Edible Insects vs. Chicken, Beef and Plant Protein: Nutrition and Environmental Impact

There is no evidence-based universal winner. Edible insects can provide protein and micronutrients, and one life-cycle assessment found environmental advantages for a particular mealworm production system over several animal proteins on some measures. That does not show that every insect product is healthier or more sustainable than chicken, beef or plant-based protein. The comparison depends on the insect species and product, the food it is replacing, how nutrition is measured, and how each product is farmed and processed.

What counts as a fair comparison?

“Edible insects” covers many species and products, not one standardized food. Whole dried insects, cricket powder, defatted flour and protein isolates can differ in composition and preparation. Chicken breast, a fattier chicken cut, beef cuts, tofu, beans and formulated plant-based meat alternatives also differ from one another. A result for one product cannot automatically be applied to its entire category.

Comparison basis matters as much as the food name. A 100-gram serving of dried powder is not equivalent to 100 grams of cooked meat or cooked beans: water content changes how much protein appears in a given weight. A useful comparison specifies the actual product, its preparation and a realistic serving. For environmental impacts, it also identifies the production system and the processes included in the analysis.

There is no matched set of nutrition and life-cycle data here that ranks a defined insect product against defined chicken, beef and plant-based products. The available evidence supports useful comparisons of particular findings, not a single overall score.

When a comparison is being made for a meal, ask what role the food is meant to serve. Is it replacing a portion of meat, contributing protein as one ingredient in a mixed dish, or being compared as a packaged alternative? A powder blended into a food is not necessarily interchangeable with a whole food portion. The nutritional basis should reflect the actual question: a product-weight comparison may answer how much protein is in a given weight, while a protein-based functional unit can help compare production impacts for a nutritional purpose.

It also matters whether figures refer to the food as sold or as eaten. Drying, milling, defatting and other processing can change the product being measured. The comparison should state whether figures are for the raw ingredient, a prepared food or a formulated product, and avoid implying that a category-wide average describes every item on a shelf.

Nutrition: protein is only one part of the answer

Protein quantity and measurement

The FAO describes edible insects broadly as sources of protein, amino acids, vitamins, fatty acids and other micronutrients. That overview establishes that insects can contribute nutrients; it does not prove that a particular insect food contains more or better protein than a particular meat or plant food. The composition depends on species, life stage, processing and formulation.

Protein figures also need care because the method used to estimate them can overstate the amount of true protein in some insect products. Protein is sometimes inferred from a food’s nitrogen content. Chitin, a major component of the insect exoskeleton, contains nitrogen but is not protein, so it can inflate that estimate. EFSA explains this limitation in its 2021 overview of edible-insect evaluations. A large protein number on a label or in a study is not, by itself, proof of a correspondingly large amount of digestible protein.

EFSA food scientist Ermolaos Ververis, who coordinated the first adopted opinion on insects as novel food, described the challenge this way: “Insects are complex organisms, which makes characterising the composition of insect-derived food products a challenge.” The caution applies to broad statements about insect foods: the species and the formulation need to be known before a number can be interpreted.

For a practical comparison, use nutrition information for the actual product and serving. Check whether the figure is for a whole insect, flour, powder or isolate; whether it is measured or calculated; and whether the comparison uses the same preparation and weight basis for meat and plant foods. If those details are not available, the evidence does not justify a precise ranking.

Protein claims can also be presented on different bases. A label may report grams per serving, while a study may compare foods by dry weight or by protein delivered. These are not automatically interchangeable. If a powder’s serving is small, its concentration per 100 grams does not tell a reader how much the portion used in a meal contributes. Conversely, comparing cooked foods only by weight can obscure differences caused by moisture. A careful comparison names both the denominator and the product form.

Quality, digestibility and micronutrients

Protein quality is not captured by grams alone. Amino-acid composition and how much protein a person can digest and use also matter. The OECD’s 2022 report notes that insect protein digestibility varies by species and is generally lower than meat protein. That does not establish a ranking for every insect product versus every chicken or beef cut, and it is not a direct comparison with every plant protein.

This makes it important not to turn a general statement about insect protein into advice that a particular product is a one-for-one nutritional substitute. A comparison would need data for the specific insect and alternatives, measured using compatible methods. Where those data are absent, the defensible answer is that the precise protein-quality ranking is unknown, not that the foods are equivalent or that one category is categorically superior.

Micronutrients and fat profile are further reasons to compare specific foods rather than labels such as “insect” or “plant-based.” The FAO’s broad account of insect nutrients is not a matched nutrient table for a named species and serving. The evidence summarized here therefore cannot say that insects are categorically more nutritious than chicken, beef, tofu or beans. A product-level answer would require comparable composition data, serving sizes and, where relevant, information about digestibility.

