Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Gen 1 HP10 review: is the three-in-one worth it?

Verdict: The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Gen 1 HP10 is a well-integrated appliance for buyers who genuinely need a heater, fan and particle purifier in one compact unit. Its remote control, automatic PM2.5/PM10 response and 350-degree oscillation are convenient, but it has no app, its “cooling” is fan airflow rather than air conditioning, and the purchase price plus recurring filter replacements are substantial. Buy it for the combination of functions and tidy setup—not because it offers independently proven room coverage or smart-home features.

Dyson’s US page listed the HP10 at $629.99 and out of stock when checked in 2026, so verify live price and availability before ordering. The figures below distinguish Dyson specifications from TechRadar’s one-publication review measurements.

What the Dyson HP10 does

The HP10 combines three jobs in one tower appliance:

  • Purification: a combined glass HEPA and activated-carbon filter.
  • Heating: adjustable warm airflow for room heating.
  • Fan airflow: ten fan speeds and up to 350 degrees of oscillation for circulation.

The fan function is not air conditioning. It moves air across you and can feel cooler, but it does not refrigerate a room or lower its temperature like an air conditioner. This distinction matters if you are shopping for summer cooling rather than personal airflow.

Dyson describes the filter as H13 HEPA plus activated carbon and claims capture of 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns on its US product page. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent comparative laboratory result. The filter also captures gases, but the machine’s automatic sensing is specified for particles only: PM2.5 and PM10.

Who should buy the HP10?

It suits households that need all three functions

The HP10 makes the most sense when floor space is limited or when you would otherwise buy separate appliances. One enclosure provides heating in cold weather, fan airflow in warmer weather and continuous particle filtration. You also avoid moving a standalone heater and purifier between rooms.

It is a poor fit if smart control or air-conditioning is essential

Dyson’s FAQ confirms that the HP10 has no app connectivity. Operation is through the supplied remote, and the LCD on the machine provides status information. Choose another model or a separate smart purifier if phone control, schedules managed from an app or integration with a smart-home platform is a requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, do not buy it expecting refrigerated cooling. The HP10 cannot replace an air conditioner.

Warranty Two-year parts and limited warranty in the cited US specification; regional terms can differ

See Dyson’s complete technical sheet for the stated electrical figures and conditions: HP10 technical specification.

The 40 W maximum and 6 W minimum figures describe electrical input for this model; they are not a clean-air-delivery rate, room-size guarantee or a measure of how quickly a room heats. Those performance questions require comparable testing that is not supplied here. Treat the numbers as useful for understanding the appliance’s stated power range, not as a promise of a particular electricity bill or temperature rise.

Filtration and what the sensors actually measure

HEPA and carbon work together

The glass HEPA element is intended to remove airborne particles, while activated carbon addresses gases and odors. Dyson’s 99.97% figure applies to particles as small as 0.3 microns under the manufacturer’s stated claim; it should not be read as a guarantee that every room will reach a particular air-quality level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filter performance in your home depends on run time, room volume, doors, windows, pollutant sources and how quickly air is mixed. Cooking, candles, smoke, dust and outdoor air entering through an open window can all change readings faster than a single tower can respond. The HP10 can be useful at a workstation or bedroom, but there is no independent room-coverage result in the cited material to use as a universal sizing rule.

Automatic mode is based on PM2.5 and PM10

The HP10’s automatic response is tied to PM2.5 and PM10 readings. The LCD can show those readings, along with temperature and remaining filter life. Dyson does not identify automatic VOC sensing for this model. A carbon filter that captures gases is not the same thing as a sensor that detects and reports VOC concentration, so the HP10 should not be marketed or understood as a VOC monitor.

Continuous monitoring is disabled by default. The manual explains that it can be enabled from the remote, allowing the machine to keep sampling air-quality information while the appliance is not actively heating or circulating at a high setting. If you want the display to continue updating while the unit appears idle, enable this feature rather than assuming it is active out of the box.

Controls, modes and day-to-day operation

Remote-controlled operation

Because there is no app, the remote is central to everyday use. It controls power, fan speed, oscillation, heating, automatic operation, night mode, the sleep timer and temperature selection when heating. Keep it where you can reach it; there is no phone fallback for a misplaced remote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The LCD is the machine’s primary feedback surface. Depending on the selected view, it can show particle readings, room temperature and filter life. That makes a quick glance possible without opening an app, but it also means you must be near the appliance to check trends or change settings.

