Build it around the outcome your store needs most—new customers, more completed purchases, repeat business, or referrals—rather than trying to use every marketing channel at once.
What an eCommerce marketing strategy should do
A strategy is more than a channel list or a calendar of promotions. It explains who the store serves, why its offer is relevant, how it will reach potential buyers, what results it expects, and how the team will decide whether to continue or change course. Shopify’s eCommerce marketing guide groups the work into four stages: attract, convert, retain, and optimize. Use these as a planning framework, not a checklist requiring every store to invest equally in every stage.

The useful starting point is the business problem. A store with little qualified traffic may need to improve discovery; one with traffic but few orders may need to address the product page or checkout; a store with occasional buyers may need to give customers a reason to return. The goal determines which marketing work deserves attention first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

1. Define the customer, the offer, and the problem
Write a short description of what the store sells, who is most likely to need it, and what makes the offer distinct. Describe the customer in terms that affect a marketing decision: location, role or circumstances, budget considerations, and the problem they are trying to solve. Use existing customer, sales, and site-traffic information where available; avoid treating a broad demographic label as a complete audience profile.

Then make the message concrete. A visitor should be able to understand what the product is, who it is for, and why it may suit them. Shopify’s marketing-plan guidance recommends aligning the store’s message and tactics with the customers and products rather than choosing tactics in isolation.
2. Choose the immediate objective
Decide which part of the customer journey is the constraint or priority now. Shopify’s planning guide distinguishes goals such as attracting prospects, converting visitors, encouraging repeat purchases, and generating referrals. The measures should match that job: page views and inbound links can help assess discovery, conversion rate can assess purchasing, returning-customer rate can assess retention, and referral sales can assess advocacy. These are examples of measures, not promised outcomes or universal benchmarks.
Be precise about the outcome. “Improve marketing” is not actionable; “increase purchases of a particular product from organic search” or “recover more abandoned carts during this campaign” points toward a tactic and a way to evaluate it.

3. Select a small channel mix
Possible channels include organic search and content, paid search, email and SMS, social media, creator or influencer partnerships, affiliate marketing, promotions, customer service, and referral or loyalty programs. A store does not need all of them. Choose channels where the intended customer looks for information or recommendations, where the tactic can serve the chosen objective, and where the team can sustain the work.
Compare the candidates before committing:
- Audience fit: Is this channel relevant to the people the store wants to reach?
- Funnel job: Is it intended to attract, convert, retain, or prompt advocacy?
- Cost and capacity: What cash budget and staff time will creation, setup, and maintenance require?
- Time horizon: Is the initiative meant to support an immediate campaign, build ongoing discovery, or strengthen customer relationships?
- Sustainability: Can the team produce useful, channel-appropriate material consistently?
- Measurement: What metric will determine whether the effort should continue, change, or expand?
Shopify’s content marketing guidance emphasizes choosing work a business can maintain. A narrower mix that receives consistent attention is more practical than a presence on every platform that the team cannot keep current.
4. Set a measurable goal, milestones, and budget
For each initiative, state the intended result, the metric, the period being assessed, and the budget or staff capacity available. Break longer campaigns into milestones so the team can check progress while there is still time to adjust. Shopify’s plan examples include goals for customer acquisition, product sales, subscriptions, cart recovery, and year-over-year sales; they are examples of goal types, not performance standards.
Set the budget before selecting tactics. Include both direct spend and the time needed to create assets, manage campaigns, answer customers, and analyze results. If several channels compete for limited resources, prioritize the ones that most directly support the current objective and can be measured credibly.
5. Make the store discoverable and usable
Marketing can bring people to a store, but the site also needs to help shoppers and search engines understand its products and structure. Google’s eCommerce search guidance covers product data, structured data, URL design, navigation, reviews, pagination, and page-loading patterns. These are parts of ecommerce SEO alongside page copy; search visibility is an ongoing discovery effort, not a guarantee of rankings or sales.
For a new site, Google’s launch guidance recommends verifying site ownership, requesting indexing, and monitoring indexing. URL Inspection is suited to a small number of URLs; a sitemap can help when there are many. Google also describes Merchant Center as a way to provide product descriptions and deals where applicable; signup is required for eligibility to appear in the Google Shopping tab. None of these steps guarantees sales or placement. Keeping a site inaccessible before launch can delay its search visibility, so the launch approach should account for both readiness and discovery.

6. Review performance and adjust
Compare results with the goal and milestones you set, using sales, traffic, customer behavior, and campaign reports as appropriate. A channel’s reach alone does not show whether it served its intended purpose. If a milestone is missed, investigate whether the audience, message, offer, channel, or on-site experience is the likely issue before simply increasing spend.
Update the plan when the products, store, brand, tactics, or customer needs change. Shopify’s planning guidance recommends analyzing impact and revising tactics rather than treating the initial plan as fixed.
Choose measures that match the job
Use a small set of measures that can answer whether an initiative is doing what it was designed to do. Shopify’s funnel examples provide a starting point:
Best Value
| Stage | Marketing job | Example measures |
|---|---|---|
| Attract | Bring relevant prospective customers to the store | Page views; inbound links |
| Convert | Help interested visitors complete a purchase | Conversion rate |
| Retain | Encourage existing customers to buy again | Returning-customer rate |
| Advocate | Prompt customers to recommend the store | Referral sales |
These measures should be interpreted in the context of the specific campaign and store. Define the measurement period and the intended customer action in advance; otherwise, a report can show activity without showing whether the strategy worked.
Plan for launch and search discovery
A launch can be public all at once, begin with a homepage, expose the full site while products are unavailable, or use a soft launch. Shopify describes these as different launch approaches, while Google notes that an inaccessible site may take longer to gain search visibility. Choose based on operational readiness and the need to be discoverable, and verify that the pages intended for search can be accessed and indexed.
For indexing, Google recommends site ownership verification, URL Inspection for a small number of pages or sitemap submission for many, followed by monitoring indexing status. Merchant Center can be relevant for product descriptions and deals; its use is optional for a marketing plan, and eligibility for the Shopping tab requires signup.
Keep the plan focused
Before adding a channel, ask whether it reaches the intended customer, supports the current objective, fits the available budget and staff time, and has a clear measure of success. If one answer is missing, define it before launching. A strategy is useful when it helps the team make these trade-offs repeatedly—not when it accumulates tactics without a reason for each one.
