There is no universal winner between eBay and Facebook Marketplace. For a US transaction, the sensible choice depends on whether the sale is local or shipped, the item category and price, the platform fees shown at checkout, and how much formal dispute protection you need.
Start with the transaction you are actually making
“eBay versus Facebook Marketplace” combines two different kinds of commerce. A shipped, in-platform order is not the same risk as a cash handoff in a parking lot, even when the same item is listed on both services. eBay.com publishes a US fee schedule and a conditional Money Back Guarantee. Facebook Marketplace supports local collection broadly, while delivery and shipping features depend on the seller’s location and the exact listing.

Use the comparison below as a starting point, then read the terms displayed for the individual listing and checkout. Facebook’s own help pages say delivery may be unavailable in some locations and that shipping availability depends on where the seller lives (Meta’s delivery guidance; Meta’s selling guidance).
| Question | eBay.com (US) | Facebook Marketplace |
|---|---|---|
| Typical transaction | Platform checkout with shipping or local collection, depending on the listing | Often local collection; in-app delivery or shipping may be available only in supported locations |
| Seller fee certainty | Published category-based insertion and final-value fees, plus possible extras | No single current fee schedule is established for every location and transaction type; inspect the listing and checkout |
| Shipping tools | Eligible US individual sellers may receive prepaid labels and automatic tracking through Ship with eBay | Shipping and delivery options vary by location and listing; local pickup has no carrier tracking |
| Buyer recourse | Money Back Guarantee can cover non-delivery and item-condition problems when policy conditions are met | Ratings and safety advice help assess risk, but there is no universal refund guarantee established for every Marketplace deal |
How eBay fees are calculated
eBay’s US fee page says most categories receive 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month. After that allowance, each additional listing costs $0.35. The allowance and insertion charge concern listing creation; they do not replace the fee charged when an item sells.

For most categories, eBay lists a final-value fee of 13.6% of the total sale amount up to $7,500 per item, and 2.35% of the portion above $7,500, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 for orders of $10 or less or $0.40 for orders above $10. These are the current US eBay.com figures shown on eBay’s Selling fees page checked in 2026.
“Total amount of the sale” generally includes the item price, handling, shipping collected from the buyer, sales tax, and other applicable fees. Category rates and exceptions differ, and optional listing upgrades, Store status, seller performance, international selling, and account circumstances can change the result. Do not apply the 13.6% figure to every product without checking the category table.
| Fee element | US eBay.com baseline described by eBay | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly insertion allowance | 250 listings at $0 insertion fee in most categories | Your account allowance, category exclusions, and whether you have used the allowance |
| Additional insertion | $0.35 per listing after the allowance | Whether the listing is an eligible additional listing and whether optional upgrades add cost |
| Final-value percentage | 13.6% up to $7,500; 2.35% on the amount above $7,500 for most categories | Exact category, seller status, item price, shipping and handling, tax, and other sale amounts |
| Per-order fee | $0.30 for an order of $10 or less; $0.40 above $10 | Whether multiple items are combined into one order and the order total |
Worked example: a typical-priced item
Assume a US seller in a category that uses the stated baseline lists one item for $100, charges the buyer $15 shipping, collects $10 sales tax through checkout, has not used an optional upgrade, and has an order above $10. The illustrative total amount of the sale is $125. A 13.6% final-value fee on $125 is $17.00, and the per-order fee is $0.40, for $17.40 in those two fees before the postage label, packaging, insertion charges (if any), or other account-specific costs. The example is not a quote for every category or seller; tax handling and category rates must be confirmed on the fee page and listing screen.
Worked example: a high-value item
Using the same stated baseline for an $8,000 item with no separate shipping or tax assumptions, the first $7,500 would produce $1,020 in percentage fees (13.6%), and the remaining $500 would produce $11.75 at 2.35%. Adding the $0.40 per-order fee gives $1,032.15 before any insertion, optional, shipping, or account-specific charges. High-value categories can use different rates, so check the category-specific schedule before publishing.
eBay’s fee page also announced a US seller currency-conversion charge increase effective October 14, 2026. Treat that as an announced policy change and verify the current page for the way it applies to your account and transaction rather than assuming every seller is affected identically.
Why Facebook Marketplace fees are harder to state as one number
The available Meta guidance does not establish one current, universal seller-fee schedule for all Marketplace locations and transaction types. Shipping or delivery may be unavailable, and the terms shown for an in-app shipped order can differ from a local exchange. Consequently, it is not accurate to promise that every Marketplace sale is free or that Marketplace is always cheaper than eBay.
Before agreeing to a shipped purchase, open the exact listing and proceed far enough to see the delivery, payment, service-fee, tax, and seller-payout terms. Save a screenshot or receipt showing what you accepted. For a local pickup, agree in writing on the item, price, meeting place, payment method, and inspection before handing over money or goods; there may be no platform-calculated shipping or transaction record.

