Buy an EA game on the store where you want the purchase, add-ons, and refund request handled: an EA app purchase cannot be transferred to Steam, and buying on Steam does not necessarily remove EA account or software requirements. Compare the exact game edition, regional price, required accounts and launchers, and refund terms before paying.
What changes when you choose the EA app or Steam?
The EA app is EA’s storefront and game-management client; Steam is a separate storefront and client. The store that processes your purchase matters: an EA app purchase does not become a Steam license, and you should not assume that a game, DLC, or other entitlement bought in one store will carry over to the other. Check the exact game’s listing and terms before buying.

EA says games purchased through the EA app are added to the EA Library, where you can install and manage them. Some games bought elsewhere, including physical copies, can also be added in supported cases. That is not the same as importing the purchase into Steam. See EA’s guide to using the EA app.

Often, an EA Account is still required: EA Help says, “You need an EA Account to play most EA games, even if you’re playing through a different platform like Steam.” EA also says a Steam account can be linked through the EA Account’s Connected Accounts settings, and that linking is needed the first time you play an EA game on Steam.

An EA Account requirement does not establish that every Steam game needs the EA app as well. The launch and software requirements can vary by title, so check the specific game’s Steam store page. EA’s download and play guidance also explains that EA app purchases cannot be transferred to Steam.
How should you compare availability and price?
There is no universal cheaper store or complete availability list that applies to every EA title. Check whether each store currently sells the exact base game, bundle, or edition you want, then compare that same edition in the same region on the day you plan to buy. Confirm what is included, whether required add-ons are sold for that store version, and the purchase terms at checkout.

EA notes that payment options can vary by location and currency in its guide to buying EA games. A price or edition shown for one region or date should not be treated as a general price comparison.

Start with the store that took payment. EA handles eligible purchases made through EA app or EA.com under its policy; it says it cannot refund a purchase made on Steam. Steam directs requests through Steam Support. The rules differ, and exceptions and local consumer protections may affect an individual case.

These are policy conditions, not guaranteed outcomes. Check the live terms for your product and location: EA’s refund policy or Steam Refunds (Valve’s page says it was last updated April 23, 2024).

- Choose the EA app if it sells the exact game and edition you want and you prefer to buy and manage it in EA’s own client. Review the available payment method and EA refund eligibility before checkout.
- Choose Steam if it sells the edition you want and you prefer Steam’s store and library flow. Be prepared to link an EA Account for most EA games, and check the listing for any EA app requirement.
- Choose based on price only after comparing the same edition and region at the same time; neither store is reliably cheaper across all games.
- Check add-ons carefully if you already own the game or plan to buy DLC. Store compatibility is title-specific, and a purchase in one store should not be assumed to unlock content in the other.
Buy from EA, Steam, or another authorized retailer. EA warns that it may be unable to help if a key or code bought from an unauthorized seller is disabled; see its guidance on digital purchases and trusted retailers.
