A private sale gives you more control over the asking price, but the amount you actually receive depends on a buyer, your costs, and the work of completing the sale. Neither route is reliably better for every game: compare a current EB Games quote with credible prices for the same game and condition, then weigh cash against credit, time, and certainty.

What matters most in the choice
The key distinction is not simply “trade-in price versus sale price.” An EB Games trade-in exchanges an eligible game for trade credit under the store’s current terms. A private sale is a transaction with another person, usually arranged through a marketplace or local listing. The routes differ in what you receive, how much work is involved, and what can change before the transaction is finished.

Store credit should not automatically be treated as equal to cash. Its practical value depends on whether you will use it for something you would otherwise buy. If you have no suitable next purchase in mind, a lower cash amount may be more useful than a higher nominal credit value.

First check whether EB Games can accept your game
EB Games Australia lists Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 games among the formats it currently accepts for trade. That does not mean every game in those formats qualifies: the company says it accepts selected items and reserves the right to change what it accepts. Its game requirements include an Australian rating, compatibility with Australian systems, and English-language content.
Condition and packaging can affect the assessment. EB Games says a game with scratches, a missing original case, a missing cover display insert, or an incorrect rating may still be accepted, but a refurbishment charge can change its value. Retro games need their case or box. A replacement case may help you store a loose cartridge, but the published requirements do not establish that a third-party case is accepted as a substitute for original packaging or changes the quote.
- Identify the exact title and edition rather than relying on a broad description such as “Switch game.”
- Check the cartridge or disc for damage and confirm that the original case, cover insert, and any required box are present.
- Check that the game meets the Australian-rating, Australian-system compatibility, and English-language requirements.
- If anything is missing or damaged, disclose it when you request an estimate and expect the in-store assessment to determine the final offer.
These requirements are drawn from EB Games Australia’s trade policy and trade-format information. The company can change eligible formats and conditions, so check its current trade information before making a trip.

How EB Games quotes work
EB Games says trade values quoted online or in a store are valid only for the day they are quoted and may change the following day. An online estimate assumes the game is in resalable condition; it is not a guaranteed offer. Staff finalise the value in store after assessing the item, so the amount can differ if its condition or packaging does not match the assumptions behind the estimate.
The estimate can also depend on EB World membership level. EB Games describes the online “up to” estimate as the value for EB World Level IV members. A signed-in member may see an estimate better tailored to their own level and any applicable EB World PLUS subscription. If you are using an unsigned-in or general estimate, do not assume it is your personal final offer.

There is no single published, durable EB Games trade value for Nintendo games in the sources available for this guide. EB Games directs customers to its estimate tool or a store assessment; its support team says it cannot provide trade values. Old trade sheets, forum posts, or anecdotes are not substitutes for a quote for your exact game on the day you intend to trade.
How to get a useful quote
- Record the item. Write down the exact title, edition, platform, condition, and whether the original case and inserts are present.
- Use the current estimate tool. Sign in if you have an EB World account so the estimate can reflect your membership level where applicable. Treat the result as provisional.
- Check the date. Obtain or confirm the estimate on the day you plan to trade, because EB Games says quoted values are valid only for that day.
- Take the game to a store for assessment. Staff determine the final value after inspecting the item. Do not base a decision on the online estimate alone if the condition or packaging is uncertain.
- Check the value you can actually use. Confirm how the credit will be provided in your state and whether it suits a purchase you genuinely plan to make.
EB Games says it does not match offers from online or private traders. A higher marketplace asking price therefore does not create a right to a higher EB Games quote.

A private seller can choose an asking price and offer the game through a national or local marketplace. But a listing price can be aspirational, stale, or simply unaccepted. It should not be treated as the amount you will receive. The stronger comparison is a small group of credible prices for the same game, edition, and condition, with completed-sale evidence preferred where it is available.
For each candidate listing, check that it matches your item in the ways a buyer would care about: the title and edition, cartridge or disc condition, original case and inserts, and whether the game is complete. A sealed copy, a loose cartridge, and a used copy with its original case are not equivalent examples. Do not infer a typical premium for private selling from a handful of listings; the available Australian sources do not publish a title-by-title comparison of completed private-sale prices against EB Games values.
Then calculate the amount you expect to keep, rather than comparing the advertised price directly with a trade estimate:

