Dyson V8 vs. Shark Cordless Vacuums: What to Compare Before Buying

There is no single winner between a Dyson V8 and a Shark cordless vacuum: the right comparison depends on the exact model, battery mode, floor head, weight and package contents. Dyson’s original V8 is listed for up to 40 minutes, while Shark’s Vertex Pro IZ662H is listed for up to 60 minutes when measured at the handheld unit in ECO mode. Those are manufacturer specifications, not like-for-like whole-home runtime results.

Use the original Dyson V8—not the newer V8 Cyclone—as the baseline below, and treat the Shark Vertex Pro IZ662H as one named Shark example rather than a stand-in for every Shark cordless model.

Which should you buy: Dyson V8 or a Shark cordless vacuum?

Choose by the job and the exact listing, not by brand name alone. The available specifications do not establish that one cleans better or lasts longer in a typical home: there is no controlled Dyson V8-versus-Vertex Pro head-to-head test here, and their maximum runtime figures use different stated contexts.

  • Consider the original Dyson V8 if its listed 5.58 lb weight, Motorbar cleaner head and whole-machine filtration suit your needs. Confirm the accessories in the particular bundle you would buy.
  • Consider the Shark Vertex Pro IZ662H if its removable battery and post-motor HEPA filter are useful features. Its 8.82 lb listed weight and ECO-mode handheld runtime should be evaluated against your expected setup and cleaning tasks.

For either brand, check the exact model or SKU, included tools, current price, stock, warranty and return terms on the listing before buying. Bundles and availability can change.

#1 Best Overall
Dyson V8™ Cordless Vacuum
  • Lightweight for quick, versatile cordless cleaning.
  • Up to 40 minutes of fade-free Dyson power.¹
  • Power trigger helps maximize energy efficiency, only using power where you need it.
  • Choose between two cleaning modes for the right power where you need it.
  • Motorbar cleaner head deep cleans all floor types. De-tangles wrapped long hair and pet hair as you clean.

How long does the Dyson V8 battery last compared with Shark?

Dyson lists the original V8 for up to 40 minutes. Dyson says actual runtime varies with power mode, dust level, floor type and attachments. The figure is not a promise of 40 minutes in every configuration.

Shark lists the Vertex Pro IZ662H for up to 60 minutes when measured at the handheld vacuum in ECO mode. That is a mode- and configuration-specific manufacturer figure, not a guaranteed full-stick runtime on carpet or in boost mode. The Shark Vertex IZ462H catalog information separately gives handheld-only and floor-cleaning figures and notes shorter boost runtime, another reason to check the precise model and mode.

These published maximums do not make a fair runtime contest: they are not stated under equivalent whole-vacuum conditions. Match the mode, floor type, head and configuration you expect to use; the cited specifications do not establish a typical home-cleaning time or a runtime winner.

Original Dyson V8 and V8 Cyclone: do not mix their specifications

Dyson’s newer V8 Cyclone is a separate variant, not a refresh of the original V8’s specification table. Its US product information lists up to 60 minutes of runtime, 150 Air Watts, a swappable seven-cell battery, four-hour charging and 5.74 lb weight. Dyson also states that its filtration captures 99.99% of microscopic particles as small as 0.3 microns. Confirm the local listing and SKU before relying on those specifications.

Specification Original Dyson V8 Dyson V8 Cyclone
Maximum runtime Up to 40 minutes Up to 60 minutes
Suction figure 115 Air Watts in MAX mode 150 Air Watts
Battery Six-cell lithium-ion battery Swappable seven-cell battery
Charging time Five hours Four hours
Listed weight 5.58 lb 5.74 lb

Figures are Dyson’s US product specifications accessed in 2026; the pages do not state a publication year. Runtime remains dependent on conditions, and the figures should not be transferred between variants.

How do weight and battery removal compare?

Dyson lists the original V8 at 5.58 lb. Shark lists the Vertex Pro IZ662H at 8.82 lb. These are model-specific listed weights; the product material does not establish that the figures use identical configurations, so treat them as reference points rather than a definitive handling test.

  • Dyson V11 Cordless Vacuum, Wand, Docking Station, Charger, Mini Soft Dusting Brush, Crevice Tool, Hair Screw Tool, Motorbar Cleaner Head, Lithium Ion Battery (1)
  • Versatile and cordless for whole-home deep cleaning.
  • 60% more power.¹ Up to 60 minutes of run time.²
  • Three power modes. Auto mode for everyday cleaning tasks—the optimal balance of power and run time to preserve the lifespan of your battery. Eco mode for maximum run time. Boost mode for intensive spot cleaning.
  • LCD screen shows power modes, maintenance alerts, and remaining run time to the second.

The original V8 page specifies a six-cell lithium-ion battery. The Vertex Pro IZ662H page specifies a removable battery, while the V8 Cyclone has a swappable battery. Battery language and features vary by model: do not assume every Shark or every Dyson cordless vacuum has the same arrangement. If replacing or adding a battery matters, verify compatibility with the exact SKU.

What filtration and cleaner-head details should you check?

Dyson describes whole-machine filtration for the original V8. The Vertex Pro IZ662H specifies a post-motor HEPA filter. These are the manufacturers’ descriptions; the specifications cited here do not establish equivalent testing protocols or prove that the claims are directly comparable.

The original V8 information lists a Motorbar cleaner head and attachments, but Dyson packages can differ. Shark’s supplied head and tools depend on the exact model and bundle. Before comparing value, check the listing’s box contents and confirm that the included head and handheld tools fit your floors, stairs and other cleaning needs.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Identify the exact vacuum. Record the Dyson version or Shark model number, such as original V8 versus V8 Cyclone, or Vertex Pro IZ662H versus Vertex IZ462H.
  2. Check runtime in context. Look for the stated mode, whether the vacuum is handheld or configured for floor cleaning, and any stated limits. Compare equivalent conditions rather than maximum numbers alone.
  3. Match the cleaner head and tools to your home. Review the exact package contents for your mix of hard floors, carpet, pets and stairs.
  4. Assess handling and battery needs. Compare weight on a consistent configuration basis, and confirm whether the particular model’s battery is removable or swappable if that feature matters.
  5. Verify the live offer. Check the specific listing’s price, stock, warranty and return terms; these details are not fixed by the manufacturer specification pages.

What the published specifications cannot tell you

Manufacturer product pages establish the named models’ stated specifications, not comparative cleaning performance, long-term durability, repairability, lifetime cost or battery degradation. They also do not show how long either vacuum will run in your home under your chosen mode and surfaces. Treat those questions as unresolved by the figures above rather than inferring a winner from a maximum runtime, suction number or filtration label.