“Healthier” is broader than protein content. A meaningful answer would have to specify which nutritional characteristics matter and compare actual products on the same basis. The broad nutrient description of insects does not establish that they are healthier overall, nor does the comparison establish that a formulated plant-based alternative is nutritionally identical to beans or tofu. Product formulation and preparation remain central to the question.

Environmental impact: what the mealworm study found

The clearest specific comparison is a life-cycle assessment by Oonincx and de Boer, published in 2012 and summarized in the FAO’s Edible insects: future prospects for food and feed security (2013). It examined a mealworm production chain and compared results using protein as the functional basis. For that studied system, greenhouse-gas emissions were much lower than for the conventional animal protein sources examined, and land use was lower. Energy use was lower than beef, comparable with pork, and slightly higher than chicken and milk. The original study is available from PLOS ONE; the FAO report is available as a PDF.

These findings are specific to the mealworm system and comparisons in that assessment. They are not current market-wide averages, do not cover every insect species or product, and do not establish that insects outperform plant-based protein. The energy result also shows why “more sustainable” can be too blunt: a food can have a favorable result for one impact category and a less favorable one for another.

The FAO’s general overview also says crickets need six times less feed than cattle, four times less than sheep, and twice less than pigs and broiler chickens to produce the same amount of protein. Treat this as a broad feed-conversion statement, not as a complete life-cycle comparison or a guarantee about every species, farm or feed source. Feed requirements alone do not account for every impact of producing, processing and storing food.

Feed conversion is only one piece of the accounting. It does not on its own say how much energy a production system uses, what land or other resources are required, or what happens during processing and storage. The mealworm assessment’s mixed energy result is a useful reminder that environmental performance is multidimensional. A favorable finding for greenhouse gases or land should be reported alongside other measured results rather than turned into a single all-purpose sustainability label.

The comparison also needs a clearly described functional unit. Results per kilogram of food answer a different question from results per quantity of protein. Nutritional units can make comparisons more relevant when foods are being considered as protein sources, but they do not remove the need to identify the actual foods and system boundaries. A result tied to one mealworm chain should remain tied to that chain whenever it is quoted.

Why insect-versus-plant claims are especially difficult

Being efficient compared with livestock does not establish that insects are more sustainable than plants. The plant alternative could be beans, tofu or a formulated meat substitute; the insect alternative could be whole insects, powder or another processed ingredient. Those choices can have different ingredients, serving roles and production processes. A meaningful comparison has to match the products and the nutritional function they provide.

Life-cycle assessments can also use different boundaries. One study may count only farm production, while another includes processing, storage and waste management. Results can change depending on the functional unit: comparing a kilogram of product is not the same as comparing the amount needed to deliver a given amount of protein or another nutritional function. Feed substrate is another important distinction, including whether production uses waste feed or non-waste feed.

A 2016 review of insect-food life-cycle assessments found the literature available to it was small and heterogeneous. It recommended identifying the species and life stage, collecting empirical farm data, choosing realistic alternatives, including relevant processes and using multiple functional units and impact categories. A 2022 systematic review likewise found relatively few environmental studies of insect foods in its included literature and distinguished production using waste feed from production using non-waste feed. These reviews explain why one favorable mealworm result cannot settle the broader comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The feed substrate distinction matters because a study of production using waste feed is not automatically comparable to one using non-waste feed. The farm data and the chosen boundary need to make clear what inputs are counted. Nor should the term “plant-based” be treated as one fixed comparator: a basic plant food and a processed alternative are different products, and a fair analysis needs to identify which one is under discussion.

For a fair environmental comparison, look for greenhouse-gas emissions and land use alongside energy and water use, resource use, nutrient enrichment and acidification where data are available. The systems should use comparable boundaries and a nutritional unit suited to the question. The available evidence does not establish one fair ranking of insects against a defined plant-based food.

These are not merely technical details. If a study compares a farm-gate insect ingredient with a finished packaged alternative, or counts storage for one product but not the other, the outputs may not answer a like-for-like consumer question. A strong comparison should state what is included and be cautious when the systems differ. Where boundaries or functional units are incompatible, the results should not be combined into a simple ranking.

How to compare products you are considering

  1. Name the foods precisely. Identify the insect species and whether the food is whole, dried, powdered, defatted or formulated. Name the chicken or beef cut and preparation, or the particular plant food or product.
  2. Put nutrition on a comparable basis. Compare realistic servings and preparation states rather than putting dry insect powder beside cooked meat or legumes by weight alone. Note how protein was estimated, and treat nitrogen-based insect protein figures cautiously because chitin can affect them.
  3. Look beyond total protein. Consider amino-acid quality, digestibility, relevant micronutrients and fat profile. Do not assume a general claim about insects applies to a particular product; digestibility varies by species.
  4. Check the environmental study’s scope. Look for species, life stage, location, feed substrate and processing, as well as whether the analysis includes storage and waste management. Check whether the comparison uses a product-weight or nutritional functional unit.
  5. Compare more than one impact. Review climate and land results alongside energy, water and other reported impacts. Avoid calling a product the winner based on one measure alone.
  6. Read the actual package for allergens. Check the ingredient list and allergen information for the product and jurisdiction where it is sold, particularly if you have a known allergy.

