Edifier R20BT Review: USB-C Desktop Speakers, Setup, Specs, and Trade-offs

The Edifier R20BT is a compact, active 2.0 desktop speaker system built around USB-C audio, Bluetooth 6.0 multipoint, and an analog AUX input. Edifier rates its two full-range drivers at 2.5 W RMS each (5 W total), adds a 4-pole headphone/headset jack, ambient lighting, three sound presets, and app-based customization. Those are manufacturer specifications; the available documentation does not include independent frequency-response, loudness, distortion, or listening measurements, so this review evaluates what the hardware and published figures establish rather than inventing a sound-quality verdict.

For the complete feature set, see the official global R20BT page and the R20BT User Manual V1.00.

What the Edifier R20BT is

The R20BT is an active stereo speaker system: amplification is built into the speakers, so you do not need a separate amplifier or receiver. The set contains one active speaker and one passive speaker, connected as a pair. Edifier’s Canadian listing identifies it as a 2.0 system with two drivers, while the global specification lists 2.5 W + 2.5 W RMS output.

Each enclosure uses a 2.75-inch (70 mm) full-range driver. The published frequency-response range is 73 Hz–20 kHz, and the listed signal-to-noise ratio is at least 85 dB(A). These are specifications supplied by Edifier, not measurements made under an independent test protocol. They describe the product on paper but do not, by themselves, establish how much bass, volume, detail, or distortion you will hear at your desk.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The product is designed for a computer or other nearby source. USB-C can carry both power and digital audio from a compatible computer, Bluetooth handles wireless playback, and AUX accepts an analog source. A 4-pole 3.5 mm communication port is provided for wired headphones or a headset with a microphone. Ambient lighting, touch controls, three sound effects, and app support make the R20BT more configurable than a bare two-speaker USB set.

The global figures are collected on Edifier’s product page, which you can verify at edifier.com/p/computer-speakers/r20bt.

What is included and how the active/passive layout works

The manual identifies one active speaker and one passive speaker in the box. The active cabinet contains the electronics, source controls, and connections; the passive cabinet is the second stereo channel. Place the two speakers on either side of your display and keep their front faces aimed consistently toward your listening position. The documentation does not specify a required separation distance, so use the space available on your desk without blocking the drivers or rear connections.

Because the system is active, a computer, phone, tablet, or other source can feed it directly. There is no requirement to purchase a separate power amplifier. Power comes through USB-C; when USB-C is connected to an external power adapter instead of a computer, the manual says AUX or Bluetooth can still be used as the active source.

Connections and source switching

USB-C: digital audio and power from a computer

Edifier says the attached USB cable carries both power and audio from a compatible computer. The R20BT User Manual lists Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11 as supporting USB audio streaming. Connect USB-C to the computer, select the R20BT as the operating system’s output device if it is not chosen automatically, and start playback. This arrangement avoids a separate analog cable and powers the speakers from the computer’s USB connection.

USB-C is a connector type, not a guarantee that every phone, tablet, hub, or charger will provide audio. If a device supplies power but does not expose USB audio, use Bluetooth or AUX instead. The manual’s external-power note is useful for a desk where the speakers should stay powered while a computer is disconnected: connect USB-C to a suitable power adapter, then choose Bluetooth or AUX.

Bluetooth 6.0 and two-device multipoint

The R20BT supports Bluetooth 6.0 and the SBC codec. Its multipoint function allows two devices to remain connected, which is useful when, for example, a computer and phone share one speaker pair. Multipoint does not mean both devices play at once; the current stream must be paused or stopped before the other device can take over.

Use the manual’s sequence for adding a second device:

  1. Pair and connect the first phone, tablet, or computer to the R20BT.
  2. Press and hold the source button for 1.5 seconds to enter Bluetooth pairing for the second device.
  3. Choose the R20BT in the second device’s Bluetooth settings and complete pairing.
  4. Reconnect the first device if necessary.
  5. Pause or stop playback on the currently streaming device before starting playback on the other one.

