No EA FC 27 change will improve you “instantly”, and EA hasn’t published any data showing that it does. What EA has done is move more decisions to the person holding the controller. Defending, corners, crosses, through passes and off-ball runs all depend more on your inputs than they did in FC 26. Gilliard Lopes, Principal Gameplay Designer, puts it this way: “Across every game mode, greater gameplay control is at the heart of EA SPORTS FC™ 27.” Here is what changed, which buttons matter, and how to practise each one.
Defending: stop waiting for the AI to win the ball
According to EA’s gameplay deep dive, in Competitive gameplay AI defenders now hold position and support play instead of auto-tackling a nearby dribbler. They can still pick up loose balls or react if an attacker runs straight into them. The auto-tackle change is described for Competitive gameplay specifically, so don’t assume it applies to every mode.

Two things work in your favour compared with FC 26, per EA: manual jockey speed is higher, and manually triggered stand tackles reach further. Teammate Contain also marks from slightly farther away, so pressing well means switching to a defender and doing the work yourself.

- Switch to the defender best placed between the ball and goal, not just the nearest one.
- Jockey to stay goal-side and read the dribbler’s touches.
- Commit to the stand tackle once the ball is exposed. Don’t tap it early, because the AI is no longer there to cover a mistimed tackle.
Manual defending isn’t automatically easier. EA’s stated aim is to give you more influence, and that includes more blame when it goes wrong.

Corners: you now have to attack the ball
After you set the delivery target, the camera moves toward the box and you get a brief window before the ball is struck. In it you can move, switch, trigger runs, shield, or use Avoidance, which you trigger by holding R1 / RB during the corner setup. Players in the box no longer slide into the best position on their own, so you have to time the run and make contact with the ball.
EA’s closed beta feedback update clarifies one point: FC 26 already allowed manual control in the box. What FC 27 changes is how much assistance you get when positioning that player.

Crosses: aim and power decide the outcome
Crosses are now directed into space more often instead of locking onto a player. Aim and power matter more, and clean headers need more precision. EA says that when contact is made, headers are more accurate than in FC 26. In practice, aim slightly ahead of the teammate’s run and learn how much power each delivery needs. A misjudged cross is now punished more.
Runs and passing: more manual, more precise
Curved runs and Pass & Follow

These runs bend into space, which means they take longer than a direct run. Manually triggered runs also no longer continue indefinitely. The player stops after a limited distance and returns to positional duties, so you retrigger the run when it’s in range. The AI also makes more curved runs on its own.

Through passes
Through passes now follow your directional input more strictly instead of being pulled toward open lanes. Ground and lobbed through passes obey direction, and dinked through passes and ground passes are fully manual, so aim and power are on you. Judge your progress by how often the pass lands where you meant it to, not by one good result.
Dribbling and PlayStyles
FC 27 adds off-balance dribbling. EA names Balance, Agility and Dribbling as the attributes that drive it, and it is limited to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. EA also says it is narrowing some gaps between PlayStyles and base attributes. Finesse Shot, for example, leans more on attributes, and Rapid and Quick Step boosts are reduced. Treat this as a balancing direction rather than a blanket buff or nerf, and check how your favourite players feel before assuming they’ve changed.

Where to practise
EA’s mode guide lists these tools:
- Training Centre: Basic Training, Advanced Drills, set-piece tutorials (penalties, free kicks, corners), position-specific guides, AI Challenges, and Performance Feedback on accuracy and consistency.
- Skill Games: passing, defending, goalkeeping and scenarios.
- Practice Arena: control both sides, add or remove players, configure scenarios, turn off offsides and fouls, and practise a match or free kick.
A sensible loop, which is my suggestion and not an EA-tested method: pick one mechanic, such as corner timing or through-pass aim. Repeat a drill until the Performance Feedback numbers settle, then try it in a match.

- EA’s launch page lists PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Switch and Switch 2. The Grounds, including Clubs, is limited to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2.
- PC keyboard controls were redesigned with WASD and arrow layouts. EA Help says the old Classic and Alternate layouts were removed, so check the new bindings.
- FC 27 Lite is described as free to download, with launch modes limited to Kick-Off, Learn to Play, Online Friendlies and Online Seasons. Availability varies by territory. EA Play members get a 10-hour trial whose progress carries over to the full game, with conditions applying.
The figures EA promotes (21,000+ players, 800+ clubs and national teams, 140 stadiums, 35+ leagues) describe content, not how much better you will play. No independent data shows whether these changes raise skill or win rates.

The Bottom Line
Treat FC 27 as a game that rewards deliberate inputs. Learn to switch and tackle yourself, time corner runs, aim crosses and through passes, and retrigger runs. Pick one of these, drill it in the Training Centre or Practice Arena, and expect gradual improvement.