Shipping and delivery: labels, tracking, and pickup
eBay’s Ship with eBay option
Ship with eBay can provide an eligible individual seller with a prepaid label or QR code and upload tracking automatically. The published eligibility description is limited: the item and buyer must be in the United States, the package must fit the specified size and weight limits, the Buy It Now price must be $200 or less, and the listing must be in a participating category. Business accounts, auctions, and several other cases are excluded.
Eligibility is determined by the listing and account, not simply by the fact that an item is sold on eBay. If the feature appears, follow the package dimensions and weight requested during listing; inaccurate measurements can lead to a postage adjustment or a label that cannot be used.
Who pays the eBay label?
- Buyer-paid shipping: If the listing does not offer free shipping, the buyer pays the shipping amount at checkout and eBay collects it for the prepaid label.
- Free shipping: If the seller offers free shipping through the feature, the seller pays the label amount shown during listing; that amount is deducted when the item sells.
- Other shipping methods: Sellers can use shipping arrangements outside this feature, subject to the listing’s terms and eBay’s requirements. Tracking, postage payment, and handling then follow that method rather than the Ship with eBay workflow.
Free shipping is therefore a pricing choice, not proof that shipping costs disappear. A seller normally builds the expected postage into the item price or accepts it as a selling expense.
Facebook shipped orders versus local collection
Meta’s delivery help page says Marketplace delivery is unavailable in some locations and that sellers may be able to offer shipping depending on where they live. A shipped order that uses an in-app checkout flow should be evaluated from the terms displayed for that order. Do not transfer the protections or tracking of that flow to a listing that is arranged by private messages and paid off-platform.

Local collection is a separate transaction. There is no carrier scan proving dispatch or delivery, so the parties should choose a public, practical meeting place, inspect the item before payment, and use a payment method both parties understand. For electronics, test power, ports, account locks, serial numbers, and included accessories while the seller is present. For bulky goods, confirm who is responsible for loading and transport before meeting.
Buyer protection and what happens when something goes wrong
eBay Money Back Guarantee
For eligible eBay.com purchases, the Money Back Guarantee can cover an item that does not arrive or one that arrives wrong, broken, damaged, faulty, or materially unlike the listing. eBay’s policy states: “The eBay Money Back Guarantee applies when the buyer doesn’t receive an item.” That sentence sits within a policy containing eligibility rules, exclusions, payment requirements, and deadlines; it is not a promise that every dispute has the same outcome.
To preserve eligibility, the buyer generally must complete and pay through eBay with an eligible payment method, use the policy’s reporting route, meet the time limits, and avoid excluded categories or circumstances. Read the current eBay Money Back Guarantee policy for the exact item and checkout route.

Non-delivery reporting sequence on eBay
- Check the order’s estimated or actual delivery date and the carrier tracking shown in the order details.
- If the item has not arrived, report the non-delivery through the eBay order interface after the delivery date has passed.
- Use the latest reporting point stated by the policy; for a typical non-delivery claim, eBay gives a general latest point of 30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date.
- Keep the order confirmation, tracking history, messages, photographs of packaging, and any carrier case number.
- Allow the seller the policy response period, generally three business days, before escalating through the available eBay route.
Those periods are policy terms, not a guarantee that a claim will be decided for the buyer. A seller may provide delivery evidence, a carrier may update tracking later, or an exclusion may apply.
Facebook Marketplace recourse is transaction-specific
The available Meta material supports safety guidance and reputation signals but does not establish a broad, equivalent refund guarantee for every Marketplace transaction. In particular, a private local exchange or off-platform payment should not be described as covered merely because the conversation began on Facebook.
Meta says Marketplace seller ratings become public after five or more ratings. It also says it does not verify that reviewers actually purchased or used the item or service (How ratings work on Facebook Marketplace). A high rating can be useful context, but it is not proof of authenticity, condition, delivery, or a guaranteed refund.
Use Meta’s Tips for Shopping Safely alongside the terms shown for the exact listing. Keep communication and receipts, be cautious of pressure to move payment outside the platform, and stop if the seller changes the agreed item, price, or meeting conditions.
Buyer decision framework
Answer these questions before paying:
- What is the delivered total? Add the item price, shipping, taxes, service fees, and any required handling. For local pickup, include travel, equipment, or transport costs that you will actually incur.
- Where does payment occur? Platform checkout creates an order record and may activate a policy; a cash handoff or private transfer may not.
- Can you prove delivery or inspection? A carrier tracking number helps with shipment disputes. A local purchase needs an inspection plan because there is no carrier proof.
- What reasons and deadlines apply to a refund? Read the policy attached to the checkout route, including exclusions and the last reporting date.
- What evidence exists about the seller? Check listing history, photographs, detailed descriptions, seller ratings, and answers to specific questions. Treat ratings as signals, not guarantees.
| Buyer priority | Usually favors eBay when | Marketplace may fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Formal non-delivery recourse | You pay through an eligible eBay checkout and the purchase meets Money Back Guarantee conditions | You have confirmed that the exact in-app shipped transaction displays protections you understand |
| Immediate inspection | The eBay listing offers local collection and the seller agrees to inspection | The item is nearby and you can inspect it before paying |
| Predictable shipping evidence | The listing uses a supported carrier or Ship with eBay and tracking appears in the order | The listing’s supported delivery flow clearly supplies tracking and terms |
| Lowest apparent price | You calculate eBay’s delivered total rather than comparing only item prices | The local seller’s final price and travel cost remain lower after you assess the added risk |
Seller decision framework
Choose eBay when fee visibility and a national shipped audience matter
eBay is easier to model when you know the category, price, shipping charge, tax treatment, account status, and listing options. Its published fee schedule lets you estimate the platform deduction, while integrated labels can reduce manual tracking work for eligible US listings. The trade-off is that fees can be substantial, category exceptions matter, and a buyer may open a policy case that requires organized records.
Prepare a seller file for every order: the original description, photographs showing condition and serial numbers, package weight and dimensions, postage receipt, tracking acceptance scan, delivery confirmation, and all platform messages. Describe defects and included accessories precisely; an accurate listing reduces both returns and disputes.
Choose Facebook Marketplace when the item is practical to inspect locally
Local Marketplace can make sense for furniture, appliances, bulky equipment, or other goods where carrier cost and damage risk would erase the benefit of shipping. The absence of a universal fee schedule means you must evaluate the exact payment and delivery terms rather than assume a zero-fee sale. You also take more responsibility for arranging a safe meeting, confirming payment, and documenting the handoff.

