Edge on Windows 11: Safely Turn Extension Developer Mode On or Off

Open Edge’s Extensions management page, find the Developer mode control, and switch it on only while you need to load or test an unverified extension. Turn that control off afterward. It is separate from the switch that enables or disables an individual extension.

What Edge extension developer mode does

Microsoft Edge uses developer mode for installing and testing extensions that have not gone through Microsoft’s verification or certification process. That makes it useful to an extension developer or tester, but it also permits software outside the normal review path to run in the browser. Microsoft warns that unverified extensions can create security and privacy risks and recommends leaving developer mode off when it is not needed.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Microsoft describes the purpose this way: “Developer mode is meant for developers to test their extensions before submitting them to Microsoft and could be exploited by bad actors to load unsafe, unverified extensions if not used with caution.” Read the full explanation in Microsoft’s developer mode extension notification guidance.

If you see a message about a “developer mode extension” or “one or more developer mode extensions,” Edge is telling you that one or more installed extensions were loaded through that testing route. The message is a safety warning, not the same thing as an extension’s ordinary on/off switch.

Developer mode versus an extension’s own switch

These controls affect different things. Changing developer mode changes whether Edge permits the developer-loading workflow. Changing an extension switch changes whether one particular installed extension is active.

Control What it changes When to use it
Developer mode The browser-wide ability to work with extensions loaded for development or testing, including extensions that Microsoft has not verified or certified. Turn on temporarily when you are developing or testing an extension; turn off when testing is finished.
Extension enable/disable switch Whether one named extension runs in Edge. Use this when you want to stop one extension without changing the browser’s developer-mode setting.
Remove Uninstalls the selected extension from Edge. Use this when you no longer trust or need the extension; disabling it does not remove its files or entry.

Microsoft’s instructions for ordinary extension management are in Add, turn off, or remove extensions in Microsoft Edge. Do not turn off developer mode expecting that action alone to disable a particular extension, and do not disable an extension expecting the developer-mode setting to change.

How to enable extension developer mode in Edge on Windows 11

Edge’s labels can move slightly between browser builds, but the setting is on the Extensions management page. Use the visible Developer mode control rather than relying on an old screenshot. You can reach the page from the browser interface or by entering Edge’s internal address directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Microsoft Edge. Use the Windows 11 desktop or Start menu to launch the Edge installation in which you want to test the extension.
  2. Open the Extensions area. Select the Extensions button (the puzzle-piece icon) on the toolbar, then choose Manage extensions. If the button is not shown, open Settings and more (the three-dot menu), choose Extensions, and then open the management page. You can also type edge://extensions in the address bar and press Enter.
  3. Find Developer mode. On the management page, look for the control labeled Developer mode. It is a browser setting, not the switch on an individual extension card. If the page layout differs, use the page’s visible labels or browser find (Ctrl+F) for “Developer mode.”
  4. Turn the control on. Select the Developer mode switch. The page should show that the setting is enabled and expose the developer-testing controls that Edge provides for loading or working with an extension outside the normal store installation path.
  5. Load or test only the extension you trust. Check the extension’s source, code, and requested permissions before allowing it to run. Developer mode is not a trust rating; it simply permits a testing workflow.
  6. Turn it off after the test. Return to the same management page and switch Developer mode off when you no longer need to load or inspect the extension.

If your purpose is only to install a normal store extension, you generally do not need developer mode. For an extension from the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft says Edge may ask you to allow extensions from other stores. Accept that prompt only if you understand where the extension came from, then review the extension’s permissions.

Before enabling developer mode

Decide what you are testing and which extension should be present before you change the setting. Developer mode affects the browser’s extension-loading capability, so it is broader than simply starting one extension. Write down the extension’s name and source, and make sure you can identify the code or publisher responsible for it. If you cannot explain why an extension is installed, do not enable a testing workflow for it.

Open the extension’s Details page and read its requested permissions. An extension that asks to read or change data on all sites deserves more scrutiny than one limited to a specific site. You can often narrow Site access to the current site. Review the separate controls for InPrivate windows and file URLs as well; leave them off unless the test genuinely requires those capabilities.

For routine browsing, keep developer mode off. If you test frequently, a separate Edge testing profile or a separate Dev or Canary installation can keep experimental extensions away from the profile that contains everyday accounts, saved passwords, and work data. This separation does not make unverified code safe, but it reduces the amount of sensitive information exposed if the extension behaves unexpectedly.

