To tell whether an early holiday deal is worthwhile, ignore the percentage-off label until you verify the exact item, its regular price, and the total checkout cost. Match the model and condition, compare trustworthy sellers and available price history, then check delivery, return, and payment terms. A big markdown alone does not prove a discount is real—or a particular offer is fake.
Use this checklist before buying
- Match the exact item. Compare the manufacturer or model number, configuration, size, color, and condition. A deal on a different version is not a like-for-like comparison. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends checking model details when shopping online: FTC online shopping guidance.
- Compare the price elsewhere. Check other reputable sellers and, if available, a reliable price-history or alert tool. Comparison sites vary: some may show or rank only sellers that pay them, so do not treat a ranking as a complete survey of the market.
- Calculate the full cost. Add shipping, handling, taxes, and any other required fees. Check whether the advertised deal depends on buying another product or bundle.
- Read the item and seller details. Look for condition notes such as “refurbished,” “vintage,” or “close-out,” and research the seller before paying. The FTC warns that brand-name goods offered at unusually low prices could be counterfeit or stolen.
- Check delivery and returns. Confirm the promised arrival date, return window, refund terms, possible restocking fees, and who pays return shipping. Sale items may have different rules.
- Save the evidence. Keep the product listing, order confirmation, receipt, and any messages about the deal. At checkout, review the scanned or final price before completing the purchase.
Red flags that deserve a closer look
An unexplained “was” price
A reference price is useful only if you can understand what it represents. Look for an explanation of the comparison—such as a prior price or another seller’s price—and verify it where possible. Scarcity claims and countdown clocks
“Only a few left” and a timer that urges you to buy immediately are reasons to pause, not proof that a deal is good or bad. In a coordinated 2026 sweep, the European Commission said 18% of the traders checked used pressure-selling techniques, including countdown timers or low-stock claims; more than half of those identified cases were misleading. Those figures describe the traders in that sweep, not all retailers or all holiday sales. European Commission, EU check reveals misleading sales practices online.

Review the basket before paying and remove anything you did not choose. The European Commission’s 2026 sweep found that 36% of traders checked attempted to add optional items to consumers’ baskets; among those, 40% did so without clearly requesting consent.

Fees that appear late
Compare the price at the final checkout step, not just the product page. The Commission found that 10% of traders checked used drip pricing—adding fees, such as shipping or service charges, late in the purchase process. The FTC likewise advises shoppers to include shipping and handling in the total cost.
A bargain that seems implausible
An unusually low price on an expensive brand-name product can signal a counterfeit or stolen item. Check the seller, product description, payment options, and return policy rather than relying on a padlock icon: HTTPS helps protect a connection, but by itself does not establish that a seller is legitimate. Be wary of sellers who insist on payment methods that are difficult to recover.

What counts as a valid discount depends on where you shop
United States: FTC guidance says businesses must apply truthfulness standards to sale-price and price-comparison claims. That is not the same as a universal rule requiring every advertised discount to use a particular 30-day reference period.

Should you buy now or wait for Black Friday?
There is no reliable way to predict the future price of an unspecified product from these checks alone. Compare the current offer with that item’s price history and competing sellers, then decide whether the full price, delivery date, and return terms work for you. If they do not, skip the pressure and keep watching; a countdown is not a reason to accept a price or terms you would otherwise reject.