Practical checklists
Before an eBay purchase
- Confirm the listing’s condition, model, compatibility, accessories, and return language.
- Calculate item price plus shipping and tax; do not compare headline prices alone.
- Check that checkout remains on eBay and that the order shows an eligible payment route.
- Save the listing and order details until the item has been inspected and the reporting window has passed.
Before a Marketplace local pickup
- Ask for the exact item, known defects, age, and reason for sale.
- Agree on a public meeting location, time, final price, and payment method in messages.
- Inspect and test the item before payment; verify that accounts are removed from phones, computers, and other locked devices.
- Do not send a deposit simply because a seller claims other buyers are waiting.
Before a Marketplace shipped purchase
- Confirm that delivery is available in your location and that the listing’s checkout terms are visible.
- Identify every fee, tax, shipping charge, expected dispatch date, tracking method, and stated remedy.
- Keep the transaction in the supported in-app flow where possible; be wary of requests for unprotected payment.
- Save screenshots, receipts, tracking updates, and messages until the item is working and any applicable claim period ends.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Comparing a seller’s net proceeds with a buyer’s total
A seller may focus on the amount deposited after eBay fees, while a buyer sees the item price before shipping and tax. Use one consistent view: for a buyer, compare delivered totals; for a seller, subtract platform fees, label cost, packaging, returns, and time from the amount collected.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming “free shipping” means no shipping expense
On eBay, free shipping means the seller pays the label amount shown during listing when using the described feature. Build that expense into the asking price or margin. On Marketplace, confirm who pays and how a label is issued instead of relying on the word “free.”
Treating a rating as insurance
Marketplace ratings are not verified purchase records according to Meta. eBay feedback is useful history, but the Money Back Guarantee still depends on the order, payment route, item category, and deadlines. Use ratings to generate questions, not to skip inspection or documentation.
Missing a claim deadline
Record the estimated delivery date as soon as an eBay order is placed. If it does not arrive, report it through the order interface as soon as the policy allows and before the general 30-calendar-day latest point described for non-delivery. For any Marketplace transaction, rely on the exact terms shown for that order because a universal deadline has not been established.
Moving payment off-platform to close a deal
Off-platform payment can remove the order record and any platform policy that would otherwise apply. If a seller or buyer insists on a different payment route, reassess the transaction as a private deal, document the new terms, and walk away if the pressure or explanation is inconsistent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to make the final choice
- Classify the deal as local pickup, platform-mediated shipping, or privately arranged shipping.
- For eBay, identify the category and calculate the likely final-value, per-order, insertion, shipping, and tax effects using the current fee schedule.
- For Marketplace, open the actual listing and checkout to see whether delivery is supported and which fees, payment terms, tracking, and remedies are displayed.
- Compare the total cost and the evidence you will have if the item is late, damaged, counterfeit, incomplete, or materially different.
- Choose the route whose protections and logistics you can follow in practice, not the one that merely shows the lower headline price.
Bottom line
eBay is the more transparent option for a US shipped sale when you want published seller fees, an order record, tracking tools, and a conditional Money Back Guarantee. Facebook Marketplace can be effective for local, inspect-before-you-pay transactions and may also support shipped orders in some locations, but its delivery availability, fees, and recourse must be verified for the exact listing. Compare the complete delivered cost, payment path, tracking, inspection opportunity, and claim deadline every time; neither platform is automatically the cheapest or safest in every transaction.