How to disable developer mode

Disabling the setting uses the same management page; it does not require uninstalling every extension first.

  1. Open edge://extensions, or use Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Locate the Developer mode control.
  3. Switch it off.
  4. If you no longer need an extension that was loaded for testing, use that extension’s Remove command on its card as a separate cleanup step.

Turning developer mode off is the safer default for a routine browsing profile. It does not retroactively certify an extension, and it does not replace a review of extensions that are already installed.

What changes after you turn it off

The switch controls the developer-loading workflow; it is not an uninstall command and it is not a certification process. An extension that was already added may still appear in the list, and its own card switch remains a separate control. Remove any test extension you no longer need, especially if you cannot verify its source or permissions.

If Edge continues to show a developer-mode extension notification, check the entire list rather than looking only at the extension you remember loading. Microsoft’s wording—“one or more developer mode extensions”—means another extension can be responsible. Verify the Developer mode switch, remove obsolete testing extensions, and reopen Edge if the management page has not refreshed.

Stop one extension without changing developer mode

If a single extension is slowing down a site, displaying an unexpected message, or simply no longer needed, use its own control instead of changing the browser-wide developer setting.

  1. Open the Extensions button and choose Manage extensions, or go directly to edge://extensions.
  2. Find the extension card by name.
  3. Use the switch on that card to turn the extension off. The card should remain listed so you can turn it back on later.
  4. Choose Remove if you want it uninstalled rather than temporarily disabled.

This distinction matters when Edge reports a developer-mode extension: disabling the named extension can stop it from running, while switching off Developer mode addresses the browser setting and its warning.

Review permissions before leaving a testing extension enabled

An extension can request access that is broader than the page you are currently viewing. Microsoft provides site-access controls so you can reduce that exposure.

  1. On edge://extensions, find the extension and select its Details link or button.
  2. Review the permissions listed for the extension and its Site access setting.
  3. Where available, limit access to the current site instead of all sites when the extension does not need broader access.
  4. Check the separate options for running the extension in InPrivate windows and for accessing file URLs. Leave those options off unless the extension’s purpose requires them and you trust its source.

Microsoft documents these controls in Change site access permissions for extensions in Microsoft Edge. Permissions are independent of developer mode: turning the mode off does not replace a permission review.

Why the developer-mode notification appears

Microsoft says the notification appears because one or more developer mode extensions are present. It is intended to remind you that those extensions were loaded outside Microsoft’s normal verification or certification process.

Microsoft says the notification cannot be dismissed. If you are a developer who needs to test extensions regularly but does not want that notification in a normal browsing installation, Microsoft recommends using the Edge Dev or Canary channel for extension testing. The available guidance does not establish additional feature, stability, or release-cadence differences between those channels, so choose them for this testing purpose rather than assuming they behave identically to Stable.

Setup Practical implication
Edge Stable with a developer-mode extension The warning serves as a continuing safety reminder that a developer-mode extension is installed.
Edge Dev or Canary for testing Microsoft recommends these channels when a developer does not want to see the notification while testing.

Running a separate testing profile or channel can also help keep experimental extensions away from accounts, saved passwords, and everyday browsing data. The key security practice remains the same: install only code you can inspect or otherwise trust, and disable or remove it when testing ends.

When the Developer mode control is missing or unavailable

The page is not the Extensions management page

Confirm that the address bar shows edge://extensions or that you reached the page through Extensions > Manage extensions. The toolbar’s Extensions flyout lists installed extensions, but the browser-wide developer setting is on the management page.

The browser says an extension is managed by your organization

A work, school, or other managed installation can impose policies on extensions. Microsoft’s extension FAQ discusses organization-managed extensions and cautions that changing registry settings can be risky. Do not delete policy registry keys as a routine fix. Ask the administrator who manages the device or browser policy whether developer mode or the extension is permitted.

Rank #3

The switch is visible but cannot be changed

That usually indicates a policy or account-management restriction rather than a missing Windows 11 feature. Record the exact message, the extension name, and whether the device is managed, then contact the organization’s administrator. On a personally owned device, check whether a former work or school account, security product, or leftover management profile still controls Edge before changing system policy.

The warning remains after you switched developer mode off

Return to the management page and verify that the switch is actually off. Then inspect the extension list for another developer-mode extension; Microsoft’s wording refers to one or more extensions, so the warning can persist while any such extension remains. Remove extensions you no longer need, and restart Edge if the page does not immediately redraw its status.

