntable with a line/phone switch: set it to line and connect its RCA output to one of the S1000W’s RCA inputs.
  • Turntable labeled phono only: connect it to an outboard phono preamp, then connect the preamp’s line output to the speaker’s RCA input. Follow the preamp’s grounding instructions to avoid hum.
  • Unsure which output you have: check the turntable manual or rear-panel labeling. Do not assume that every RCA-equipped turntable outputs line level.

A separate preamp is not a general requirement for the S1000W; it is required only when the turntable itself does not provide the needed line-level conversion.

Adding a subwoofer

There is no dedicated wired subwoofer output and no low-pass filter in the S1000W. Edifier’s FAQ describes an optional arrangement using a self-powered subwoofer and an RCA Y-splitter. The splitter sends the same line-level signal to the speakers and the subwoofer.

Because the speakers continue playing bass when a subwoofer is connected, integration is less automatic than with a system that provides a managed sub-out. Set the subwoofer’s crossover and level conservatively, then adjust by ear from the listening position. A Y-splitter is relevant only for this optional setup; it is not needed for ordinary operation or for connecting a normal RCA source.

Alternatives mentioned by the review

SoundGuys points to the Kanto YU6, Klipsch The Fives and the smaller Edifier R1280T as alternatives. These are not controlled side-by-side results, and the cited review does not establish a universal winner. The useful distinction is how each option fits your source list and room.

Who should buy the S1000W?

It makes sense if you need

  • One stereo pair that accepts network streams, Bluetooth, optical, coaxial and analog RCA sources.
  • Built-in amplification without a separate receiver or integrated amp.
  • Strong bass and a lively default presentation, with rear controls for bass and treble adjustment.
  • AirPlay 2 or the Edifier app as part of your listening routine.
  • A conventional stereo setup rather than a soundbar-style HDMI system.

Choose something else if you need

  • HDMI ARC/eARC, CEC control or the simplest one-cable TV connection.
  • A built-in phono stage for a turntable that outputs phono level.
  • A managed subwoofer output with automatic bass filtering.
  • Small cabinets for a shallow shelf, narrow desk or lightweight wall shelf.
  • A neutral out-of-box balance with no need to reach behind the speakers for adjustments.

Setup and troubleshooting

No sound from a TV

  1. Confirm the TV’s optical cable is connected to the S1000W optical input and select that input on the speakers.
  2. Set the TV’s digital-audio output to PCM or stereo if bitstream audio is not recognized.
  3. Raise the TV’s output volume or disable a muted optical output, depending on the model.
  4. If you expected HDMI control, note that the S1000W has no HDMI input; use optical or choose a system designed for HDMI ARC/eARC.

Turntable hum or very quiet playback

  1. Check whether the turntable is set to phono or line.
  2. Use an external phono preamp when the turntable has no line output.
  3. Connect the preamp’s line output to the S1000W RCA input, and follow the grounding instructions for the turntable and preamp.

Wi-Fi setup fails

  1. Update the Edifier Home app and speaker firmware when prompted.
  2. Put the phone and speaker on the same home network, not a guest network that blocks device discovery.
  3. Temporarily turn off VPN or router client isolation and retry the in-app setup.
  4. Use Bluetooth or a wired input while diagnosing the network; this separates a Wi-Fi problem from a speaker or source problem.

Bass is excessive

  1. Move the cabinets farther from the rear wall or corner while preserving port clearance.
  2. Use the rear bass control to reduce the level in small increments.
  3. Recheck from the normal listening position after each change; a near-wall test can exaggerate low frequencies.

Price, availability and version checks

Edifier’s U.S. product page displayed $599.99 when the cited information was retrieved. SoundGuys also contains older $449-era and retailer references. Those figures are not a universal current price: country, tax, promotions, stock and product revision can change the amount. Verify the live price and availability in your market before ordering.

Check the regional Edifier page for the exact Bluetooth version and included software support. The current U.S. listing says Bluetooth 5.2, while SoundGuys recorded Bluetooth 5.0 in its specification table, so a retailer description copied from an older revision may not match a current unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final assessment

The S1000W is compelling when the buying brief is “one substantial stereo pair with network streaming and many inputs.” Its integrated amplification, Wi-Fi ecosystem, Bluetooth, optical, coaxial and dual-RCA connectivity cover more sources than a typical budget powered speaker, and SoundGuys found its bass response and app useful. The trade-offs are structural rather than hidden: the pair is deep and heavy, default tuning is bass- and treble-forward, rear controls are not convenient, HDMI is missing, and a turntable may need an external phono stage.

SoundGuys concluded, “If you have room to accommodate the Edifier S1000W, it supplies a satisfying sound for most listeners, alongside the flexibility of wireless compatibility.” That conclusion belongs to its five-day test of a supplied unit, but it captures the central decision: measure your furniture and inventory your sources first. If both fit, the S1000W can replace several components; if either fails, a smaller or HDMI-equipped alternative will be easier to live with.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
