Edge Typosquatting Warnings: Keep Them or Switch Them Off?

To disable Edge’s typo warning, open Settings, select Privacy, Search, and Services, scroll to Security, and use the control for Website typo protection. This removes Edge’s specific warning for likely mistyped common web addresses; it does not represent a request to disable every Edge security feature. Microsoft documents the setting location in its typosquatting guidance.

What Website typo protection is designed to do

Website typo protection is Edge’s defense against typosquatting. A typosquatting operator registers a domain that resembles a legitimate address, often by changing, removing, or transposing letters. Microsoft uses tailspintoy.com as an example of a lookalike for tailspintoys.com. If Edge believes you mistyped a familiar web address and may be heading to a malicious destination, the browser can warn you before you continue.

The risk is not limited to an accidental wrong page. A lookalike domain can show aggressive advertising, imitate a real sign-in page, collect passwords or payment details, or deliver malware. The warning is therefore an additional check at the moment you navigate, rather than a general test of every page on the internet. Microsoft describes the feature as a typosquatting checker that warns when you appear to have mistyped a common web address; its explanation and examples are in What is typosquatting?.

What changes when you disable it

Turning off the control removes this particular typo-protection warning layer. Edge may no longer interrupt navigation when the browser thinks an address is a misspelling of a common site. You remain responsible for recognizing an incorrect domain before entering credentials or other sensitive information.

Microsoft treats typo protection and SmartScreen as separate security features. Disabling the typo checker should therefore be understood narrowly: you are changing the behavior of the typo-warning control, not issuing a command to turn off SmartScreen or all of Edge’s security functions. Microsoft’s overview of the security features is available at Learn about security features in Microsoft Edge. The published guidance does not promise that every other protection will behave identically on every device, so avoid interpreting one setting as a browser-wide security switch.

Area With Website typo protection enabled After you disable it
Likely misspelling Edge can warn when a common address appears mistyped and may lead to a malicious lookalike. The specific typo-protection warning is removed.
SmartScreen and other features Handled by their own controls and checks. Microsoft documents these as separate from typo protection; this change is not a documented request to disable them.
Address accuracy You still need to read the domain before proceeding. Manual checking becomes especially important because the typo warning is no longer available.
Unsafe-site reporting You can report a suspicious destination through Edge’s feedback route. The same reporting route remains available if a page looks unsafe.

How to turn off Website typo protection

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and select the Settings and more menu, then choose Settings.

  2. In the Settings navigation, open Privacy, Search, and Services.

  3. Scroll down to the Security section. Microsoft places the Website typo protection control in this section.

  4. Use the control labeled for Website typo protection to disable the feature. Microsoft’s support page identifies the location but does not specify a universal visual label for the disabled state, so rely on the setting’s own current indication rather than assuming it will say a particular word such as “Off.”

  5. Return to the page you were trying to open and check the address yourself. Do not treat the absence of a warning as confirmation that the domain is genuine.

The support documentation does not show a confirmation dialog or require a separate save action. If Edge presents an interface that differs from the wording above, identify the control by its purpose and location instead of enabling unrelated security options.

Check the address before you continue

Disabling an automatic warning makes a deliberate address-checking routine more valuable. Microsoft recommends opening important destinations from saved favorites whenever possible. A favorite avoids retyping a domain for services such as banking, social media, shopping, work portals, or email.

When you type an address

When a link arrives in a message

Unexpected links deserve the same scrutiny as manually typed addresses. Inspect where the link leads before opening it, especially when the message creates urgency, asks you to sign in, or claims that an account or payment needs immediate attention. If the destination appears to be a typosquatting page, close the tab rather than attempting to log in or download anything from it.

How to report a suspicious site

Edge provides a reporting path for an unsafe destination: open the browser’s Help and feedback menu and select Report unsafe site. Use this route when a page appears to imitate a legitimate organization, asks for information under suspicious circumstances, or otherwise looks dangerous. Reporting does not replace leaving the page; close the tab first if you believe the destination is malicious, then submit the report from a safer page or browser session where practical.

Reporting and typo protection serve different purposes. The report sends information about a site for Microsoft’s safety process, while the setting controls whether Edge displays the particular typo warning during navigation.

When disabling the feature may be reasonable

Some people turn the checker off because a legitimate internal, development, or newly registered domain repeatedly resembles a common address and the warning interrupts normal work. Before changing the setting on a shared or managed computer, consider who relies on the warning and whether you can consistently verify domains by another method.

Situation Safer choice Reason
You frequently visit financial or shopping sites by typing addresses. Keep typo protection enabled and use favorites. These accounts are attractive targets, and the warning adds a useful pause before sign-in.
A trusted development or intranet address triggers a false positive. Disable only if you can verify the address through a reliable internal source. The inconvenience may be real, but the replacement control is careful human checking.
You share the computer with less technical users. Leave the feature enabled. Other users may benefit from a warning they would not notice themselves.
You are unsure why a warning appeared. Do not disable the feature merely to bypass it; inspect the domain first. A warning can indicate a genuine lookalike, not just a harmless spelling issue.

If the setting is missing or does not look the same

Microsoft’s reviewed support pages establish the menu path and the purpose of the control, but they do not document every platform, Edge release, exact toggle wording, or screen layout. If you cannot find the control, first make sure you are in Edge’s own Settings page rather than an operating-system security panel, then reopen Privacy, Search, and Services and look specifically under Security.

Do not infer from a missing control that SmartScreen has been disabled, that the browser is unsafe, or that an organization is enforcing a policy. The published guidance does not establish how enterprise policy, account type, or platform differences affect this choice. If the setting is unavailable on a managed device, contact the administrator responsible for that Edge installation instead of changing unrelated protections.

If you changed the control but still receive a warning, record the exact page address and the wording shown by Edge. The support material does not specify a separate confirmation dialog or a guaranteed immediate behavior for every version, so avoid repeatedly changing unrelated security settings. You can still leave the page, verify the domain independently, and use Help and feedback > Report unsafe site when appropriate.

How to restore typo protection

To put the warning back, return to the same Settings > Privacy, Search, and Services > Security area and use the Website typo protection control to enable it again. The exact visual state may differ by Edge version, and Microsoft does not publish a universal label for that state. After restoring it, continue using favorites and checking domains; the warning is a supplement to those habits, not a substitute for them.
