Edifier M60 Pair Review: Compact Desktop Stereo, Connections, Bass Limits, and Value

Verdict: The Edifier M60 is a genuine powered stereo pair for a computer desk, not a single Bluetooth speaker. Its small cabinets, angled stands, USB-C, Bluetooth 5.3 and AUX input make it unusually easy to place and connect. It is best at arm’s length or normal-to-lively desktop volume. If you need deep bass, clean room-filling output, optical input, a remote or a future subwoofer connection, choose a larger or more expandable system instead.

What the Edifier M60 is

The M60 is an active two-speaker system. Amplification, digital signal processing and the crossover are built into the speakers, so a separate stereo amplifier is not required. One cabinet is the left channel and the other is the right channel, giving you real stereo imaging rather than the merged presentation of a single portable speaker.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Edifier positions it as a compact desktop pair. Each cabinet contains a 3-inch long-throw aluminum mid-low driver and a 1-inch silk-dome tweeter. A built-in Class-D amplifier supplies the system’s published 66 W RMS total: 15 W per tweeter and 18 W per mid-low driver. Edifier also specifies a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 85 dB(A). These are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements. Edifier’s official M60 specification page does not state a tolerance for its frequency-response range, so the quoted 58 Hz–40 kHz figure should not be read as proof of flat, high-output bass down to 58 Hz.

Key specifications

Specification Edifier’s published information What it means in use
System type Active stereo pair with built-in Class-D amplification and DSP crossover Connect a source directly; no external amplifier is needed
Total rated power 66 W RMS (15 W × 2 tweeters, 18 W × 2 mid-low drivers) A rating for the electronics, not a guarantee of distortion-free output at every volume
Drivers 3-inch long-throw aluminum mid-low driver and 1-inch silk-dome tweeter per speaker Compact drivers favor desk placement over very deep bass or large-room output
Published frequency response 58 Hz–40 kHz; no tolerance stated on the product page Do not treat the lower endpoint as a flat, full-level bass specification
Inputs and wireless USB-C, 3.5 mm AUX, Bluetooth 5.3 Suitable for computers, phones and analog sources
Bluetooth codecs SBC and LDAC Codec choice depends on the transmitting device and operating system
LDAC capability Android 8.0 or later devices can stream up to 24-bit/96 kHz, according to Edifier Only compatible Android hardware and settings can use that mode
Size 100 × 168 × 147 mm per speaker About 10 cm wide and 16.8 cm tall, before allowing extra clearance for cables and stands
Net weight 3.07 kg for the set Light enough to reposition, but substantial enough to stay put on a desk
Finishes Black, white and classic oak shown by Edifier Finish availability can vary by region

Desk footprint, stands and placement

Space is the M60’s clearest physical advantage. Tom’s Guide describes the pair as roughly four inches wide and six-and-a-half inches tall, calling that size useful for compact setups. The exact metric dimensions from Edifier are 100 × 168 × 147 mm per speaker. Leave room behind each cabinet for the power and source cables, and keep the two speakers far enough apart that the left and right channels form a triangle with your listening position.

Angled metal stands are included. They raise and tilt the speakers toward the listener, which is helpful when the pair sits below ear level. MyHiFi notes that stand angle and ear height affect the vertical response: a listener who is much higher or lower than the tweeters can hear a different tonal balance. Start with the tweeters aimed approximately at ear level, then adjust the angle rather than assuming the flattest result comes from placing the cabinets completely level.

The stands are supplied in the box, along with a 3.5 mm cable, a USB-C-to-USB-C cable, a 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable and the user manual, according to Edifier. You do not need to buy an amplifier or duplicate stands. A different cable is only necessary when your source uses a connector not covered by the included leads.

Sound quality and bass: what the evidence supports

Nearfield character

Tom’s Guide reports punchy bass and strong overall sound for the M60’s dimensions, with the compact footprint, angled stands and touch controls as notable design features. Those are that reviewer’s listening impressions, not a universal result for every room, source or placement.

MyHiFi’s review concentrates on measured behavior and desktop listening. It reports small-signal bass extension around 67–70 Hz. That result is different from the 58 Hz lower endpoint in Edifier’s specification because the two numbers describe different conditions: one is a manufacturer-published range without a stated tolerance, while the other is an independent measurement at modest signal levels. MyHiFi also reports increasing compression and distortion as the small drivers are pushed toward high playback levels. In practical terms, the M60 can sound balanced and lively close to the desk, but the same tonal balance will not hold when you demand deep bass at room distance.