Auto mode

Auto mode varies airflow in response to the PM2.5 and PM10 levels the machine detects. It is useful when you want the HP10 to react without manually selecting a speed, but its decisions are limited to those specified particle categories. A low reading therefore does not mean that every gas, odor or irritant has been measured and cleared.

Night mode and sleep timer

Night mode is intended for quieter, lower-disruption operation, while the timer turns the machine off after the selected period. The display remains the source of status information because the HP10 does not send data to a mobile app. If you use it in a bedroom, position it so the airflow is comfortable and the remote is accessible without getting out of bed.

Heating mode

In heating mode you can set a target temperature. The appliance then supplies warm air while continuing to function as a purifier. Remember that the maximum 40 W input figure in Dyson’s technical sheet is not a statement of heating output; it is the electrical input specification cited for the unit. Do not use that figure to compare it directly with a dedicated high-wattage space heater without checking each product’s stated heating specifications and local electrical requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Oscillation and airflow direction

Oscillation can sweep through up to 350 degrees, helping distribute airflow around a room rather than pointing in one fixed direction. Ten speed settings let you trade airflow for noise and power use. A wide sweep is useful when several people are in the room; a fixed, lower speed can be preferable when you want a gentle stream aimed at one seat.

Placement and practical setup

Leave the air inlets and loop aperture unobstructed, and avoid pushing the tower tightly against furniture or curtains. A clear path helps the purifier draw and discharge air as designed and makes dusting easier. Keep the unit on a stable, level surface, and arrange the cable so it cannot be tripped over. These simple placement choices also make the display easier to read and the remote easier to use.

Independent review observations: useful, but limited

TechRadar’s review, published August 9, 2025, provides the available independent observations cited here. In a dry-shampoo test performed from about two feet away, the reviewer reported that the HP10 reacted within seconds. That is an anecdotal, publication-specific setup—not a guaranteed response time for every pollutant, distance or room.

The same review measured approximately 30 dB at fan speed one, 41 dB at speed five and 53 dB at speed ten. Those are TechRadar’s measurements, not Dyson’s universal noise rating and not a controlled comparison with every competing purifier. In practical terms, the readings indicate a much quieter low setting and a clearly more audible maximum setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TechRadar characterized the unit as compact and convenient because it combines three functions, while also noting the absence of smart features. No independent comparative laboratory study establishing room-coverage performance was identified in the cited material, so treat the HP10’s ability to clean a particular room as something to verify against your room size, layout and local specifications rather than as a proven universal result.

Noise, airflow and comfort

The measured range gives you a realistic operating choice: low speed for background use, a middle setting when you want more circulation, and speed ten when maximum airflow matters more than quiet. The HP10’s airflow can make a person feel cooler, especially when oscillation spreads the stream, but that comfort effect should not be confused with lowering the room’s actual temperature.

Heating and fan airflow come from the same tower format. That saves space, although a separate fan and heater can offer more flexibility if you need two different locations operating at once. The HP10 is a single appliance, so using it to heat one room means you are not simultaneously purifying another room with the same unit.

Consider the noise trade-off before placing it beside a bed or desk. The 30 dB low-speed observation may be unobtrusive in many rooms, while 53 dB at the highest setting is likely to be plainly audible. Auto mode may change speed as particle levels change, so a sudden increase in sound can be the machine responding to an event such as cooking or aerosol use rather than a fault.

Filter life, replacement and cleaning

How often the filter needs changing

Dyson recommends replacing the filter every 12 months or when the machine displays a replacement notification. Its US technical specification gives a usage-based estimate of one year at 12 hours per day and six months at 24 hours per day. Heavy use, dusty conditions and continuous operation can therefore bring replacement forward.

Those intervals are planning estimates, not a promise that every filter will last exactly that long. A home with smoke, pets, renovation dust or frequent cooking may trigger the reminder sooner. Conversely, occasional low-speed use may not consume the filter at the same rate. Follow the machine’s notification and use the displayed filter-life information rather than extending the interval indefinitely.

The compatible replacement is Dyson’s 360° Glass HEPA and Activated Carbon filter. Dyson UK lists part 965432-01 as compatible with the HP10; regional listings, prices and stock can differ. Check the model number and region before purchasing from the Dyson HP10 support and filter page.

Replacement procedure

  1. Switch the HP10 off and unplug it.
  2. Remove the outer covers as shown in the user manual.
  3. Take out the used filter and install the replacement in the correct orientation.
  4. Reassemble the outer covers securely.
  5. Reset the filter-life indicator by holding the Night mode button on the remote for five seconds.

