An offer of quick online work that promises $2,000 can be a warning sign, especially if it arrives unexpectedly and asks you to deposit money or hand over sensitive information before a real interview and hire. The headline does not identify the person, offer, platform, incident date, or information involved, so it cannot establish exactly what happened. Two documented U.S. scam patterns are relevant: task scams that display fake earnings and fake recruiters who seek personal or financial data.
How task scams turn easy work into a demand for money
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says task scams, sometimes called gamified job scams, may begin with an unexpected text or WhatsApp message offering online work such as “product boosting” or “app optimization.” A person completes repetitive tasks in an app or website and sees a balance grow as supposed commissions. That displayed balance is fictitious, not proof of wages earned.
Some scammers pay a small amount at first to build trust. Later, they may say you need to deposit your own money—often cryptocurrency—to unlock more tasks or withdraw the balance. Paying does not release the supposed earnings; it can cost you real money. The FTC’s rule of thumb is: “Never pay anyone to get paid.” FTC guidance on task scams explains the pattern.
In a December 2024 spotlight, the FTC described unsolicited messages with little job detail, task jargon, apps that make fake earnings look real, and group chats containing fabricated success stories. Cryptocurrency was the leading payment method in reported job scams during the first half of 2024, according to that spotlight. These are warning patterns, not confirmation that every unexpected job message is fraudulent.

How fake recruiters try to get private information
A separate pattern involves someone impersonating a recognizable employer and offering a remote job by email or text, sometimes from a personal account. The FTC warns that a request for your Social Security number, driver’s-license number, or bank-account information before you have been interviewed and hired is a red flag. A legitimate-looking logo or job title does not verify the sender.
Check the vacancy and recruiter through contact details you find independently on the employer’s official website—not through a phone number, link, or email address supplied in the suspicious message. The FTC’s job-scam guidance recommends verifying the company and its hiring process before sharing sensitive information.

Use these checks together; they are practical safeguards, not a formal scoring system.
- Confirm the employer and vacancy. Find the company’s official site yourself and check whether the role appears there. Contact the employer using independently sourced details.
- Look for a real hiring process. The offer should describe specific duties, a plausible pay arrangement, and interviews or other credible hiring steps—not just a promise of quick money.
- Refuse upfront fees and deposits. Do not pay to get a job, unlock tasks, or withdraw supposed commissions. A displayed task-app balance is not evidence that money is available to withdraw.
- Do not accept a check scheme. Be wary of a recruiter who sends a check and asks you to return part of the money or buy gift cards. A bank making funds temporarily available does not prove a check is genuine.
- Search and get a second opinion. Search the company or recruiter’s name with terms such as “scam,” “review,” or “complaint,” and discuss the offer with someone you trust before acting.
The FTC reported that losses to job scams increased more than threefold from 2020 to 2023 and exceeded $220 million in the first half of 2024. It also received about 20,000 task-scam reports in the first half of 2024, compared with about 5,000 in all of 2023. These are reported losses and reports, not a count of everyone harmed; the FTC says fraud is underreported.

The FTC estimated that task scams made up 38.8% of sampled job-scam reports in the first half of 2024, compared with 5.6% in 2023. Those percentages came from hand-coding a random sample of 500 job-scam reports per year and extrapolating; reports with no narrative were excluded. They describe the FTC’s estimate from that sample, not the share of all real-world job scams.

- Stop contact and further transfers. Do not send more money, disclose additional information, or follow instructions to move funds. A displayed balance or promise of reimbursement is not a reason to pay again.
- Save the evidence. Keep messages, emails, job advertisements, payment receipts, and records of bank transfers or cryptocurrency transactions. Do not delete the conversation before recording relevant details.
- Contact the real employer, if impersonated. Use contact information from the company’s official site to alert it and verify whether the recruiter or vacancy is genuine.
- Report the suspected fraud. Submit a report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Reporting does not guarantee that a payment will be reversed or that losses will be recovered.
- Use the identity-theft recovery resource if identifying details may be misused. IdentityTheft.gov provides official recovery guidance. The next steps depend on what was exposed—for example, a Social Security number, bank credentials, or identity documents—so there is no single response that fits every disclosure.
This guidance is based on U.S. FTC resources. If you are outside the United States, contact your country’s consumer-protection or fraud-reporting authority and follow its identity-theft advice.