Expected private-sale cash = expected completed sale amount − seller-paid fees − postage and packaging − travel or other direct costs − any discount you expect to accept.
Include only costs that apply to your chosen sale route. A local handover may avoid postage but still require time and travel. A shipped sale requires packing and fulfilment; account for the actual costs and platform rules at the time you list. If the sale involves a platform, check its current fee, payment, and dispute rules rather than assuming they are unchanged.
Use a like-for-like comparison
- Make an item record. Note the precise game, edition, platform, condition, and packaging for both comparisons.
- Get the EB Games figure for that day. Use the online estimate as a starting point and, if you need a firm comparison, obtain the in-store assessment.
- Find comparable private-sale evidence. Look for the same edition and similar condition. Prefer completed-sale evidence when available; do not confuse active asking prices with achieved prices.
- Estimate your net cash. Deduct seller-paid fees, postage, packaging, travel, and any likely discount from a realistic sale amount.
- Value the trade credit for your own plans. Ask what you would actually buy with it and whether it replaces spending you intended to make anyway.
- Price the effort and uncertainty separately. Decide how much time you are willing to spend listing, answering questions, negotiating, and completing delivery or collection.
This method does not produce a universal percentage by which one route wins. It gives you an item-specific decision based on a current quote, realistic sale evidence, and your own plans.
What eBay Australia’s 2026 seller rules mean
eBay Australia’s seller information, marked “Last updated: 27 March 2026,” describes changes to its Buyer Protection fee and free-selling experience. For relevant purchases from 12 May 2026, the Buyer Protection fee applies, except for Vehicles and Classified Ads. The fee is paid by the buyer, and the fee is included in the buyer-facing price for eligible non-Pro listings. It is therefore important not to mistake the price displayed to a buyer for a fee the seller necessarily pays.
For eligible Australia-based sellers with up to AU$25,000 in eBay sales in the preceding 12 months, eBay says its free-selling experience has no transaction fee. Other fees may still apply, and eBay says shipping labels may generally need to be bought through eBay. Sellers should confirm their current status and the costs for their particular listing before setting a price.

The percentages apply to the stated portions of the item price, not as one flat percentage across the whole price. These figures describe the buyer-paid fee under the terms on eBay’s seller-information page; they do not establish what a particular game will sell for or guarantee a seller’s final proceeds. Check eBay’s current listing-specific terms when you are ready to post, because fees and eligibility can change.
Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree are other examples of private-sale venues named in Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) guidance. The information available here does not establish their current fee schedules or seller protections, so check each venue’s current terms before relying on a particular process or cost.

EB Games’ trade policy says trading for cash or towards gift cards is not permitted in Western Australia. Its support information says the way trade credit is provided depends on the state. Do not assume that a payment arrangement available in one state will be available in another; confirm the arrangement for your store before deciding that a trade quote is comparable to cash.
Age and identification requirements also vary by jurisdiction. EB Games’ current requirements page lists minimum ages of 17 in Queensland, 16 in New South Wales, and 18 in Victoria, and provides requirements for other states and territories. Check the current rule for your own jurisdiction and bring acceptable identification before visiting. A trade-in that cannot be completed because you do not meet the local requirements is not a usable offer.

For the applicable details, consult EB Games Australia’s live Trade Policy and trade-format information, its trade-value support page, and its state requirements page. The policies are subject to change, so verify the current wording rather than relying on a previous visit or an old online answer.

Private-sale responsibilities and consumer protections
The ACCC distinguishes a one-off sale between individuals from a sale by a business. Most Australian Consumer Law consumer guarantees do not apply to a one-off private sale when the seller is not running a business. However, the guarantees concerning title, undisturbed possession, and freedom from hidden debts or charges still apply. A person who sells as a business should not assume the one-off private-sale position applies to them.
Marketplaces may have their own policies and processes in addition to the legal position. The ACCC notes that online marketplaces can make consumer rights harder to exercise and describes marketplace auctions such as eBay as settings where buyers and sellers mostly deal directly. If a dispute arises, check the platform’s own process as well as the relevant ACCC guidance; platform rules are not a substitute for understanding the transaction you made.
Which route fits your situation?
Choose EB Games when the trade is eligible and the credit is useful
A trade-in is a practical fit if the game meets the current requirements, the in-store assessment is acceptable, and you expect to use the credit. It can also suit someone who wants to avoid preparing a listing and completing a separate buyer transaction. The trade value is a day-specific assessment, so make the decision using the quote you receive rather than a past offer or an online estimate treated as guaranteed.

A private sale is worth evaluating when there is credible evidence that buyers are paying an amount that leaves you with a worthwhile net return after costs. It is not enough that an active listing asks for more than the EB Games estimate. You must be prepared for the time and uncertainty involved in finding a buyer and completing the sale.
Pause if the comparison is not like for like
If one price is for a complete copy and the other is for a loose or damaged game, the comparison is not meaningful. The same is true if you compare an EB Games estimate for one membership level or date with a private listing for a different edition. Resolve the item and condition differences first; otherwise, the apparent gap may not reflect the choice you are actually making.
A quick decision checklist
- Do you know the exact game, edition, condition, and packaging you are comparing?
- Have you checked that the format and game meet EB Games’ current requirements?
- Is the EB Games amount a current, same-day figure, and has the item been assessed in store if you need a final value?
- Can you use the credit for a purchase you would otherwise make, and is the payment arrangement available in your state?
- Are your private-sale comparisons for the same game and condition, with credible evidence rather than asking prices alone?
- Have you allowed for the costs, fulfilment, time, and platform rules relevant to your chosen private-sale route?
- Do you meet your state’s current age and identification requirements if trading at EB Games?
