With DeVonta Smith ruled out for Philadelphia’s October 4, 2026 game against the Los Angeles Rams, the Eagles expect rookie wide receiver Makai Lemon to take on a larger offensive role. The team also expects Dontayvion Wicks to be part of the expanded plan, but has not specified how many additional snaps, routes, or targets Lemon will receive.
What the Eagles expect against the Rams
In its October 3 report, Philadelphia said Lemon’s role is expected to grow with Smith unavailable. That is the team’s stated plan for this game, not a numerical usage projection or a guarantee of a particular target share. The report names Wicks as part of the expanded plan, too. Philadelphia Eagles: “Makai Lemon is ready to face his hometown team”.
Why Philadelphia is confident in Lemon
Progress after a hamstring injury
Lemon missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury. Head coach Nick Sirianni said the team sees contributions that do not necessarily appear in the box score: “There’s things that Makai’s doing that a stat sheet can’t show, and we’re pleased with where he’s continuing to go.”
Work when he is not targeted
Sirianni also connected Lemon’s reliability away from the ball to future opportunities: “His touches will come because he’ll be out there because he consistently does the right thing when the ball is not going to him.” Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion said Philadelphia plans to keep expanding Lemon’s involvement: “We’re excited about him. He does a lot of the little things well. That’s why he’s on the field and he’s really thriving for us in his role … he’s doing a lot of stuff well for us. We’re going to continue to lean into that and use him more and more.”

A contested third-down conversion
The Eagles pointed to Lemon’s Week 2 game against Tennessee as an example. On third-and-eight, he adjusted to a slightly-behind pass from Jalen Hurts as a defender closed, then made a 14-yard catch for a first down. It shows one successful play in his early NFL season; it does not establish how often Hurts will target him against the Rams.
Lemon’s background and draft profile
Philadelphia selected Lemon from USC with the 20th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Eagles reported that he had 1,156 receiving yards and 13 scrimmage touchdowns in his final college season. Across three seasons at USC, the team’s July training-camp preview lists 137 receptions, 2,008 receiving yards, and 14 touchdowns. Those are college totals, not NFL production.

When Philadelphia announced the pick, general manager Howie Roseman praised Lemon’s separation, hands, ability to play inside and outside, and instincts against zone coverage. NFL.com’s draft coverage listed him at 5-foot-11 and 192 pounds and highlighted his route running, slot work, and contested catches, while noting questions about how his size would translate against larger defenders and whether he could consistently separate from NFL-caliber corners. Those were pre-draft evaluations, not conclusions about his current NFL performance.

What is known—and what remains uncertain
The confirmed change is that Smith is out and Philadelphia expects Lemon’s role to increase, alongside Wicks’ involvement. The team has not provided a specific increase in snaps, routes, targets, receptions, or fantasy points. The report therefore supports an expectation of greater opportunity, but not a precise forecast of Lemon’s production against Los Angeles.
