Its Windows documentation lists hard drives, SSDs, USB drives, memory cards, cameras, RAID and NAS devices, along with file systems including FAT variants, exFAT, NTFS, NTFS5, EXT2/3/4, HFS+ and ReFS. The exact support depends on the edition, operating system and device configuration, so verify the current requirements before relying on it.
The most important safety rule is to stop using the affected storage and save any recovered files to a different healthy drive. Writing new data to the source can overwrite the sectors and file-system information that recovery needs.

What EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard does
EaseUS presents Data Recovery Wizard as a tool for locating files that are no longer visible through normal file browsing and copying them to another storage device. A scan examines the selected volume or device, identifies file-system records and, when those records are unavailable, searches sectors for recognizable file signatures. You then review the results and choose which files to export.

EaseUS describes the product for several loss situations:
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Accidentally deleted files, including files removed from a recycle bin or trash location.
- Files on a formatted partition or drive.
- Lost or deleted partitions.
- Storage affected by a system failure or an operating system that will not start.
- Files on media whose directory information is damaged and must be reconstructed from sectors.
These are vendor-described use cases, not independent measurements of recovery success. A file appearing in a scan or preview does not guarantee that the complete, usable file can be recovered.
How a scan generally works
- Select the source. Choose the logical drive, partition, removable device or other supported source that contained the missing data.
- Run the scan. The software reads the source and builds a list of detected files. A deeper or signature-based pass may take substantially longer than a quick directory scan.
- Inspect results. Filter by path, file type or name where those details are available, and use the preview function to check whether a file appears intact.
- Recover to another device. Export selected files to a separate healthy drive rather than back to the source being examined.
Directory-based results may retain original names and folders. Signature-based results can instead show generic names, incomplete metadata or no original folder structure, which means you may need to open and sort the recovered files manually.
Devices and file systems EaseUS lists
EaseUS’s Windows support material lists the following device categories and file systems. The list is a compatibility claim from the vendor; it is not a promise that every model, enclosure, controller or damaged volume will scan successfully.
Recommended Free Tools
| Category | EaseUS-listed support | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Internal storage | Internal hard disk drives and SSDs | Windows edition, connection mode, health of the device and whether the volume is detected by the operating system |
| Removable storage | USB drives and memory cards | Card reader or USB adapter, capacity, write protection and the edition’s removable-media limits |
| Cameras | Camera storage media | Whether the card is presented directly to the computer and which file types the camera created |
| Arrays and network-attached storage | RAID and NAS are listed in the Windows manual | RAID level, controller or enclosure access, member-disk condition and whether the edition can read the resulting volume |
| File systems | FAT variants, exFAT, NTFS, NTFS5, EXT2/3/4, HFS+ and ReFS | Exact operating-system edition and whether the file system is merely supported when healthy or also readable in the damaged state |
Support can change between Windows and Mac editions. Before installing or purchasing, check the current product documentation for your operating system, the device type and the file system involved. If a drive is not visible at all, repeatedly disconnects, makes unusual mechanical sounds or reports severe hardware errors, software scanning can increase risk and may be the wrong first step.

Is EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard free?
On Windows, EaseUS says its Free and Trial versions can both scan for files and preview detected results. Their saving permissions differ:
| Edition | Scan | Preview | Save recovered files | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Free | Yes | Yes | Up to 2 GB, according to EaseUS’s activation guidance | Testing whether the needed files are detected and recovering a small amount of data |
| Windows Trial | Yes | Yes | No | Checking scan results before deciding whether a saving-capable edition is needed |
| Mac Free | Check the current Mac edition | Check the current Mac edition | EaseUS specifically states that free recovery from SD cards is not supported | Confirming what the downloaded Mac build permits before counting on it for an SD card |
The 2 GB Windows allowance is a limit on files saved by the Free version, not a statement that the software can recover only 2 GB or that every file within that amount will work. Trial mode can show a file and allow a preview while still preventing export. Make sure the installer is actually the Free edition if you intend to test recovery by saving files.
EaseUS’s FAQ says previewing can help you judge whether a particular file appears intact before purchase. Treat that as a screening step: a successful preview is evidence that the software can read at least some content, not a guarantee that all selected files will recover completely.