What the M60 cannot do

There is no subwoofer output. You cannot add a powered subwoofer through a dedicated expansion jack, so buyers who want a simple upgrade path for movie effects, electronic music or gaming bass should select a system designed for that connection. The small drivers also have limited air movement compared with larger bookshelf or studio monitors. Bass-heavy material at high volume is where the M60’s headroom runs out first; turning it up further can bring the compression and distortion described by MyHiFi rather than producing proportionally deeper bass.

Best listening distance

MyHiFi’s practical conclusion is that the M60 works well at arm’s length and at ordinary-to-lively desktop levels. That makes it a strong match for a workstation, bedroom desk, small office or close gaming setup. It is a poor fit when the primary goal is party-level playback across a large room. Use the M60 for a focused listening position, and choose larger monitors or a subwoofer-capable system when low-frequency impact and distance are priorities.

Connections, codecs and controls

USB-C for a computer

USB-C is the most direct wired connection for a modern computer. Connect the included USB-C-to-USB-C cable, select the M60 as the computer’s audio output, and play a test track. USB audio avoids Bluetooth compression and does not occupy the computer’s headphone jack. If your computer has only USB-A, use a compatible USB-A-to-USB-C data cable or adapter; the included cable is USB-C to USB-C.

Bluetooth 5.3

The M60 supports Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC and LDAC codecs. Edifier says Android 8.0-or-later devices can stream up to 24-bit/96 kHz over LDAC, provided the phone and its Bluetooth settings support that mode. Apple devices and other transmitters may use a different codec. Pair through the source device’s Bluetooth menu, then select the M60 for playback. Keep the phone or computer within normal Bluetooth range and avoid pairing it to another speaker when you are troubleshooting a silent connection.

3.5 mm AUX

The analog AUX input works with a computer headphone output, phone dongle or other line-level source. Edifier includes a 3.5 mm cable and a 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable, so the latter can connect a source with left/right RCA outputs. Set the source volume moderately high and use the speaker controls for final adjustment; extremely low source volume can make the system seem quieter than it is.

Missing connections and control hardware

Independent review material identifies two important omissions: there is no optical input and no subwoofer output. A television or game console with only optical audio will need a separate converter or a different speaker system. Tom’s Guide also notes that no remote is included. The speakers use touch controls, and that reviewer found cycling through source modes with the touch interface inconvenient. If you frequently change inputs from across the room, physical buttons or a remote may suit you better.

How to set up the M60 on a desk

  1. Position the pair. Place the left and right speakers on a stable surface with the tweeters aimed toward your ears. Use the included angled stands when the drivers sit below ear height. Keep the cabinets clear of monitor sides and do not block the cable exits.
  2. Connect power and the source. Use USB-C for a computer, Bluetooth for a wireless phone or laptop, or AUX for an analog output. The box includes basic cables for USB-C and 3.5 mm connections; check your source before buying anything else.
  3. Select the input. Use the speaker’s touch controls to choose the active source. Because source cycling can be inconvenient, pause playback on other devices while selecting the desired input.
  4. Set a safe starting level. Begin with the computer or phone around the middle of its range and raise the M60 gradually. If bass becomes blurred or harshness appears, reduce level rather than assuming more power will restore detail.
  5. Fine-tune the angle. Move the stands or adjust your listening height until vocals and central instruments lock between the speakers. MyHiFi’s observation about vertical response makes this step particularly important when the pair is under a monitor shelf.
  6. Check channel orientation. Play a left/right test track or a familiar recording. If the image is reversed, swap the speaker positions or correct the source’s channel-balance setting.

The complete user manual is available as a PDF from B&H Photo Video’s hosted copy of the Edifier M60 manual. Use it for the exact control sequence if the touch panel does not enter pairing or change inputs as expected.

How the M60 compares with larger alternatives

The right comparison depends on what you are willing to trade for desk space. MyHiFi places the M60 alongside several different kinds of speakers rather than declaring one universal winner.

