Champions, Rivals and Squad Battles at a glance
The three modes share Ultimate Team progression but serve different purposes. Rivals is designed for repeated player-versus-player matches during the week. Champions concentrates online competition into a qualification-based Finals event. Squad Battles uses artificial-intelligence opponents and a weekly Battle Points ranking, making it the most flexible option for players who prefer PvE or cannot commit to regular online matches.
| Mode | Opponent and cadence | Main progression | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rivals | Online PvP; available throughout the week | Stages, divisions, weekly rank rewards and Champions Qualification Points | Players who want recurring competitive matches and ladder progress |
| Champions | Online PvP; qualification-based Finals event | 15 Finals matches, event-performance rewards and Champions-related rewards | Players seeking a concentrated competitive event and its exclusive reward path |
| Squad Battles | AI-controlled Ultimate Team community squads; weekly competition | Battle Points, weekly rank rewards and Champions Qualification Points | Players who prefer PvE, flexible pacing or an alternative qualification route |
That distinction comes from EA’s current mode descriptions: Champions, Rivals, Squad Battles and the FC 27 launch update. They describe game mechanics and positioning, not independent tests of difficulty, time efficiency or reward value.

How Rivals works in FC 27
The purpose of Rivals
Rivals is the always-available competitive ladder. You play online against other Ultimate Team players, then move through stages and divisions according to your results. EA describes 11 divisions in total: Divisions 10 through 1 plus Elite. Your current division and rank determine the weekly reward track, while match wins also help you progress toward Champions qualification.
Rivals suits players who want a regular PvP routine rather than a single event. There is no requirement to wait for a special Finals window to play matches, and higher divisions award Champions Qualification Points at a faster rate. However, every division contributes toward qualification; FC 27 does not require reaching Division 6.
Stages, win streaks and checkpoints
Rivals progression is stage-based. Two consecutive wins start a win streak. Further consecutive wins move you forward two stages at a time until a draw or loss ends the streak. Checkpoints prevent you from falling below certain reached stages, so one poor result does not necessarily erase all progress.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This system creates two separate incentives: protect your position by reaching checkpoints, and build consecutive wins when you want to climb faster. A draw or loss ends the two-stage advancement effect, but it does not remove the fact that you earned a result toward the normal progression system.
Weekly rewards and timing
Rivals weekly rewards depend on your division and rank. Additional wins during the weekly cycle can upgrade the reward level available to you. EA states that Rivals rewards are released on Thursdays at 06:59 UTC. Convert that time to your local timezone rather than relying on a local clock label, and verify the current reward screen in game because live-service schedules can be adjusted.
The division you occupy and the rank you reach are therefore both relevant. A player in a higher division is not simply chasing a badge: division affects the available reward tier and the rate at which Champions Qualification Points are earned. The exact contents or quantities of a current reward should be read from the active in-game listing.
Rivals and Champions qualification
Every Rivals division can generate Champions Qualification Points. Higher divisions earn them faster, but a player in Division 10, 9 or another lower division can still work toward qualification by playing Rivals. This removes the old assumption that Division 6 is a mandatory checkpoint.

How Champions works in FC 27
Qualification is no longer tied to Division 6
Champions is the concentrated online event. You first earn Champions Qualification Points through Rivals, Squad Battles or both, then use the resulting qualification to enter the current Champions event. EA’s current guide explicitly says there is no Division 6 requirement. A player who prefers PvE can therefore work toward Champions without playing Rivals matches, while a Rivals player can qualify through normal ladder sessions.
The practical step is to monitor your Champions qualification progress in Ultimate Team and choose whichever source fits your schedule. If you are short on points, more Rivals matches may increase the rate in a higher division, while Squad Battles provides an alternative route through its own competition activity. The game’s current Champions hub is the authority for your balance, eligibility and the active event.
The 15-match Finals format
Champions Finals use a 15-match format in FC 27. That is a fixed event structure cited by EA’s mode guide and launch update, not a prediction about how many matches a particular player will complete or win. The event is intended to be a concentrated test of online performance, with the result of those matches feeding the event reward outcome.
Because Finals are a defined block rather than an ongoing ladder, plan your available play time before entering. Avoid assuming that a specific pack, coin amount or player item will be available: EA presents Champions rewards as a live event selection, and the current in-game competition screen should be checked for the active contents.

Matchmaking factors
Champions matchmaking considers your location, current form, platform and cross-play settings. Location can affect the pool of available opponents, while current form reflects the results within the event. Platform and cross-play choices also influence who can be matched with you.
These factors explain why two players with similar overall squads may see different opponents. They do not establish a guaranteed difficulty level or a universal connection experience. EA’s published information describes the inputs used by matchmaking, not an independent ranking of which setting is easiest.
Champions rewards
EA lists possible Champions rewards including Ultimate Team Coins, qualification points and Champions Tokens, alongside the event’s exclusive reward path. The precise reward table can vary with the active competition and should be read in game on the date you play. Do not treat a remembered reward from an earlier event as a promise for the current one.

