Edge DevTools MCP: Connect Chrome DevTools MCP to Microsoft Edge

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Edge DevTools MCP” usually means using the Chrome DevTools MCP server with Microsoft Edge or a WebView2 app—not a separate product with that exact name. Install Node.js and npm, then configure the server either to launch Edge, attach to an existing Edge session, or connect to a WebView2 host. Attaching to a live profile gives the agent access to its signed-in session data, including cookies, so use that mode only with an agent you trust.

What Edge DevTools MCP means

Microsoft’s guide, “Let agents inspect your site and WebView2 app with Chrome DevTools MCP,” describes configuring the Chrome DevTools MCP server to work with Microsoft Edge and WebView2. The names refer to distinct things: Edge DevTools are Microsoft Edge’s debugging tools; Chrome DevTools MCP is a separate server project that exposes browser automation, debugging, and performance analysis to an MCP-capable coding assistant.

Microsoft describes the server as giving an AI coding assistant access to Microsoft Edge DevTools for automation, debugging, and performance analysis. Although the server is built for Chrome, Microsoft says it supports Chromium-based browsers including Edge and WebView2 when configured to target them. The technical basis is protocol compatibility: Microsoft states that the Microsoft Edge DevTools Protocol matches the APIs of the Chrome DevTools Protocol.

What you need before setup

  • Node.js, with the latest LTS recommended by Microsoft’s setup guide.
  • npm, installed with or alongside Node.js.
  • An installed Microsoft Edge channel for browser-based setup, or an application hosting WebView2 for the WebView2 route.
  • An MCP-capable coding agent. The exact configuration file and wrapper depend on the client; use that client’s documentation to locate and validate its MCP settings.

The guide’s examples launch the package with npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latest. The configuration examples below show the server-specific arguments and common client wrappers; add them in the configuration location expected by your coding agent.

Choose how the server connects

Connection method Best for What you configure Profile and security implications
Launch Edge A fresh browser run or a controlled test session Edge executable path; optionally headless, isolated, or viewport settings The server launches the browser. The documented --isolated option uses an isolated profile; it is not a complete security guarantee.
Attach to running Edge Working with an existing browser state, such as a signed-in session Enable remote debugging, then set --autoConnect and the Edge user-data directory The agent can access active-session data, including logged-in accounts, cookies, and data available through JavaScript APIs.
Attach to WebView2 Inspecting an app’s embedded WebView2 content Enable remote debugging for the host, then set --autoConnect and the WebView2 user-data directory Targets the host app’s WebView2 instance rather than a normal Edge window. Check that the profile path ends in EBWebView.

Option 1: Let the MCP server launch Edge

This route is the most direct when you do not need an existing Edge profile. Set --executablePath to the Edge binary installed on your machine. Microsoft’s guide provides default Stable locations for Windows, macOS, and Linux; paths can differ by installation, channel, or device policy, so verify the actual binary path locally before using an example. The guide also documents optional headless, isolated-profile, and viewport flags.

Example MCP configuration

For VS Code, Microsoft’s examples use a servers object and type: "stdio". The following shows the shape of a server entry; replace the executable path with the one for your OS and Edge installation:

{
  "servers": {
    "edge-devtools": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "chrome-devtools-mcp@latest",
        "--executablePath=/path/to/your/edge"
      ]
    }
  }
}

The path above is deliberately illustrative, not a universal Edge installation path. On Windows, preserve valid JSON escaping if a path contains backslashes. You can add documented options such as --headless, --isolated, or --viewport=1280x720 as separate arguments in the array. An isolated temporary profile is useful for separating a run from routine browsing, but do not treat it as a guarantee against every security risk.

Option 2: Attach to an existing Edge session

Choose this when the task depends on the current browser state—for example, an authenticated site or a particular tab. Start Edge with remote debugging enabled, or enable remote debugging through edge://inspect, then configure the MCP server with --autoConnect and the user-data directory for the Edge channel you are using.