Candidate Why it enters the comparison What the available information establishes
Edifier M60 Smallest-footprint focus, USB-C, newer Bluetooth and close-range stereo 100 × 168 × 147 mm per speaker; 66 W RMS rated total; no optical or subwoofer output
Edifier R1280DB Traditional bookshelf alternative MyHiFi notes optical connectivity and a larger bookshelf footprint; MyHiFi did not state other comparative specifications and current price
ADAM Audio D3V Compact monitor-oriented alternative Included by MyHiFi as a comparison candidate; MyHiFi did not state exact dimensions, inputs and price
Kali Audio LP-UNF Nearfield monitor alternative Included by MyHiFi as a comparison candidate; MyHiFi did not state exact dimensions, inputs and price
ELAC Debut ConneX DCB41 Another powered-speaker alternative Included by MyHiFi as a comparison candidate; MyHiFi did not state exact dimensions, inputs and price

Use the table as a shopping framework, not a ranking. The M60’s advantage is the combination of very little desk area, a real stereo pair and current computer-friendly inputs. A larger option can be preferable if optical connectivity, greater bass headroom or a different monitoring approach matters more than clearance around your display.

Strengths and limitations at a glance

Reasons to buy

  • Real powered left/right stereo without an external amplifier.
  • Compact 100 × 168 × 147 mm cabinets and supplied angled stands for crowded desks.
  • USB-C, Bluetooth 5.3 and 3.5 mm AUX cover modern computers, phones and analog sources.
  • LDAC support can provide up to 24-bit/96 kHz from compatible Android 8.0-or-later devices.
  • Touch controls and three finish options give the pair a clean desktop presentation.
  • Nearfield listening remains the design’s strongest use, with independent review evidence supporting ordinary-to-lively desk levels.

Reasons to pass

  • No subwoofer output, so bass expansion is not straightforward.
  • No optical input for sources such as televisions and consoles that lack analog or USB audio.
  • No included remote, and source cycling through touch controls may be awkward.
  • Small drivers cannot maintain deep bass and low distortion when pushed toward high output.
  • Edifier’s 58 Hz frequency-response endpoint has no published tolerance and should not be interpreted as guaranteed flat deep bass.

Buying decision

Buy the M60 if your listening position is close, desk space is scarce, and you want one pair to accept USB-C from a computer, Bluetooth from a phone and AUX from an older source. It is a sensible replacement for weak laptop speakers or a single portable speaker when stereo width matters.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Skip it for a large room, bass-first music, frequent high-volume playback, optical-only equipment or a planned subwoofer upgrade. In those cases, allocate more space and budget to a larger monitor or powered-speaker system with the required inputs and expansion connection. Check the regional price against those priorities: at roughly US$200 regular pricing, the M60’s value comes from its compactness and connectivity rather than from delivering the deepest bass in its class.

Common problems and practical fixes

No sound over USB-C

  • Confirm the M60 is selected as the computer’s output device rather than the built-in speakers or a headset.
  • Reseat the USB-C cable and verify that it is a data-capable cable; some USB-C cables carry power only.
  • Pause Bluetooth and AUX sources while testing USB to avoid listening to the wrong input.

Bluetooth pairs but playback is silent

  • Choose the M60 in the phone or computer’s active media-output menu after pairing.
  • Reduce the number of nearby devices attempting to connect, then retry pairing through the speaker controls.
  • If LDAC is unavailable, use the codec offered by the transmitter; LDAC requires compatible hardware and software.

Bass sounds weak or boomy

  • Move the speakers so neither cabinet is trapped against a wall corner or blocked by a monitor shelf.
  • Recheck stand angle and ear height; vertical positioning changes the tonal balance.
  • Lower the playback level if bass becomes compressed or distorted. That behavior is a limit of the small drivers, not something a different codec will solve.

Changing sources is frustrating

The touch interface is the only control method described by the independent review, which also criticizes source cycling. Stop playback on other devices, select one input deliberately and keep the manual nearby for the exact touch sequence. If you need remote source selection every day, choose a system with a supplied remote or more physical controls.

Final verdict

The Edifier M60 succeeds as a compact, modern desktop stereo pair. Its active design, true left/right separation, USB-C, Bluetooth 5.3 and AUX make everyday computer and phone use simple, while the included stands solve a common desk-placement problem. Independent evidence supports close listening at normal-to-lively levels, but also shows why the pair should not be bought as a deep-bass or room-filling system. Treat the published 58 Hz figure as a manufacturer range without a stated tolerance, account for the absent optical and subwoofer outputs, and the M60’s strengths and limits are clear.