When reading a nutrition panel or study, keep the comparisons paired: the same serving basis for the foods, the same distinction between dry and prepared products, and a clear account of whether values are measured or estimated. If only a headline protein number is available for one food, but a matched digestibility measure is not, treat that as a limitation rather than filling in the gap with assumptions.

For environmental claims, note the date and scope of the assessment as well as the impact categories it reports. A published assessment describes a particular production chain at the time and under the conditions studied. It is evidence about that case, not automatically a current average for products sold today. If the study does not specify a relevant impact or include comparable alternatives, it cannot answer that part of the comparison.

Safety, allergies and labeling

Insect foods are not automatically unsafe, but neither does an assessment of one species or use establish the safety of every insect product. EFSA says potential biological and chemical hazards can depend on production methods, feed substrate, harvest stage, species and later processing. It has also noted limited data on transfer of some chemical contaminants from different substrates. Its 2015 overview of insect food and feed risks discusses why those production details matter.

This means safety should not be reduced to a yes-or-no conclusion about “insects” as a category. The species and intended use, how it was raised and processed, and the food’s local regulatory and labeling context are relevant. An assessment addressing one authorized food use does not establish the safety profile of a different species, ingredient or production method.

Allergy is a particular consumer consideration. Insect proteins may cause allergic reactions, and cross-reactivity or residual allergens from feed may be relevant. EFSA’s 2023 material describes the EU authorization context for house-cricket powder and a label warning for people with known allergies to crustaceans, molluscs and dust mites. That warning is tied to a product and jurisdiction; it should not be presented as a universal label rule for every insect food worldwide. See EFSA’s 2023 consumer-information material, and check the actual package and local rules. People with a known allergy should seek appropriate medical advice before trying a potentially relevant product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a product’s name tells you every ingredient or allergy warning. Read the package for the specific item and follow the labeling rules that apply where it is sold. For a known crustacean, mollusc or dust-mite allergy, the EFSA material on house-cricket powder is a reason to be especially cautious, not a substitute for the package information or professional advice.

So, are edible insects healthier or more sustainable?

Not categorically. Insects can supply protein and micronutrients, but species, product form, digestibility and protein-measurement methods matter. One mealworm life-cycle assessment found lower greenhouse-gas emissions and land use than the animal sources it examined, while its energy results varied by comparator. Neither that study nor the broader evidence summarized here establishes that insects are nutritionally superior to chicken or beef, or more sustainable than plant-based protein.

The most reliable answer is product-specific: compare like with like, use a relevant nutritional basis, examine several environmental impacts and check ingredient and allergen information. Where the products or study boundaries do not match, a precise winner is not supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are edible insects healthier than chicken or beef?

There is no categorical answer. Insects can provide protein and micronutrients, but composition varies by species, life stage, preparation and formulation. Protein estimates can also be affected by chitin, and digestibility varies by species. A fair nutritional comparison requires matched products, realistic serving sizes and comparable data; the available evidence does not establish that insects are generally healthier than chicken or beef.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are insects more sustainable than plant protein?

The evidence does not establish a general insect-versus-plant ranking. The mealworm life-cycle assessment compared a particular production chain with conventional animal sources, not every insect product with a defined plant food. A fair comparison would name the products, match the nutritional function and use compatible system boundaries and multiple environmental impact categories.

Does insect protein contain as much usable protein as the label suggests?

Not necessarily. Some protein estimates infer protein from nitrogen, but chitin in the insect exoskeleton contains nitrogen and can make true protein appear higher. EFSA cautions that protein levels can be overestimated in some insect formulations. Protein quality and digestibility also depend on species, so grams alone do not settle how much is digestible.

What did the mealworm environmental study find?

The 2012 Oonincx and de Boer assessment, summarized by FAO in 2013, found that the studied mealworm production chain had much lower greenhouse-gas emissions and lower land use than the conventional animal protein sources examined. Energy use was lower than beef, comparable with pork, and slightly higher than chicken and milk. These results are specific to that system and are not a universal ranking.

Can people with shellfish or dust-mite allergies eat cricket powder?

EFSA’s 2023 material describes an EU label warning for house-cricket powder for consumers with known allergies to crustaceans, molluscs and dust mites, and notes possible allergy and cross-reactivity concerns. Check the actual product label and local requirements. Anyone with a known relevant allergy should seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on a general statement about insect foods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Edible insects are a possible source of protein and micronutrients, but there is no universal nutrition or sustainability winner against chicken, beef or plant-based protein. Compare specific products on matched serving and environmental bases, and treat the mealworm findings as one scoped case rather than a category-wide result.
