Mars appears to have grown very quickly and retained a distinctive chemical record; Earth’s formation involved a different accretion history. The details are reconstructed from isotope measurements and models, not directly observed, so no single complete formation recipe is settled.
How can scientists tell how Earth and Mars formed?
Planets cannot be watched forming, so scientists piece together their early histories from clues preserved in rocks, meteorites and measurements of planetary interiors. Isotopes—forms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons—can act as fingerprints of a material’s origin and history. Comparing those signatures in Martian meteorites and terrestrial materials helps researchers test when planets grew and what kinds of material contributed to them.

These clues constrain formation models; they do not provide a complete inventory of every ingredient or prove one detailed sequence of events. In particular, a measured isotope value and an interpretation of what it implies for a planet’s building materials are related but distinct claims.
Mars appears to have grown much faster
A 2011 study by Nicolas Dauphas and Ali Pourmand used hafnium–tungsten and thorium isotope evidence to estimate that Mars reached about half its present size in 1.8 million years, with a reported uncertainty of +0.9/−1.0 million years, or less. That is an inference from isotope systematics, not a direct observation of Mars forming. The authors interpreted the rapid growth as support for the idea that Mars is a stranded planetary embryo: a body that grew early but did not continue on to become a larger planet. That result does not mean the entire formation process is known. It supports a rapid early-growth scenario, while the specific sequence of later impacts and additions remains model-dependent.
Isotope evidence points to different building materials
A 2023 Nature study measured Mars at μ30Si = −5.8 ± 3.0 parts per million. The authors interpreted the silicon-isotope evidence to mean that Mars formed before chondrite parent bodies were incorporated into the mix of planetary building material. For Earth, their model estimated that the planet’s precursors included 26 ± 9 per cent isotopically rich material from the outer Solar System. The percentage is a model estimate, not a direct census of Earth’s ingredients. Read the 2023 silicon-isotope study in Nature.

Taken together, the studies point to a contrast: Mars preserves a signature consistent with early growth from a distinct mix, while Earth’s modeled precursors include a contribution from farther out in the Solar System. They do not establish that Earth and Mars began with wholly unrelated materials, nor do they settle one exact accretion pathway.

Both planets differentiated, but their records are preserved differently
Earth and Mars are differentiated rocky planets, meaning denser material separated inward to form a core while lighter material formed the mantle and crust. NASA describes these layers for Earth and Mars; NASA also gives Mars as about half Earth’s size. Their shared layered structure does not mean their interiors evolved identically.

Earth’s active tectonics recycles crust, and convection in its mantle has mixed some early compositional differences. Mars, without Earth’s style of ongoing global crust recycling, can preserve older contrasts in its interior and crust. NASA’s InSight science overviews explain how seismic measurements were used to study Mars’s interior and structure: landing mission overview and launch science overview. That comparatively preserved record makes Mars useful for investigating how rocky planets evolved, even though its surface cannot by itself reveal every stage of its formation.
Shared water sources do not mean matching water histories
A NASA-reported study of Martian meteorites found evidence that some water in Mars’s interior came from building blocks similar to those that supplied Earth. The same work distinguished that interior water from water recorded in Martian crust and atmosphere, indicating different reservoir histories. This is evidence for some shared ingredients, not for equal total water inventories or identical paths of water loss and storage. NASA’s account of the 2013 findings discusses the meteorite evidence.

Mars’s climate changed along with its atmosphere
NASA describes Mars as having had a warmer, wetter past and having a thin atmosphere today. Ancient channels and other geological features record flowing water, but they do not establish that the whole planet was continuously warm and wet. NASA’s account notes that the sculpted channels of the southern hemisphere are ancient; they are evidence of water activity, not a complete climate history. NASA’s Mars facts summarizes the planet’s present state and past conditions.
Earth and Mars therefore differ not only in their inferred growth and ingredients but also in what their later histories left behind: Earth’s active surface and interior have recycled or blended some early evidence, while Mars’s thin atmosphere and ancient terrain preserve a different record of water and climate.