For stable operation, keep the source within 10 meters, leave other unwanted Bluetooth devices disconnected, and confirm that the speaker is actually in pairing mode. The manual recommends restarting or resetting when those checks do not resolve a connection problem.

AUX for analog sources

The AUX input accepts devices with AUX or RCA output, according to Edifier’s product page. This gives you a wired route for a monitor, audio interface, game system, older laptop, or another source that does not support USB audio or Bluetooth. Use the correct cable for the source’s output; the R20BT documentation establishes compatibility with AUX and RCA-output devices but does not specify an included cable for every connector combination.

Headphones and headsets

The 4-pole 3.5 mm communication port supports wired headphones with or without a microphone. Plugging headphones in mutes the speakers, and the speaker’s plus and minus controls adjust headphone volume. A compatible four-contact headset can provide microphone connectivity through the port, but the documentation does not claim that the R20BT itself contains a built-in microphone.

Recommended first-time setup

  1. Position the pair. Put the active and passive speakers on a stable desk surface with unobstructed front panels. Leave enough room to reach the source and volume controls.
  2. Choose power. For computer USB audio, connect the supplied USB cable to the computer. For a non-computer setup, connect USB-C to an external power adapter and plan to use Bluetooth or AUX.
  3. Select a source. Use the source control to choose USB, Bluetooth, or AUX. If the computer continues using its internal speakers, open its sound-output settings and select the R20BT.
  4. Set a safe starting level. Begin at a low volume, start playback, and raise the level gradually. The published 5 W rating does not predict a specific room-filling loudness.
  5. Configure optional features. Try the Classic, Dynamic, and Vocal presets, then use Edifier ConneX or TempoHub if you want app-based sound customization and supported lighting controls.
  6. Add a headset if needed. Insert a wired headphone or four-pole headset into the communication port; confirm that the speakers mute and adjust the headphone level with the plus/minus controls.

Controls, lighting, presets, and apps

Edifier’s R20BT/R19BT comparison identifies the R20BT as having touch controls, ambient lighting, multipoint Bluetooth, and app support. The product page lists three preset sound effects—Classic, Dynamic, and Vocal—and support for the Edifier ConneX and TempoHub apps. The available specifications establish that these features exist; they do not document every gesture, lighting pattern, app screen, or operating-system requirement. Consult the current manual and in-app instructions for the exact control action on your unit.

Presets should be treated as selectable processing modes rather than objective sound-quality rankings. If one mode is preferable for your content, that is a user preference; the published material does not provide independent measurements showing that one preset is more accurate or louder than another.

Desk fit, dimensions, and regional specification differences

Edifier publishes slightly different physical figures by market. The global page lists each speaker at 83 × 177.2 × 121.1 mm. Edifier Canada lists 83 × 173.2 × 121.2 mm per speaker. The difference is small but meaningful if you are checking a tightly measured shelf or monitor stand, so use the listing for the market where you will buy rather than combining the numbers.

The global page gives a 1.40 kg net weight. The Canadian listing describes approximately 1.40 kg as the weight of the pair. Because the labels are presented differently, treat 1.40 kg as a regional listing that needs context, not as a guaranteed per-speaker figure. The Canadian dimensions and weight wording are available on the Edifier Canada R20BT listing.

In practical terms, the R20BT is aimed at a compact desktop rather than a floor-standing or home-theater installation. Measure the width and depth available on both sides of your display, account for the cable path behind the active speaker, and check the relevant regional dimensions before ordering.

What the published audio numbers do—and do not—tell you

The combination of 5 W total RMS output, 70 mm full-range drivers, and a 73 Hz–20 kHz published response describes the design target. It does not establish a measured in-room response, maximum clean SPL, bass extension at a specified tolerance, stereo imaging, or distortion. Those results depend on enclosure tuning, placement, listening distance, source level, and measurement method, none of which are supplied in the available product documentation.