How to recover files without overwriting them
Recovery is safest when the source is changed as little as possible. Every download, document save, software installation, temporary file or system update written to the affected volume can occupy space previously held by deleted data.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Stop routine use. Disconnect the drive from normal work, stop downloads and avoid installing the recovery application on that same drive.
- Prepare destination storage. Connect a separate healthy internal or external drive with enough free capacity for the files you expect to recover. The destination should not be the damaged or deleted volume.
- Connect the source carefully. Use a reliable USB or SATA connection where appropriate. Avoid repeatedly power-cycling a drive that is making mechanical noises or dropping offline.
- Install and run the software from a safe location. If the source is the computer’s system disk, use another working computer or a bootable recovery environment when the edition and documentation support that arrangement.
- Scan the smallest relevant source. Select the affected partition or device. Scanning an entire disk may be necessary after a lost partition, but it takes longer and can produce more results to sort.
- Preview and prioritize. Recover irreplaceable documents, photos or project files first. Use names, paths, dates and file-type filters where available, then preview representative files.
- Export to the separate drive. Choose the prepared destination and confirm that its path is not on the source. Keep the source untouched until you have verified the copies.
- Verify the recovered copies. Open documents, play videos, inspect photo sequences and compare file sizes. Keep a second backup after verification.
EaseUS warns that saving recovered files back to the source can overwrite or damage data structures and content still being recovered. If you have no separate destination drive, obtain or borrow healthy storage before starting a large recovery job; a new drive provides workspace, but it does not repair the source.
Using an image for a faulty Windows drive
For a Windows drive that is unstable but still readable, EaseUS documents an image-based workflow. Instead of repeatedly scanning the original, you create a disk image, scan that image, and save recovered files elsewhere.
- Connect a healthy destination disk with enough capacity for an image of the source and the recovered files.
- Use the imaging function documented for the Windows edition to create a sector-level image of the faulty drive.
- Wait for imaging to finish; a large or degraded disk may take significant time, and read errors can slow or interrupt the process.
- Open the image in Data Recovery Wizard and run the scan against the image rather than the original device.
- Save recovered files to a third healthy location, not to the image file or the original drive.
An image reduces additional reads from a deteriorating source and lets you repeat analysis without touching the original again. It does not promise that unreadable sectors will be recovered, and the destination must have sufficient space for the image itself.
What RAW Recovery means
When file-system directory information is badly damaged, a volume may appear as RAW or lose its normal folders. EaseUS describes RAW Recovery as a sector scan that reconstructs files by recognizable signatures rather than relying on intact directory records.

This approach can find content when ordinary file-system metadata is unavailable, but it has trade-offs:
- Original file names may be missing or replaced with generated names.
- Folder hierarchy and dates may not survive.
- Fragments of a file can be mistaken for a complete file, especially when the source was heavily used after deletion.
- Results require manual review and sorting, and previews may fail for damaged or unsupported formats.
Use the same separate-destination rule for RAW results. Do not format, initialize or run repair utilities on the source merely to make it appear normal unless you have a verified backup or professional guidance.

Network drives
EaseUS’s Windows FAQ states that Data Recovery Wizard does not work with network drives. Its suggested workaround is to connect the storage through USB or SATA. That may require removing disks from a NAS enclosure, using a compatible adapter or presenting the volume directly to the computer. RAID metadata and controller dependencies can make a direct connection unsuitable; preserve the original disk order and obtain specialist advice if the array is important.

Scan results are not a success rate
EaseUS does not establish a universal recovery percentage in the information covered here. File condition, fragmentation, overwriting, encryption, hardware health and the type of damage determine the practical outcome. A list of detected names is not the same as a verified, usable recovery.
When professional recovery is safer
EaseUS identifies RAW drives, lost partitions, RAID damage and an unbootable operating system as situations that may require specialist manual recovery. Professional assessment is particularly prudent when the device contains irreplaceable material, is physically failing or is not consistently detected.
- Stop immediately if the drive clicks, grinds, overheats, smells burnt or repeatedly disappears.
- Do not open a hard-drive enclosure outside a controlled clean-room environment.
- Do not initialize, format or rebuild a RAID when you are unsure of the original configuration.
- Tell the specialist what happened, including any scans, repairs, formatting attempts or new data written after the loss.
- Ask about the evaluation process, handling of original media and whether the assessment is non-destructive.
The available vendor material does not establish a likely outcome or a price for an individual case. A specialist is a service category, not a guaranteed solution, but it can prevent additional damage when software-only recovery is inappropriate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical decision checklist
- Is the device visible and stable, or is it physically failing?
- Which operating system and edition are you using?
- Does the source use a file system listed for that edition?
- Are the missing files deleted, on a formatted volume, in a lost partition or on a RAW device?
- Can you preview the specific files you need?
- Do you have a separate healthy destination with enough capacity?
- Would the Windows image workflow reduce repeated reads from a faulty disk?
- Does the case involve RAID, a network drive or an unbootable system?
- Would losing the remaining data be unacceptable if a scan or repair made the device worse?
For a stable device and ordinary deletion, a cautious scan followed by export to another drive is the least complicated path. For unstable hardware, complex arrays or irreplaceable data, preserve the source and seek qualified assessment before experimenting.
