If an earbud tip feels tight, compressed, or uncomfortable, it may be too large—but that feeling alone cannot identify the cause. Poor placement, the shape of the earbud body, skin irritation, or another ear problem can also cause discomfort. Check the fit without forcing the earbud: it should feel comfortable, stay secure, and provide an appropriate seal.
How to check whether your earbud tips are too big
Judge the fit using comfort, stability, and seal together. A tight-feeling tip may be oversized, but a tip that is too small can also fit poorly by leaving a gap or feeling insecure. The aim is not to pick the smallest tip; it is to find a size that works for your ears and your specific earbuds.

- Follow the model’s insertion instructions. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for your exact earbuds and position them as directed. Incorrect placement can feel uncomfortable, affect stability, or interfere with the seal. Apple, Samsung, and Sony each provide model-specific fit guidance.
- Notice how the earbuds feel during ordinary wear. If a tip feels compressed or uncomfortable, try another included size rather than pushing the earbud farther in. Apple says its AirPods Pro users can try a different tip size when a tip feels uncomfortable.
- Check whether the earbuds stay put and seal properly. A suitable fit should be comfortable and stable, with an appropriate seal. Consider how they feel during normal movement, not just at the moment you insert them.
- Try another size and reassess. Sony advises trying larger or smaller tips to find a comfortable, snug fit. Repeat the check after changing sizes; the result should be comfortable as well as secure.
- Assess each ear separately. The best size may differ between your left and right ears. Do not assume that a matching pair of tips is necessary if the manufacturer’s instructions allow different sizes.
What comfort, stability, and seal can tell you
Comfort and pressure
A tip that feels overly tight or compressed is a reason to test another size. It is not, by itself, proof that the tip is too big: insertion angle and the earbud body’s shape can also contribute to pressure. Do not try to solve discomfort by forcing the earbud deeper.

Stability
If the earbud feels loose or shifts during ordinary movement, the tip may be too small, the earbud may be incorrectly positioned, or another aspect of the fit may be unsuitable. Sony’s guidance is to test different tip sizes for a comfortable, snug fit.

Seal and sound
A poor seal can indicate that the tip is not fitting well, but sound alone does not tell you whether the tip is too large or too small. Apple describes a good AirPods Pro fit as comfortable with a good seal. Use a fit test only if your particular earbud model supports one, and follow that model’s current instructions.
What earbud fit tests can—and cannot—tell you
Some earbuds offer a software-based check of fit or seal; many do not. Apple describes an Ear Tip Fit Test for AirPods Pro generations 1 and 2 and an Acoustic Seal Test for generation 3 under supported software conditions. Samsung documents fit tests for certain Galaxy Buds, with availability depending on the device.

These checks are specific to supported models and software. A passing result can help assess the seal or sound performance, but it does not establish that a tip will remain comfortable during extended wear. If the fit test disagrees with how the earbuds feel, do not ignore pain or pressure; follow the manufacturer’s fitting guidance and reassess.
When to stop wearing the earbuds
Stop using the earbuds if they cause pain or skin irritation. Samsung advises discontinuing use and consulting a doctor in that situation. Earache has multiple possible causes, so do not treat tip size as a diagnosis or assume that changing tips will resolve ear pain.

Choosing another tip size or replacement
First try the sizes included with your earbuds, following the manufacturer’s fitting instructions. If none provides a comfortable, secure fit, or an included tip is damaged, a replacement set may be an option. Apple identifies replacement tips for AirPods Pro; Samsung and Sony also advise changing tip sizes on supported products.
Before buying replacements, check the exact earbud model and the tip’s compatibility. Tip shapes and connectors vary, so a tip that looks similar may not fit your earbuds. The available guidance does not establish that a particular third-party material or brand is better.
