For better sound, clearer calls, or longer playback, start by checking fit, then adjust one setting at a time in your earbud maker’s app or your phone’s Bluetooth and accessibility menus. There is no universal best preset: available controls and their effects vary by earbud model, phone, and firmware.
Start with fit and the right settings menu
A secure, comfortable fit can affect both sound and noise control. On in-ear earbuds with replaceable silicone tips, try the supplied sizes and choose one that seals without pressure. Samsung notes that wearing Galaxy Buds correctly—and trying a different tip size when needed—can affect audio quality, noise control, and call experience. Next, check both the earbud maker’s app and the phone’s settings. The maker’s app may offer equalizer (EQ) presets, noise controls, fit assistance, codec information, and firmware updates. Phones may separately expose Bluetooth codec or accessibility audio options. For example, Sony’s LinkBuds Fit guide lists app functions including EQ, noise control, fit assistance, codec display, and firmware/version information; the functions available depend on the product and software. Apple likewise documents accessibility and audio options for supported Apple and Beats headphones on compatible iPhone and iPad models. Settings to try for better sound
Use EQ as a preference control
EQ changes the balance of frequencies; it cannot guarantee objectively better sound. If your app offers presets or sliders, use music you know well, keep volume moderate, and change one control at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether a change suits your taste rather than merely sounding different.

Compare noise-control modes where you listen
Active noise cancellation (ANC) reduces some surrounding sound, transparency or ambient mode lets more of it through, and an off mode disables those features where available. Compare them in the environments where you actually listen. ANC does not always improve perceived sound quality, and transparency can be the better choice when you need awareness of your surroundings.
Treat codecs as compatibility choices
A Bluetooth codec must be supported by both the earbuds and the phone. Menu names and options vary by model and operating system, so a codec setting that appears on one device may be absent on another. Check the earbud maker’s compatibility instructions before changing advanced codec settings; codec choice is not a universal sound-quality or battery fix.

Settings and habits for clearer calls
- Wear the earbuds as directed. Check that both sides are seated or positioned correctly; on tip-based models, an unsuitable seal can affect performance.
- Keep the phone close enough for a stable Bluetooth link. Distance, obstructions, and connection stability can affect a call.
- Reduce noise around you when possible. Wind and other environmental sound can interfere with what the microphone picks up.
- Check for model-specific call controls. Some earbuds offer microphone, wind, or ambient-sound options, but their names and availability vary. A toggle cannot guarantee clear pickup in every setting.

To reduce power use, lower playback volume to a comfortable level and turn off ANC or transparency when you do not need them, if your model allows it. Calls and difficult acoustic conditions can also affect power use. There is no established percentage gain for these changes: battery results depend on the earbuds, settings, phone, environment, and how they are used.

Codec choice is also model-specific. Nothing’s support guidance identifies volume, codec or bitrate, ANC, transparency, environment, and calls as factors in power use, and recommends trying AAC for the products covered by that guidance. Consider that option only if your earbuds and phone support it and the maker recommends it for your model; it is not a general rule for other devices. Nothing documents model-specific controls and platform limits in its How-to guide and discusses battery-drain factors in its battery guidance.

- Sound remains weak or uneven: Recheck placement and, for replaceable-tip in-ear models, try another supplied tip size before adjusting EQ.
- Calls still sound poor: Test with the phone nearby and less background noise. A settings change may not overcome a poor connection or difficult surroundings.
- A control or codec option is missing: The feature may not be supported by that earbud, phone, operating system, or firmware. Check the maker’s guide for your exact model.
- Performance changes unexpectedly: Check the maker’s app for a firmware update and consult the model’s instructions before changing advanced codec options or resetting the earbuds.
Settings screens and feature support change over time. Because controls differ by model and phone, use the current manufacturer instructions for your devices rather than assuming a menu path or feature is universal.
