Color e-readers are no longer a speculative future product. Amazon, Kobo and specialist manufacturers are shipping them now, but “color” does not describe one uniform experience. The two important E Ink approaches—Kaleido 3 and Gallery 3—trade color richness, sharpness and refresh speed differently. Amazon’s 2026 Kindle Colorsoft brings color to a mainstream Kindle line, while Kobo’s Libra Colour and Clara Colour add library borrowing, highlighting and, on the Libra, optional handwriting.
What changed in color E Ink
Color E Ink is designed for readers who want covers, maps, highlighted passages, illustrations, comics or graphic novels without moving to a glowing tablet display. The screens remain reflective and paper-like, but color models generally look subtler than an LCD or OLED. Expect gentle hues rather than the saturation of a phone.

Kaleido 3: faster, widespread and relatively restrained
E Ink’s Kaleido 3 combines a conventional black-and-white E Ink layer with a color filter array. It displays 4,096 colors, reaches 300 pixels per inch for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color. E Ink says its color saturation is 30% higher than Kaleido Plus. The technology is available in 6-, 7-, 7.8-, 10.3- and 13.3-inch modules, giving manufacturers flexibility for compact readers, note-taking devices and larger document screens.

- 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗕𝗬 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 - Made with recycled and ocean-bound plastic and repairability to waterproof protection
The practical trade-off is that color graphics are less detailed and less vivid than black text. Kaleido 3 is the mainstream choice when quick interaction, crisp typography and a broad selection of readers matter more than maximum color gamut.
Gallery 3: fuller color, slower transitions
Gallery 3 puts cyan, magenta, yellow and white particles in each pixel. E Ink publishes several refresh modes: 350 milliseconds for black-and-white, 500 ms for fast color, 750–1,000 ms for standard color and 1,500 ms for best-color updates.
That architecture can produce richer full-color rendering, but the color refresh numbers are materially slower than the black-and-white figure. It is more relevant to premium eNotes and specialist readers than to people who want every page turn to feel like a conventional monochrome e-reader.

The color readers shipping now
Kindle Colorsoft
Amazon’s 2026 Kindle Colorsoft starts at $289.99 in the United States for a 16GB model. A 32GB Signature Edition is listed at $319.99. Amazon describes a redesigned reverse-printing display architecture with an oxide backplane, custom waveforms, a nitride-LED light guide, micro-deflectors and an optical coating.
The intended use is broad: color book covers, travel guides, comics and graphic novels, while retaining a paper-like front-lit reading experience rather than tablet glare. The Colorsoft is the clearest option for readers already committed to the Kindle bookstore and its existing reading workflow. Battery life, waterproofing and other configuration details should be checked on the current listing for the exact edition; the published information here does not establish independent test results.

The 6-inch Kobo Clara Colour launched at $159.99 in the United States. It also uses Kaleido 3 and supports color highlighting, Kobo’s bookstore and OverDrive library borrowing. Gallery 3 specialist devices
E Ink identifies the reMarkable Paper Pro as the first eNote using Gallery 3 in its customer showcase. E Ink’s 2022 mass-production announcement also named Bigme, BOOX, iFlyTek, iReader, PocketBook, Readmoo and AOC as customer launch partners. These products are relevant when handwriting and distraction-free notes matter as much as book reading; their individual prices, battery claims and regional availability vary by model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do color e-readers look washed out?
Compared with a phone or tablet, usually yes—but that is a consequence of reflective color E Ink rather than a defect. Kaleido 3’s color layer prioritizes readable black text and low-glare viewing, so illustrations and covers appear muted, especially in dim rooms. A front light can improve legibility, but no single brightness, uniformity or blue-light specification is established across these products.
Gallery 3 targets a fuller gamut, but its best-color mode can take up to 1,500 ms. In practice, readers should expect a choice between quicker refresh modes and more complete color transitions. Animated content, rapid scrolling and frequent zooming remain better suited to tablets.
Can they handle comics and graphic novels?
Yes, with limits. Color covers, panels and maps are a clear use case, and Amazon specifically highlights comics and graphic novels for Kindle Colorsoft. The experience depends on panel detail, page size and how often the device must zoom or redraw. A 6-inch reader is easier to carry but gives dense pages less room; a 7-inch reader provides more workspace without becoming a large-format document device. Black-and-white text remains sharper than color artwork on Kaleido 3 because the resolutions differ.
How to choose between the current options
- Choose your ecosystem first. Kindle Colorsoft fits Amazon’s bookstore; Kobo models add Kobo purchases and OverDrive borrowing.
- Decide whether you need handwriting. Libra Colour supports Kobo Stylus 2 color handwriting and highlighting; Clara Colour is focused on reading and color highlights.
- Set a size and storage target. Clara Colour is 6 inches and 16GB-class pricing is not stated for that model; Libra Colour is 7 inches with 32GB; Kindle Colorsoft is offered in 16GB and 32GB editions.
- Match your tolerance for refresh delay. Kaleido 3 is the safer mainstream choice for quick-feeling reading. Gallery 3 makes more sense when richer color and note-taking outweigh slower color updates.
- Check the exact listing before buying. Verify current price, regional availability, battery-life conditions, waterproofing, front-light behavior, included accessories and repair options for the specific edition. Those details can change and are not uniformly established by the launch information above.
Are color e-readers worth it in 2026?
They are worth considering if color adds a real reading task—illustrated nonfiction, comics, travel material, highlighted textbooks or handwritten notes. They are harder to justify for text-only novels, where a lower-cost monochrome reader still provides sharper, simpler pages. The key decision is not “color or no color,” but whether you prefer Kaleido 3’s faster, gentler color or Gallery 3’s potentially richer rendering with slower transitions, and which bookstore and library system you already use.