How Squad Battles works in FC 27
AI opponents based on community squads
Squad Battles is the PvE option. Instead of matching you with another person, it places you against AI-controlled squads based on real Ultimate Team community squads. You select a difficulty and play for Battle Points during the weekly competition.
The mode is useful when you want to practise with your squad, complete Objectives or progress Evolutions without depending on another player’s availability. EA’s FC 27 launch update specifically positions Squad Battles as a flexible way to play at your own pace while still earning weekly rewards and working toward Champions qualification.
Battle Points, difficulty and weekly rank
Your Squad Battles match score depends on whether you win or lose and on the difficulty selected. Those match results produce Battle Points, which determine your position in the weekly competition. At the end of the competition period, your rank determines the weekly reward position.
Difficulty is therefore a trade-off rather than a simple setting to leave at maximum. A higher setting can change the Battle Points outcome, but the result still depends on winning or losing. Choose a level at which you can complete matches reliably, then adjust when your results show that a different setting is practical for your squad.
Co-op rules
Squad Battles supports co-op with a friend. There is one important eligibility condition: if either co-op player has no weekly competition matches remaining, neither player earns Battle Points for that match. Check both players’ remaining competition availability before starting a co-op game if the goal is to improve the weekly rank.
What happens after the weekly competition matches
Matches played after your weekly competition matches no longer add to the weekly Battle Points score. They can still earn Coins and count toward Objectives, so they are not completely pointless, but they cannot improve that week’s Squad Battles rank through additional Battle Points.
This distinction matters when planning a session. Use remaining competition matches for rank progress; use later matches for Objectives, Evolutions or Coins rather than expecting them to raise the weekly leaderboard.

Which mode should you choose?
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Regular online competition | Rivals | You can play throughout the week, advance through stages and divisions, and earn weekly rewards. |
| A defined competitive event | Champions | After qualifying, you have a 15-match Finals format and an event-specific reward path. |
| Playing without online opponents | Squad Battles | AI-controlled community squads provide PvE matches at a selected difficulty. |
| Champions qualification without a Division 6 gate | Rivals, Squad Battles or a combination | Both modes provide Champions Qualification Points in FC 27. |
| Flexible solo progression | Squad Battles | You can play at your own pace, work on Objectives and Evolutions, and still compete for weekly rank rewards. |
These are practical choices based on the modes’ published structures, not claims that one route always produces better rewards or is easier. Your decision should consider the opponent type you want, the time you can commit, whether qualification is the goal, and your comfort with online competition.

- Decide whether you want PvP, PvE or both. Use Rivals for online ladder matches, Squad Battles for AI matches, or combine the two. Neither mode is mandatory for qualification in FC 27.
- Check your Champions Qualification Points. Use the current Champions area in Ultimate Team to see your progress and the entry status of the active event. Treat the live display as authoritative because event rules can change.
- Play the mode that matches your available time. Rivals can provide faster qualification progress in higher divisions, while Squad Battles lets you control the difficulty and pace of matches.
- Confirm the Finals format and reward listing. FC 27’s Finals format is 15 matches, but the current event screen should supply the applicable reward details.
- Review your platform and cross-play settings before Champions. They are among the factors EA says matchmaking considers, along with location and current form.
This approach avoids two common mistakes: delaying qualification because you believe Division 6 is required, and entering an event based on an old reward list that no longer matches the live competition.
How to plan a week across all three modes
For a Rivals-focused player
Use Rivals as your main weekly activity, aiming to improve stage and division position while accumulating Champions Qualification Points. Track the effect of consecutive wins, since two wins start a streak and further consecutive wins can advance two stages at a time. Before the Thursday 06:59 UTC reward release, check whether additional wins could upgrade your weekly reward and whether the time investment fits your schedule.
For a Squad Battles-focused player
Start with the weekly competition matches that count toward Battle Points. Select a difficulty that balances the match result with the points outcome you can realistically achieve. If you play co-op, confirm that both players still have competition matches available. After those matches are exhausted, continue only when Coins or Objectives justify the session, because extra games no longer improve the weekly Battle Points total.
For a Champions-focused player
Earn qualification through whichever combination of Rivals and Squad Battles suits you, then reserve enough uninterrupted time for the 15-match Finals structure. Review the active event’s reward details and matchmaking settings before starting. The event’s current form, location, platform and cross-play factors can affect the opponent pool, so do not treat a previous Finals experience as a guarantee for the next one.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“I must reach Division 6 first.”
That is not a FC 27 requirement. EA removed the Division 6 gate, and both Rivals and Squad Battles now contribute Champions Qualification Points. Continue playing in the mode that suits you instead of forcing a division target that no longer controls eligibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“Every Squad Battles match improves my weekly rank.”
Only the weekly competition matches contribute Battle Points to the weekly score. Additional matches can still award Coins and count toward Objectives, but they do not add to that week’s Battle Points total.
Best Value
- ONLINE GAME CODE – Digital download only. No disc included. Internet connection and EA account required to redeem and play.
“My co-op partner’s remaining matches do not matter.”
They do matter for Battle Points. If either co-op player has no weekly competition matches left, neither player earns Battle Points for that match. Check both accounts before launching the game.
“Rivals rewards arrive at a local fixed hour.”
EA gives the release time as Thursday at 06:59 UTC. Convert UTC correctly for your region and rely on the in-game reward screen if the schedule appears different after an update.
“A reward list from an earlier event still applies.”
Champions rewards are tied to the active competition. EA identifies possible reward categories, but the exact current contents should be checked in game rather than inferred from an older guide or video.
What the official information does—and does not—establish
EA’s published guides establish the mode rules: Rivals has 11 divisions and weekly rank rewards; Champions uses a 15-match Finals format and no Division 6 requirement; Squad Battles uses AI-controlled community squads, Battle Points and weekly ranks; and both Rivals and Squad Battles support Champions qualification.
Those guides do not provide an independent comparison of average match difficulty, the time required to earn a particular reward, connection quality by platform, or the monetary value of each reward path. Any recommendation should therefore be framed around structure and player preference, not a guaranteed return or a claim of personal testing.
Bottom line
Choose Rivals for ongoing PvP and division progression, Champions for a qualified 15-match competitive event, and Squad Battles for AI matches, flexible pacing and weekly Battle Points. In FC 27, both Rivals and Squad Battles can earn Champions Qualification Points, so Division 6 is no longer a barrier. Check the live in-game event for current rewards and eligibility before you play.