Accordingly, the R20BT can be evaluated confidently for connectivity, controls, physical format, and stated specifications. Claims that it has especially deep bass, unusually clear vocals, a particular sound signature, or enough output for a specific room would require listening tests or measurements that are not documented here. The same caution applies to the ≥85 dB(A) signal-to-noise figure: it is Edifier’s rating, not an independently verified noise-floor result.

R20BT versus Edifier R19BT

Edifier Japan’s official comparison provides a useful feature-level contrast. It does not establish which model sounds better, because it supplies no independent listening or acoustic measurements.

Do you need an external amplifier?

No. The R20BT is an active system with amplification built in, and Edifier explicitly presents it as requiring no external amplifier. Connect a source directly by USB-C, Bluetooth, or AUX. An external amplifier would not be the normal upgrade path for this product and could introduce an incompatible connection or unnecessary complexity.

The practical accessory question is instead which source cable or headset you need. A computer can use USB-C audio, a phone can use Bluetooth, an analog device can use AUX, and a wired four-pole headset can use the communication port. The right choice depends on the outputs your equipment already has.

Price and availability are market-specific

Prices in the official listings are snapshots, not a universal current price. Edifier Japan’s comparison shows a sale price of ¥7,980, while the Canadian store listing showed CAD $89.99 and “in stock” at the time it was crawled. Currency, taxes, promotions, shipping, and inventory can change. Check the store serving your country immediately before purchase rather than treating either figure as a worldwide price.

Troubleshooting common problems

No sound over USB-C

  • Confirm the cable is connected to the computer’s USB-C port and that the R20BT is selected as the operating system output.
  • Check that the speaker source is set to USB rather than Bluetooth or AUX.
  • Raise the computer’s output level and the speaker volume separately.
  • If the port supplies power but no audio device appears, use Bluetooth or AUX; not every USB-C port or adapter supports USB audio.

Bluetooth will not pair

  • Move the source within 10 meters.
  • Disconnect another device that may already be connected.
  • Hold the source button for 1.5 seconds to enter the second-device pairing procedure when using multipoint.
  • Forget an old R20BT entry on the source, restart Bluetooth, and try again.
  • If pairing still fails, restart or reset the speakers as directed in the manual.

The second Bluetooth device does not take over

Pause or stop playback on the first connected device before starting playback on the second. Multipoint keeps two devices connected but does not mix their audio streams.

Headphones do not mute the speakers

  • Push the 3.5 mm plug fully into the 4-pole communication port.
  • Use a standard wired headphone or compatible four-pole headset.
  • Check the speaker volume controls after insertion; the manual says headphone volume is adjusted with the plus and minus controls.

AUX playback is silent

  • Verify that the source device is outputting through its AUX or RCA connection.
  • Select AUX on the R20BT and check the source’s own volume control.
  • Try a known-good cable and confirm that left/right plugs are fully seated if the source uses RCA.

Who the R20BT suits—and who should look elsewhere

The R20BT suits a desk user who values several ways to connect: one-cable USB-C audio from a Windows computer, Bluetooth 6.0 with two-device switching, and an analog AUX fallback. It is also a logical fit if a headset jack, ambient lighting, touch controls, or app-based customization matters more than having a larger multi-driver system.

It is a less certain choice for anyone shopping primarily on independently verified acoustic performance, very high output, or deep low-frequency extension. The available documentation does not provide those measurements, and the 5 W RMS rating and 70 mm full-range drivers should not be converted into promises about a particular room or genre.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, verify three things: the regional dimensions fit your desk, your source has a compatible USB-C, Bluetooth, or AUX output, and the current local listing includes the price and availability you accept. Those checks address the practical variables the published material can establish.

Specification changes and the manual’s caveat

Edifier notes in the R20BT User Manual V1.00: “For the need of technical improvement and system upgrade, information and specifications contained herein may be slightly different from actual product.” The manual says the actual product prevails if there is a difference. That statement is why regional store pages and the unit’s own labeling should take precedence when a dimension, control behavior, or specification conflicts with an older listing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