You need to stop an extension immediately

Use the extension card’s own switch first. That stops that extension without changing the developer setting for other testing work. If you do not recognize the extension or cannot verify its source, remove it and review the permissions of the remaining extensions.

Security checklist for developer-mode extensions

  • Enable Developer mode only for a specific testing task.
  • Obtain the extension from a source you can identify and trust; do not treat the developer-mode switch as approval from Microsoft.
  • Read requested permissions before loading it.
  • Limit site access to the current site when broader access is unnecessary.
  • Keep InPrivate and file-URL access disabled unless the test requires them.
  • Do not use an experimental extension for sensitive browsing, banking, or work data while its code and permissions are unverified.
  • Disable or remove the extension and turn Developer mode off when testing is complete.
  • On a managed computer, follow the administrator’s process instead of editing policy files or the registry yourself.

These steps address separate layers of risk: the developer-mode setting controls the loading workflow, the extension switch controls whether one extension runs, and permission settings control what that extension can access.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Edge say that one or more extensions are in developer mode?

The message means Edge found one or more extensions loaded through the developer-testing route rather than the normal verified or certified installation path. It is a security reminder about the extensions currently present, not proof that a specific extension is malicious.

Can I dismiss the developer mode extension notification?

Microsoft says the notification cannot be dismissed. You can turn off Developer mode and remove the testing extensions you no longer need. Developers who want to test without seeing the notification are advised to use Edge Dev or Canary for that work.

Will turning off Developer mode disable my extension?

Not necessarily. Developer mode and an extension’s card switch are separate controls. Turn off the card switch to stop one extension, or choose Remove to uninstall it. Turn off Developer mode to stop using the browser-wide developer-loading workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Developer mode for an extension from the Chrome Web Store?

Normally, a regular store installation does not require Developer mode. Edge may ask you to allow extensions from other stores when you use the Chrome Web Store. Only accept that prompt when you understand the extension’s source, and review its requested permissions afterward.

How can I limit what a developer-mode extension can access?

Open the extension’s Details page from edge://extensions. Review Site access and choose the narrowest option available, such as the current site instead of all sites. Check the separate InPrivate and file-URL options and leave them disabled unless the test requires them.

What if Developer mode is missing or locked?

First confirm that you are on edge://extensions, not only the toolbar flyout. If the control is still unavailable or Edge says the browser is managed by an organization, a work or school policy may control it. Contact the administrator instead of deleting registry entries or other policy data.

Does disabling Developer mode certify an extension?

No. The setting controls whether Edge permits the developer-loading workflow. It does not verify the extension, change its permissions, or certify code that was already installed. Review the source and permissions, then disable or remove the extension when testing is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the warning still visible after I turned the switch off?

Check the switch again and inspect every extension card. The warning refers to one or more developer-mode extensions, so another extension may still be responsible. Remove obsolete testing extensions and restart Edge if the page has not refreshed its status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Edge show a developer mode extension notification?

Microsoft says the notification appears when one or more installed extensions were loaded through developer mode, outside the normal verification or certification path.

Can the developer mode notification be dismissed?

No. Microsoft says it cannot be dismissed. Turn off Developer mode, remove unneeded testing extensions, or use Edge Dev or Canary for regular extension testing.

Does turning off Developer mode disable an extension?

No. Use the individual extension card’s switch to disable one extension, or choose Remove to uninstall it. Developer mode is a separate browser setting.

Do Chrome Web Store extensions require Developer mode?

Generally no. Edge may ask you to allow extensions from other stores. Review the extension’s source and permissions before accepting that prompt.

How do I restrict an extension’s permissions?

Open its Details page from edge://extensions, adjust Site access to the narrowest option available, and review the InPrivate and file-URL controls.

What should I do if the setting is managed by my organization?

Contact the administrator responsible for Edge. Microsoft cautions that deleting registry policy entries can be risky, so do not use that as a routine fix.

Does switching Developer mode off certify installed code?

No. It only changes the browser’s developer-loading setting. It does not verify an extension or replace a review of its source and permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might the warning remain after I switch Developer mode off?

Another developer-mode extension may still be installed. Check every extension card, remove obsolete testing extensions, and restart Edge if the status has not refreshed.

The Bottom Line

Use edge://extensions to find the browser-wide Developer mode switch. Enable it only for a defined testing task, inspect the extension and its permissions, and turn it off afterward. To stop one extension, use that extension’s own switch or Remove command. If Edge is managed by an organization, ask the administrator rather than changing registry policies.
