The Dyson V8 Absolute may still suit buyers who want a relatively lightweight cordless vacuum with useful floor and handheld tools, but its small bin, trigger control and long recharge are real compromises. Lauren Bradbury’s 2024 Ideal Home review reports strong pickup on rugs and carpet, including dog hair, in her home; it is an attributed home test, not an independent laboratory comparison. Whether it is worth buying now depends on the price and exact bundle available where you live.
What the Dyson V8 Absolute offers
The Dyson V8 is an older cordless stick vacuum: Ideal Home’s review says the model was released in 2016. The V8 Absolute is intended to work as both a stick vacuum and a handheld, with attachments for different surfaces and cleaning jobs. The review lists these specifications:

How it performed in a home test
Bradbury tested the V8 Absolute in her three-bedroom home for just over three weeks. She reports that it picked up dog hair from rugs and carpet, and that the cleaner-head vanes prevented hair from wrapping around the brush during her use. That is useful evidence for a pet owner, but it does not establish that hair will never tangle or that results will be identical in other homes.
She also found that the bin filled quickly in a home with a shedding dog and long hair. The handheld conversion and included mattress tool added flexibility for above-floor cleaning. Taken together, her account suggests a capable cleaner for routine jobs, with frequent emptying more likely in a hair-heavy home.

What may frustrate you
- Small bin: The listed 0.54 L capacity means more frequent emptying may be necessary, especially with pets or long hair.
- Trigger operation: The reviewer found the trigger sensitive. Unlike a simple on/off control, holding a trigger while cleaning can be tiring for some users.
- Long recharge: The listed charge time is five hours, so a depleted battery is not quickly ready for another full session.
- Limited modern features: The V8 Absolute lacks some newer conveniences. Bradbury wanted a clearer battery-life indicator and an accessory storage bag.
V8 or V8 Absolute: what is the difference?
In Ideal Home’s comparison, the V8 and V8 Absolute are essentially the same machine, with differences in color and included accessories. The Absolute’s extra tools may be worthwhile if you will use them and do not already own compatible alternatives. The review said the V8 was £70 cheaper than the Absolute when it was published on 27 September 2024; that historical price difference is not a current quote.
Do not assume every Dyson V8 accessory fits every V8 bundle or generation. Check the exact vacuum model and accessory compatibility before purchasing additional tools or replacement heads.

How it compares with newer Dyson models
The 2024 review compares the V8 Absolute with the Gen5detect and V15 Detect Absolute, citing longer runtimes for those newer machines: 70 minutes for the Gen5detect and up to 60 minutes for the V15 Detect Absolute. Those are figures reported in that dated review, not a current comparison of all regional versions or bundles.
When comparing a V8 Absolute with a newer vacuum, weigh the complete bundle and price against the features you will actually use. Relevant differences include runtime and recharge, bin capacity, weight and maneuverability, carpet and hard-floor performance, pet-hair handling, included attachments, trigger versus one-button control, filtration and any sensor or screen features. Do not compare headline prices alone if one package includes tools that the other does not.

Who should consider the V8 Absolute?
It may make sense if
- You find it at a price that is attractive for the exact bundle and condition being sold.
- You want a stick vacuum that converts to a handheld and value the included tools.
- Your cleaning routine can accommodate a smaller bin and planned charging between sessions.
- You prefer a simpler vacuum and do not need the screens or sensor features found on some newer models.
Look elsewhere if
- You want fewer interruptions to empty a bin in a home with substantial shedding or long hair.
- You dislike holding a trigger while vacuuming.
- You need a fast turnaround after the battery runs down.
- You are deciding between it and another vacuum at a similar price: compare the exact bundle, practical runtime, bin size and controls rather than relying on the V8 name alone.
Maintenance and ownership checks
Bradbury’s review describes rinsing the soft roller and allowing it to dry fully, and reports Dyson’s suggested four-week interval for that task. It also describes washing the filter and recommends mounting the dock at least 1.2 metres above the ground near a socket. Instructions can vary by model and region, so consult the manual for your exact V8 version before cleaning components or fitting the dock.

Verdict
The V8 Absolute remains a plausible choice when its price and included accessories make sense for your needs. Bradbury’s home test found strong pickup on rugs and carpet, including dog hair, but the small bin, sensitive trigger and five-hour listed charge time make it less convenient than its cleaning results alone suggest.