Dyson’s manual emphasizes that resetting the indicator after replacement is important: “It’s important to reset your filter life after you have replaced your filter.” Read the illustrated instructions in the HP10 user manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Routine cleaning

Unplug the unit before cleaning. Wipe dust with a damp, lint-free cloth and clear dust or blockages from the air inlets and the loop aperture. Do not treat external dusting as a substitute for replacing the filter; the filter-life reminder concerns the consumable inside the machine. Never wash the filter unless the manual for your exact replacement specifically says to do so; the documented HP10 procedure is replacement, not washing.

Price, ownership cost and warranty

Dyson’s US product page showed a price of $629.99 and an out-of-stock status at the time of the cited 2026 check. Both price and stock are volatile, so confirm the live listing before making a purchase. The price is easier to justify when it replaces three appliances and you value the compact design; it is harder to justify if you only need particle filtration or occasional fan airflow.

Budget for the replacement filter as an ongoing cost. The documented interval is usage-based, not a permanent guarantee, and the filter is a proprietary consumable listed for the HP10. A sensible ownership comparison adds the expected number of filters over your intended ownership period, then checks local filter pricing and availability. A cheaper appliance can lose some of its initial advantage if replacement filters are difficult to find, while a discounted HP10 may still be poor value if you do not need its heater.

HP10 versus a fan-only purifier

TechRadar identifies Dyson’s Purifier Cool Gen1 TP10 as a lower-cost alternative for someone who does not need integrated heating. That comparison is conditional: the TP10 leaves you responsible for obtaining a separate heater, while the HP10 includes heating in the same appliance. Before choosing either, compare the live price, filter price, room-size guidance and warranty for your region; those details change and are not fixed by the review’s historical pricing.

Question Choose the HP10 when… Consider a fan-only purifier when…
Heating You want heating built into the purifier You already have a suitable heater or do not need one
Space One three-function tower is preferable to multiple appliances Separate appliances are acceptable
Controls Remote control is sufficient You are comparing models for other control options
Cooling expectation You need circulating fan airflow You need only airflow and purification, without heat

The fan-only route can also make sense if you want one appliance dedicated to filtration while another appliance handles heating in a different room. The HP10’s advantage is fewer boxes and a consistent control system; its disadvantage is that one device cannot perform both room jobs simultaneously. Compare that flexibility with your actual floor plan rather than assuming three functions automatically equal better value.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming “cool” means air conditioning

The HP10 circulates air. It does not provide compressor-based cooling. For a room that must be cooled below ambient temperature, plan for a separate air conditioner.

Assuming carbon filtration means VOC measurement

The carbon layer can capture gases, but the specified automatic sensors cover PM2.5 and PM10. If you need quantified VOC readings, the HP10 is not documented as providing them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring filter replacement

Include the filter in the ownership budget and note your daily run time. At 24 hours per day, Dyson’s own estimate is six months rather than one year.

Expecting app control

There is no app connectivity. The remote and onboard LCD are the control and feedback interfaces.

Treating one review test as a universal performance guarantee

The dry-shampoo response and noise figures came from TechRadar’s specific test setup. They are useful reference points, not a substitute for room-specific results or a standardized comparison across purifiers.

Buying without checking regional details

Price, stock, replacement-filter listings and warranty terms vary by country. Confirm that the HP10 is sold for your electrical market and that the compatible 360° filter is available locally before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you buy the Dyson HP10?

Buy it if these priorities match

  • You want one appliance that heats, circulates air and filters particles.
  • You value automatic PM2.5/PM10 response and a 350-degree oscillating airflow.
  • You are comfortable operating the machine by remote rather than an app.
  • You accept the purchase price and recurring filter expense.
  • You can place it where air inlets and the loop remain clear and maintain it on the documented schedule.

Look elsewhere if these priorities match

  • You need true air conditioning.
  • You require app control, smart-home integration or documented VOC sensing.
  • You only need a basic purifier and can buy a less expensive dedicated model.
  • You cannot commit to replacing the filter when notified or at the usage-based interval.
  • You need separate appliances working in different rooms at the same time.

The HP10 is best understood as a convenience-focused three-in-one appliance. Its strongest argument is the integration of heating, fan airflow and particle purification in one remote-controlled tower. Its main compromises are the high and time-sensitive purchase price, ongoing filter costs, lack of app connectivity and the limited scope of its automatic sensing. Those trade-offs make the HP10 a sensible targeted purchase, not a universal recommendation for every air-quality problem.