Microsoft’s guide shows default profile locations and explains how the server discovers the browser’s DevTools endpoint. The protocol’s general connection flow is to start the browser with a remote debugging port, query /json/list for attachable targets, and connect to a target’s webSocketDebuggerUrl. For Chrome DevTools MCP, the guide says Puppeteer uses DevToolsActivePort to find the running browser endpoint when --autoConnect and --user-data-dir are supplied. You do not usually need to implement that protocol flow yourself when using the MCP server.

Security: an attached session is sensitive

Microsoft warns that auto-connect gives the agent access to the active browser session, including logged-in accounts, cookies, and other information exposed through JavaScript APIs. Use this mode only with an agent you trust, and take care with prompts and tasks that could expose or act on account data. If you do not need the active profile, prefer launching Edge separately and consider the documented isolated-profile option.

Option 3: Attach to a WebView2 host

Use this route to inspect a desktop application’s embedded WebView2 content. Enable remote debugging for the host’s WebView2 instance, identify its user-data directory, and configure the MCP server with --autoConnect and that directory. Microsoft notes that the relevant directory has an EBWebView suffix; if deriving the location from source code, that suffix may need to be appended.

WebView2 setup is host-specific. Confirm that the host actually enables remote debugging and that the directory belongs to the correct app profile. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also calls out checking the registry key against the host executable name and restarting the host after setting the key.

Client configuration varies

The server arguments are not the only configuration detail. Microsoft’s examples use different wrappers for different clients: VS Code uses servers with type: "stdio"; the Copilot CLI example uses mcpServers with type: "local"; other clients generally use an mcpServers wrapper without a type field. Do not paste one client’s wrapper into another client’s settings without checking its documentation.

After configuration, use a basic task to confirm the connection, such as navigating to https://contoso.com and taking a screenshot, or asking the agent to take a snapshot of the current page. Those are Microsoft’s example task patterns; adapt the URL and action to your own test page.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to get a website screenshot from code, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo is not a replacement for attaching an agent to an interactive Edge or WebView2 session; it is an alternative when the task is to capture a site. It removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, while paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Troubleshooting Edge DevTools MCP

“Could not connect to Chrome”

  • Confirm Edge is running if you are attaching to an existing session.
  • Check that remote debugging is enabled for the Edge instance.
  • Verify that --user-data-dir points to the profile directory for the Edge channel you actually launched.
  • Check that DevToolsActivePort exists in the expected user-data directory when using the auto-connect flow.

Edge cannot be found or launched

  • Verify the --executablePath points to the installed Edge binary, not a shortcut or an outdated channel path.
  • On Windows, check JSON escaping for backslashes in the path.
  • Check whether device policy or a non-default installation location changes the expected path.

WebView2 does not connect

  • Confirm remote debugging is enabled for the WebView2 instance in the host.
  • Check that the registry key matches the host executable name.
  • Restart the host application after setting the registry key.
  • Verify that the supplied profile directory has the expected EBWebView suffix.

The server starts, but the agent has the wrong configuration

Check the MCP client’s required configuration path and wrapper. A correct server command placed under the wrong key, or a VS Code wrapper copied into a client expecting mcpServers, can prevent the client from starting the server correctly. Validate both the JSON syntax and each argument separately.

What Edge DevTools MCP is—and is not

Microsoft announced on September 21, 2026 that its implementation of the WebMCP specification in Edge was ready for testing, as described in the Edge Developer Blog. WebMCP is adjacent browser-agent functionality, not another name for the Chrome DevTools MCP server. If you are following Microsoft’s Chrome DevTools MCP setup guide, the relevant task here is configuring that server to launch or connect to Edge or WebView2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Edge DevTools MCP require Google Chrome?

No. Microsoft says Chrome DevTools MCP supports Chromium-based browsers including Microsoft Edge when configured to target them.

Can I use it with a signed-in Edge profile?

Yes, through auto-connect, but that exposes the active session’s account data and cookies to the agent. Use only with an agent you trust.
