The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has reportedly asked Y S Avinash Reddy to appear for questioning on October 14, 2026, as it investigates an alleged financial trail connected to the March 2019 murder of former Andhra Pradesh minister and parliamentarian Y S Vivekananda Reddy. As of October 3, the appearance was still in the future. The reported ₹40-crore figure is an allegation being examined, not an established payment or a finding of guilt.

Why has the ED summoned Avinash Reddy?

Hindustan Times reported on October 2, 2026, that the ED issued Avinash Reddy a notice to appear on October 14 in a money-laundering investigation into an alleged financial trail linked to the murder. The report said the agency had already questioned four people. It attributed the procedural details to people familiar with the matter; no separate named statement from an ED official was available in the cited reporting. Hindustan Times

A summons is a request to appear for questioning. It is not, by itself, proof that a payment took place or that anyone committed a crime. The October 14 appearance had not yet occurred as of October 3, 2026.

What does the alleged ₹40-crore money trail refer to?

Reports describe ₹40 crore as an alleged deal or promised payment connected to the murder. Telangana Today attributes the alleged promise to approver Shaik Dastagiri. That figure remains part of allegations under investigation, not a verified transfer or a court-established fact. Telangana Today

Hindustan Times separately reported that the ED was examining an alleged ₹1-crore advance to Dastagiri and a distinct alleged ₹4-crore cash transfer, including where the money came from. These reported amounts have different claimed roles; the available reporting does not establish that they were paid or explain them as parts of a single completed transaction.

Reported amount Claimed context Status in the cited reporting
₹40 crore An alleged deal or promise connected to the murder; Telangana Today attributes the promise to Shaik Dastagiri. Allegation under investigation, not an established payment.
₹1 crore An alleged advance to Dastagiri examined by the ED, according to Hindustan Times. Reported allegation; payment is not established.
₹4 crore A separate alleged cash transfer whose source the ED was reportedly examining, according to Hindustan Times. Reported allegation; transfer and source are not established.

How are the CBI and ED investigations different?

The agencies are looking at related aspects of the case, but their investigations are distinct. The CBI is investigating the circumstances of the killing and related allegations. The ED is examining the alleged financial trail in a money-laundering case reportedly based on the CBI’s work. Hindustan Times

That distinction matters: an allegation being examined by the ED is not a finding by the CBI or a court about who arranged or carried out the murder. Hindustan Times reported that Avinash Reddy and his father, Y S Bhaskar Reddy, are listed as accused Nos. 7 and 8, respectively, in the murder case. Those are attributed case-status descriptions, not findings of guilt. Hindustan Times

What did the Supreme Court decide in 2023?

In an April 24, 2023 order in Suneetha Narreddy v. Y. S. Avinash Reddy & Anr., the Supreme Court set aside a Telangana High Court interim order that had directed the questioning of Avinash Reddy in writing or by printed questionnaire and protected him from arrest at that stage. The Supreme Court called those particular directions unwarranted, observing: “An order of this nature would stultify the investigation.” It also extended the CBI investigation deadline to June 30, 2023. Supreme Court of India order, April 24, 2023

The order addressed how the investigation should proceed at that point; it did not determine whether the murder allegations were true or decide guilt. It also does not establish Avinash Reddy’s current bail or trial status.

What is established so far—and what is not?

  • Reported procedural step: the ED issued a notice asking Avinash Reddy to appear on October 14, 2026, according to Hindustan Times.
  • Investigation focus: the ED is examining an alleged financial trail, while the CBI’s investigation concerns the murder and related allegations.
  • Unproven figures: the ₹40-crore, ₹1-crore and ₹4-crore amounts are reported allegations with distinct claimed contexts, not established payments.
  • No finding of guilt: neither the reported summons nor the Supreme Court’s 2023 procedural order establishes responsibility for the murder.
